No positional sense, useless with the ball at his feet, an inability to tackle and less pace than Robbie Neilson.The only good thing I'll say about him is he knows how to pick special fucking agents, that's for sure. Agree, we need Bruno back ASAP. He actually reminds me of Mattock in the way he plays but people didn't moan as much about Mattock as he was Leicester born and the full backs weren't as troubled last season.

I think it's incredibly harsh on Mattock to liken him to McGivern, Mattock and Berner and most other left-backs in this division are on another planet compared to McGivern. He's so poor in my opinion that Peter Gilbert may have a new contender for his crown of most useless LCFC left-back of the 21st century.
Simi Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 I don't understand this full backs getting caught out of position. Clearly they're expected to support attacks and that means venturing up field. Now I thought one of the basic tactics of playing 442 with fullbacks pushing up was when one went up the other stayed back leaving you with 3 defenders against 2 attackers - ok maybe a simplification but the principle stands. The problem becomes critical if the attacks keep breaking down and the defence is caught out with more than the 3:2 ratio that's when the FB is seen as 'getting caught out of position' Seems to me if we learnt to keep possession and made sure that with that possession we got into the oppositions penalty area more often than not we wouldn't have FBs being continually caught out of position. That's not to say McGivern hasn't got a lot to learn but it certainly says the team as a whole has really got to improve on it's possession retention. Of course that starts with less hoofing from the back, less misplaced passes from Oakley, Wellens and Gallagher and Fryatt to be more aware of who's supporting him amongst many improvement opportunities there for the taking. It's not a case of him not recovering after he's gone forward. The main problem yesterday was the fact that he was standing ball watching when they were coming on to us. It was shocking the amount of times the same ball was slipped around him. He just stood and watched as he was taken out of the game again and by the time he recovered it was often to late.

As a full back, he just doesn't do enough and looks woefully short on quality. Time and time again he allows his opponent to get past him too easily, whether on a one-on-one situation, or via a long ball sailing over his head. Berner doesn't have pace but he knows where to position himself and is composed under pressure. McGivern inspires no confidence and lacks any sort of conviction on or off the ball. Maybe I'm being harsh on McGivern. Afterall, he's not played competitive first team football (other than with Northern Ireland), so it's obviously a steep learning curve for him. However, he just doesn't strike me as someone with much potential. He's looked best at centre-back as he does at least appear to be competent in the air. Surely he can only get better...

Would be very happy if we could send him back to his parent club! Am praying City recall him, but miracles like that don't happen! Honest to god I don't see what Pearson sees in him at all! He is very, very lucky that we aint got anyone else at the club who can play in his position otherwise, I would hope, he wouldn't get in the team.

Why do you think we send off our younger, less mature talent to average League 2 clubs? Because they're not yet at first-team level! From what I've seen, McGivern is also not at first-team level for a Championship club. At least most people aren't just calling him shit without explanation: lack of strength in a battle, undeveloped positional play, unwillingness to close down... are all fair reasons for why we might complain about a defender. Yes, give him match experience at a League 2 club and in a couple of seasons get him on loan here before he makes his big debut for Man City WHEN HE'S READY, but not now! P.S. maybe we should give this Ryan McGivern a trial: Ryan McGivern "The Irish Nightmare"... at least he'd be good in a scrap!

All he does is hoof it aimlessly up the pitch. I know Leicester usually hoof it up the pitch, but at least most of the time they actually aim for a player!

Sheehan was not only second in our Championship assists table he scored two goals, was seventh in our shooting chart, ahead of Oakley, Hayles, Laczko and was by far the club's most dangerous set piece specialist. McGivern has scored no goals, had no assists, just the one shot on target, two shots off target and is talking about playing for Manchester City in the Premiership- as they aspire to be one of the best teams in the world!
