All of you who are so adamant he shouldn't be considered can you go and tell Taggart face to face :P I dare you :D

Leicester City coach's praise for 'superb' DJ Canpbell

Back-in-favour DJ Campbell has been a "credit to himself" during his time in the Leicester City wilderness, says reserve-team boss Gerry Taggart.

Campbell's reward was a shock recall by manager Nigel Pearson for Saturday's 1-1 Championship draw at Coventry City.

It was his first involvement with the first-team squad since last November, when he played in a 2-1 win against Crewe during City's League One title-winning campaign.

Campbell then went out on loan to Blackpool and appeared to have little future at the Walkers Stadium after saying: "I don't want to go back to Leicester – anything apart from that."

On Saturday, Pearson fielded questions on Campbell's return after nearly a year in the shadows.

TIN.adverts.adWriteDC('article-detail-impact-tile', '452x118'); 1x1.GIF He said: "He is available and you want to get your best players available and he is part of the squad. It's as simple as that."

But Taggart had earlier heaped fulsome praise on the 27-year-old striker's contribution to the reserve-team set-up.

Campbell has scored seven goals in three appearances, including a double against Tranmere in the totesport.com Cup last week.

Taggart said: "He has been a credit to himself and been absolutely superb in his approach. He's running about and showing a great attitude which has filtered through to the younger lads.

"If he is working hard, then the youngsters take it on board."

Taggart says Campbell's approach has been mirrored by the other senior professionals involved with the reserves.

They include club skipper Stephen Clemence, who is continuing his return to full fitness after being ruled out for nearly 18 months with a foot injury.

Taggart said: "The senior pros have been different class and I've not had one problem. It would be easy to think if they are not getting a game in the first team then they are not going to try. But that's not happened and that has been the best thing for me."

Fans posting on the Mercury message-board and other sites appear split in the debate about Campbell.

Some are still condemning him for his comments, while others are more forgiving.

Exactly as I thought and expected. Whatever the background to all this Peason makes himself a bigger man by rising above it and seeking to do what's right for the club by playing his best available players.

I wish Campbell all the best, hope he finally gets a proper chance to do himself justice and shows everyone exactly what a dangerous player he can be.

he should have apologised for what he said about our club if he wants the fans to really back him

As we don't know why he said what he said that's making a big assumption, maybe it requires someone to apologise to him first :dunno:

If he is solely at fault then surely whatever apologies that need to be made have been made otherwise Pearson wouldn't have him back in the squad. Most people seem to trust Pearson in other matters I can't see why the same doesn't apply here.

If it's ok with Pearson it should be ok with the fans particularly as we know FA about the circumstances.

Why does it? Because they don't agree with you?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion mate, just like you have yours. I didn't like what he said and how he's acted, but if he's willing to show he's going to work hard, put some effort in and act like he wants to be here, then with decent run of pitch time and improved match fitness, I think he could a do a job.

He did it for Birmingham and he did it for Blackpool last season, so given the chance with full fitness, (Something he's never had whilst he's been here) I'd like to think he's worth a shot. As already stated, he's nowhere near the first 11 just yet.

Sums up my feelings perfectly!

Id rather be using him for the money hes getting paid too. If that makes me deluded then so be it :D

Did he say what hes supposed to have said on a TV interview or just in a paper, because if its the latter I wouldnt necessarily believe it anyway. :)

He didn't say it in a tv interview, but he definitely said it.

Everyone makes mistakes or says things at the heat of the moment which they later regret.

We dont know the whole story.

If he sorts out his issues and trains well, why should he not be picked.

Others have done far worse at our club im sure over the years.

Id rathar have a 'something to prove' DJ in our squad than a moody "dont wanna be here' DJ being paid money to do fcuk all.

I for one hopes he carves out a decent career for himself at city.

It's an absolute fooking outrage that nearly half of people have voted yes.

We are 7th in a league we weren't even in last year. What message does it send out to the players that have worked so hard to take us back from relegation to this position if we give Campbell a run?

The guy made his feelings about the club clear - I'll support him if he plays, but he should remain 5th choice until he is sold, unless he makes a full apology to his manager, his team-mates and the fans in public

I agree 100% He is not fit to wear a City shirt, after his comments about us last season. We don't need him either now or in the future. we are seventh pushing for the play-offs and this was without him!!

As far as I am concerned it is simple.

If DJ is working hard and displaying a good attitude, as we are being told is currently the case, and this is accepted by the squad as actually being the case, then he should be available for selection like any other player.

He does not need to be liked, just respected as a player who is now doing his best for the club and his team mates, but on the other hand if he is disruptive and divisive as was once the case (allegedly) then he should be be nowhere near the first team squad.

He can make amends to the fans by getting onto the pitch and giving his all, after all actions speak louder.....and all that!

Whether he is good enough to feature regularly is another question, one only worth asking when the other matters are properly dealt with.

I imagine he is probably earning twice what many of the squad get, as a hangover from the mad days of Allen - this might get on a few peoples' t*ts and make for a divisive atmosphere but of course if he looks like he wants to help the side be successful and does the business when given his chance that might be less of an irritant- having Taggart in your corner might help with that

20 minutes of football for us in almost a year and suddenly peoples opinions change. nooo football fans are not fickle...

Who's changed their minds? Seems to me those that said if he apologies and knuckles down would have him back are the same ones accepting him back. Those that said no way are still saying that. Maybe one or two exceptions but hardly a massive change.

I must admit Im sure there was a lot more of a bandwagon against him playing in previous threads but who cares. As long as he gives 100% no one can have any complaints.

OK thanks... just playing devils advocate really! Then he was bang out of order but Im happy to give him a chance still :)

fully agree, if he's getting on well with the squad and wants to mprove, we'd be cutting off our nobs to spite the wife.

I'm not saying there wasn't but to accuse them of changing their minds rather than those that had particular view making them known in the appropriate thread suggests either MPH went through every post to check or he's making a big assumption. I suspect the latter which would be ok if he'd said 'it seems like'. :P

It's a no from me.

Even before the stuff about what he said while he was on loan, he was crap. He got a bit of game time early in his Leicester career but was always offside, looked disinterested and rarely likely to score. I would still keep him out of the team at the moment for that reason.

That said, the squad has to be picked on merit and if he is performing week in, week out in the reserves then it seems pointless to leave him there on principle. If he shows he is good enough to get into our side and score goals, then by all means stick him back. But at the moment I am happy with Fryatt, Howard, Waghorn and Kermo (albeit I have not seen the Yann Man in live action).

As a fan, I am not happy about his comments in the media but he's not the first footballer to have a bit of an ego.

So assuming NP wouldn't select him if he didn't satisfy your requirements in para 3 that's actually a Yes then :dunno:

I used to adopt a policy of three strikes and you're out. First warning, last chance warning, then gone. I think I only fired about 5 or 6 people ever, but those who turned their act around and did what DJ seems to be doing were many; great feeling when that happens

If Taggart and Person think he's our man that's good enough for me.

Give him a chance. Had he scored the winner on saturday he'd be everyone's hero, I'll judge him on what he does in the games he plays, if he earned his way back into the team, he deserves some respect.

Posted

I don't really see the point in giving him a go at the moment, we are doing OK. I wouldn't rule out him having a run in the side when the fixtures pile up around Christmas though. Then, he needs to grab this chance with both hands.

No one's really scoring, Fryatt aside, thats why. If Fryatt got injured we'd be screwed. If a players showing form in training then the manager is right to give him a try.
