Joe. Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 £750k may seem steep, but goals are invaluable, especially to a side like us who are notorious for not scoring many. Phillips, although aging, is proven at Championship level, and that is unquestionable. In an ideal world we'll sign two strikers, but if Phillips is one of them then I wouldn't grumble at this stage. I agree that we need a more pacy forward man, but maybe Pearson feels that N'Guessan can make the switch up front for that purpose.
flanimal Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 Birmingham went up playing Phillips - with no pace. What striker did they have who provided pace? I'm not being faceitous, I just wondered how the other striker was.

flanimal Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 Cheers, didn't really follow Birmingham last season. Wolves had Blake. For me, Phillips isn't the answer.
purpleronnie Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 If indeed brum let him go, he would go to another premiership club or a top championship side. But If I'm wrong (yeah right) It would be a great signing. I also predict if he does sign it will be the best signing ever but if he doesn't we didnt want him anyway.
RowlattsFox Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 If we signed Phillips, on a respectable wage, and then managed to maybe get a highly-rated youngster with a bit of pace on loan from one of the big boys, which I'm expecting us to do once the Premiership sides get closer to the start of the season. I'd be relatively happy with that. It would just be typical of us to sign a striker who has scored goals everywhere throughout his career and then suddenly loses it when he joins us.

Similar business to Cottee for me. A man who's never really let a club down. He'd be a great influence and get on well with Pearson. Keep Dickov for the reserves too. No point getting rid for its own sake. For me Dickov could do a similar coaching role to Powell - but with the attackers. You're right that we do need some pace though - pity WBA are in for Simeon Jackson and Middlesborough are in for Lita - we'll see though i suppose.
Maybes Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 Birmingham 08/09 Phillips 24 (12) - 14 goals Jerome 25 (18) - 9 goals O'Connor 10 (6) - 6 goals Mcfadden 22 (8) - 4 goals (most likely played left wing for majority. Bent 16 (17) - 3 goals If that doesn't prove conclusive then I dont know what will.....

Bent 16 (17) - 3 goals If that doesn't prove conclusive then I dont know what will..... Three quarters of a million and god knows what wages for someone closer to fourty than thirty? And it's not exactly like he's got blistering speed, immense strength or good height. He's typically played for teams that play decent football and will create opportunities for him. Do you really think we'll give him that kind of service?

Bent, Phillips, Fryatt and Howard it's what dreams are made of .

You dont have to have blistering speed to be a good striker ala campbell, granted it does help. I wouldn't say phillips is not strong? Are we really going to give strikers many chances no matter who they are?

Don't get me wrong, I know we're not going to be signing Ronaldinho - in fact I know we really don't have a lot of money to throw around and that's kind of my point. I think he'd do a job here, just not as impressive as everyone's making out and he's hardly going to be cheap on either the wage front or the free front.
Hackneyisblue Posted 27 July 2009 Posted 27 July 2009 Some people will never be happy Rob. Have you heard anything from inside the club about this Bert or is it just all talk? And what have you heard about Lita? Cheers

MikeyT Posted 28 July 2009 Posted 28 July 2009 Couldn't see if this had been posted. Was in the Mirror yesterday: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/200...15875-21550555/
Candidcamera Posted 28 July 2009 Posted 28 July 2009 The thought of getting such a proven goalscorer is a delight. I liked the post telling us how well he did last season against the other top Birmingham scorers. Also, he has that midas touch.
BoneDog Posted 28 July 2009 Posted 28 July 2009 I hope this isn't bullshine and we do sign Phillips. He's got another year in him at least. He would of scored twenty last year if he was played more. He's lost his pace but he's got the final 3rd intelligence that will always get goals. Sign him up

DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 30 July 2009 Posted 30 July 2009 Wycombe Wanderers don't want Carl Cort. Perhaps he should come back here to solve our problems up front.
