Edmund Posted 12 July 2009 Posted 12 July 2009 Just don't always stay in London, theres alot more to the UK than London. Especially if you want to visit a place where your uncle is your aunt : Melton
Libertine Posted 12 July 2009 Posted 12 July 2009 Just don't always stay in London, theres alot more to the UK than London. Don't go to London full stop.
BoneDog Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Above post is the most sense I have ever heard on FT. Don't go. Unless you enjoy looking at a noisy sh*thole. I suppose there might be the odd interesting bit, but all the places I've been are just filthy. It's like coming out of a backstreet club at 3 in the morning except Londons got bigger walls to look at.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Yorkshire Dales was a beautiful drive on the way to Scotland and scary when the fog rolled in driving along mountains when you can't see 2 metres past your car bonnet. York Was awesome loved it such a preety down full of history made me appreciate England for it's history. Thames river cruise was quality. Also Foxton locks was good and a few of the surronding towns and there pubs were like out of a picture by memory shearsby or something.

Bellend Sebastian Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 It depends where you've been already, and what you're into. Much as I love the Lake District, if you've been to New Zealand before, maybe it wouldn't be that impressive. York is great for history and general olde worlde charm. If you venture South West ish, like Lisa says there are loads of nice places, like Bath, Wells, Glastonbury etc. If you like the sea, Devon and Cornwall have the best coastline, IMO, but Dorset is very beautiful too. London is bloody dreadful and wonderful at the same time. Although it features many a tourist trap and can be so busy you go insane, there is loads of great architecture, free stuff like the museums, and if you go a little off the beaten track some of the best pubs I've ever been in. Bradgate Park is a must if you're spending time in Leicester
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Will i get shot for saying i enjoyed Nottingham Castle and the pub near there.
MC Prussian Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 I've only heard good things about Snowdonia (Northern Wales), the Peak District and Cornwall (parents have been to Penzance/Falmouth recently and loved it). Bournemouth/Brighton in Summer is also a must-do.
DB11 Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Yorkshire Dales was a beautiful drive on the way to Scotland and scary when the fog rolled in driving along mountains when you can't see 2 metres past your car bonnet. Did you not have fog lights?
James. Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 A lot of people may slate London but for a visitor from Australia it's an absolute must. There's probably more to see in London then the rest of the UK put together. Obviously though you'll want to spend some time elsewhere, so I'd recommend Brighton, Edinburgh, Lake District, New Forest, Snowdonia and the Scottish Highlands.
hairy Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 If you are going to go to Stonehenge, also visit Wells, Glastonbury (take a walk up the Tor, if it's a nice day, but mind the cows), and see the stone circle at Avebury. This. Magnetic stones too.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 The Lake District Cornish Coast London (The Famous Buildings, and Museums (Kids should enjoy the Natural History Museum)

Agreed i loved it such a busy and vibrant place plenty to see i remember just walking around from 9am til 9pm. Also went for a sporting day check out Highbury, Wimbeldon, Lords and Stamford Bridge as that sort of thing intrested me. So i would assume there is something for everyone in London.....including Buckingham Palace was good to see even tho i don't give two hoots about the queen
ozleicester Posted 13 July 2009 Author Posted 13 July 2009 This. Magnetic stones too. We are now only going to see "stones" on the recomendation of DB11 unless he has heard of them...or is at least happy with the google description.. WE WILL NOT BE GOING! London, Have done it before... but will still be spending 5 days there, in all honesty my dad used to say, you could spend your life in London and still miss the best bits. South west, cornwall, bath, are in. Looking at North Wales. Thanks everyone...dont stop now..am loving the suggestions
welck12 Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Don't go to London full stop. Above post is the most sense I have ever heard on FT. This. I would recomend the new forest as well, but like someone said before if you've been new zealand it might not seem as impressive.
Guest Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Will i get shot for saying i enjoyed Nottingham Castle and the pub near there. The Trip? I must admit I do like it in there, it has an 'ambience' to it. A lot of people may slate London but for a visitor from Australia it's an absolute must. There's probably more to see in London then the rest of the UK put together. Every city has areas that you really wish you hadn't stumbled across, but there is so much history and so much architecture, you can find some real gems. I love the whole area around Carnaby St, although I know the other half doesn't
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 The Trip? I must admit I do like it in there, it has an 'ambience' to it. Not sure what it was called but i think it was the oldest pub in England or one of.
hairy Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Looking at North Wales. Thanks everyone...dont stop now..am loving the suggestions Spent a lot of time in North Wales on holiday when I was a kid http://www.portmeirion-village.com/ The place they shot The Prisoner is good
Guest Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Not sure what it was called but i think it was the oldest pub in England or one of. It'll be The Trip, Olde Trip to Jerusalem as it's properly known. We really miss some character boozers in Leicester.....
hairy Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 We really miss some character boozers in Leicester..... I am available anytime for a drink, just ask.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 It'll be The Trip, Olde Trip to Jerusalem as it's properly known. We really miss some character boozers in Leicester..... Yeah thats the one nice place for a beer and meal.
