lcfcadam Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Former Leicester City star Steffen Freund says Nigel Pearson faces "the hardest job in football" as he battles to take the Foxes back to the Premier League. The German midfielder has backed his former club for a return to the top flight, but says they face a tough task if they are to mount a challenge against the likes of Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion. He said: "I am very happy that Leicester have made it back to the Championship and now it's looking good for them to go on further. A lot of my former colleagues also played football around the world. We recognise the Championship as the best second division of football in the world. The standard is better than any other European league outside the top flights. "To get out of it is going to be really hard work. To finish in the top two of the Championship, the boss really has the hardest job in football. "To get promoted straightaway he will need to finish above teams such as Newcastle and West Brom, just out of the Premiership themselves with strong squads. To get promoted from this league is the hardest job in football." Freund played 21 times for his country and enjoyed spells with FC Schalke 04, Dortmund, Spurs and Kaiserslautern before joining City for their fight against relegation in 2004. Freund, who has a huge affinity with the club, said: "I follow Leicester very closely – I only played for them for six months at the end of my career, but it feels like a big part of my personal football history. I always look for their results. I remember the great people there and the city and a fantastic stadium.'' Freund desperately wants City to return to top-flight football. He said: "Leicester have to be part of the Premier league. No disrespect to clubs like Hull and Stoke, but it feels like smaller clubs like that have taken Leicester's place. Leicester needs to be back up there." After a brief spell as assistant to Nigeria coach Berti Vogts, Steffen, 39, is now back in Germany working with the German FA, the DFB, as a coach to its youth teams. Link

samjohnson Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Can he magically roll back his age a couple of years and come play for us...
syston_fox Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 What a hero. Him his nose and his long throws And his willingness to shoot from anywhere and never hitting the target let alone scoring.
Fox92 Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 "Leicester have to be part of the Premier league. No disrespect to clubs like Hull and Stoke, but it feels like smaller clubs like that have taken Leicester's place. Leicester needs to be back up there." What a bleedin' quote
davieG Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Never rated him or took to him myself, not a particularly talented guy but I guess was enthusiastic or was that just for prostitutes .
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Loved the bloke when he was here, I was quite disappointed when he left. No dobt the best memory of him was the clash with Duncan Ferguson.
BlueSi13 Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 BIG city, BIG population, BIG fan base, BIG club, fook me we are BIG. Though arguably the BIGgest underachievers in English football Its the only thing that stops us being MASSIVE! Danke Herr Fruend
dandannieldanok Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 Loved him when he was here, another quality Micky Adams signing.

The Doctor Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 He was pretty rubbish from what I remember haha. i'd agree. the only thing of note he did was get strangled by Duncan
Uncle Monty Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 I liked the bloke, i was talking the other day to a german friend who supports Werder Bremen she had never heard of Leicester but had of Freund. Steffen fooking Freund!
dandannieldanok Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 He was pretty rubbish from what I remember haha. 100% effort, never-say-die attitude; just those 2 attributes made him a world beater compared to some of the dross brought in after Adams left.
Bert Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 At least when he was here, he gave everything he had and seemed like he cared for the club. He'll always obviously be remembered for the strangling incident, but I'll never forget the time when he'd been subbed off at Elland Road, and ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the players after Muzzy's wonder strike (and last ever for the club) drew us back to 2-2 after being 2-0 down.
Corky Posted 17 November 2009 Posted 17 November 2009 I liked the bloke, he genuinely wanted to be at the club so that was good enough for me.
