Anyone remember this little gem;

Football should only be shown on TV after 9pm because of the bad example it sets to children, a leading head teacher has said.

Verbal abuse, cheating and violence among players are commonplace, Martin Ward, deputy leader of the Secondary Heads Association, claimed.

He said copycat behaviour by pupils made teaching "infinitely more difficult".

Mr Ward also called for heads working in difficult schools to be paid more

Loss of 'moral authority'

He told the SHA's annual conference in Brighton that broadcasters lost their "moral authority" when showing footballers' bad behaviour before the 9pm 'watershed' - after which programmes of a more violent or sexual nature, or containing swearing, are permitted.

Mr Ward said: "Violence, verbal abuse, foul language, cheating and defiance of authority occur sometimes in schools.

"They occur much more frequently outside school and, in particular, in professional football, often without the player even being cautioned."

If football is not shown only after 9pm, then "not at all" would be better, Mr Ward argued.

I really don't see what the problem is with a bit of colourful language :dunno: . It's football, what do people expect. I'm a passionate fan and emotions get the better of me, so if there's a bad decision I'm gonna call the ref a c#nt. I don't walk around in real life f-ing and blinding all day long but football is a release from the monotony of 9-5 so I'm gonna sing and swear if I want too. In an ideal world I'd like to stand all game but I do understand sometimes that's not possible. It really does my head in all this b#llocks about sitting down and no swearing. Soon it'll be no singing and no cheering. If people don't like it don't come down and go and support the tigers with the rest of the farm boy brigade.

You'll fit in well on this forum.

And something you said there particularly highlights my views on this. Football for most people who attend is still the 'release' from their other responsibilities etc. It's a place to go without/with less responsibility, where you can go and enjoy yourself and let off some steam. If that's via swearing, then so be it.

Those complaining don't really have a leg to stand on. There are areas of the ground that are targeted at families, or those who just want to sit and watch the game, so if they have a problem with abusive language they should realise this and relocate to those areas. If they insist on staying in their seat, they should accept the situational factors of that area - language of that nature may be heard, those around them that want to stand up etc and be considerate of those people.

I can sympathise with those in the west stand, who maybe just want to sit and watch the game. Fair enough, that's to be expected in that area, and should one individual stand in that area I'd deem that as inconsiderate. All it would be doing is affecting the view of the pitch for others. The individual would have to consider the situational factors of that area, just as someone complaining about language/standing in the kop or L1 should realise that this is what the majority of those in the area want out of their experience, and should either put up with it or move to an area they would be happier with.

To be fair though some people take swearing to the next level, continuos swearing about unneccesary things becomes annoying after a while. Someone near me shouts/swears at the linesman when every decision goes against us, whether its correct or not and you do feel like telling him to shut the fook up.

I swear as much as the average person does at a football match but some people do need to be told to cool it sometimes because it ruins my enjoyment of the game if someones annoying me.,

I hardly even notice the swearing. In fact I noticed the guy sitting behind me at the Sheff Utd game constantly saying chuffing hell more then I noticed anyone swearing. Had me and my mates in stitches. Chuffing hell :crylaugh:

People are right though, swearing is part of football and life. When you are wound up and tense you are likely to swear, I know I do. And theres an area of the ground aimed at people with children or who don't want to hear swearing called the family stand, and I know from the one time I've sat in there the stewards are strict if they hear any swearing and also you can't really make out any swearing from the rest if the ground.

So to those complaining either go sit in the family stand or shut the fook up and live with it.

I'm sure I heard someone compare N'Guessan with Drogba :crylaugh: :crylaugh: :crylaugh:

It's like comparing Wellens with Messi because he uses the ball well and he's a similar build :crylaugh: :crylaugh: :crylaugh:

Agreed, it's part and parcel of the game....majority of it is banter and some of it is unsulting but with a sporting edge to it!!!

I take my young one to city and we don't sit in the family stand, and yes people do swear around us, but my kid is bright enough to know that this type of behaviour is for only matches and nothing else!!

As a responsible adult, I am appauled at this comment. Your children should NOT be subjected to this. Take them to the family stand. Children are children, and however bright, they cannot think like adults. When I speak of adults, I do not refer to age, but to mentality.

Unfortunately, this site produces comments from the pig ignorant, who see nothing wrong in foul mouthed language in public.

Has anyone got a link where you can listen back? Cant seem to find it on the beeb page.

Haha, so you think its any better in the family stand? lol:rolleyes:

Like I said he probably hears worse at Primary school, sad but true. Its down to the parents to bring them up to behave properly.

Oh fook off. You're clearly a WUM, why bother posting if you're so transparent? If you're not a WUM, you're just a bit of a willy puller.

I was 'subjected' to swearing at Filbo in my formative years and guess what, it actually TAUGHT me stuff about life and what's acceptable and what's not. I learned that for 90 minutes, you can scream, eff and blind at the oppo and then at the final whistle and returning back to 'real life', you don't swear like a trooper and you become a 'normal' person again. I've done fine in life and maybe its because of football? How else would I get a release from the tedious nature of the day to day grind?

Right, that's my self-indulgent rant over, but hopefully it hits home with some of you?

Lovin this thread! And I never knew you could get the moan-in on iPlayer, buzzin about that cos I always forget to listen. Sounds like quite a laugh.

I'm sure football has been full of foul mouthed bastards for many a year so don't think it's much different nowadays. I can't imagine those men who used to fight on the terraces and all that glamour in the 70's and 80's would of been saying 'take this backhand to the cheek you southern scallywag' to eachother.

When I'm at football though I do try and cut down on shouting 'f,**k', 'c *nt' and those words 'cos there are kids around. I tend to stick to 't,wat' and try to use amusing language instead of the worse swear words! You can't beat being at football and hearing someone shout out a comedy line when all is quiet :D

After reading this thread I might start using old Victorian English in a posh accent when I yell an insult, could be quite entertaining.

The key here is how the kid reacts when he hears it (half the time my one ain't listening anyway). If he does cotton on, he gives me a look as if "they're saying rude words!" which is good.

If however your kid starts joining in with the swearing, with no problems about it at all, phone social services and hand the child to them!

Oh I forgot to add - F**K you!

Don't have a problem with swearing, to be honest. There's a chap near me who says 'fvck' in some form every time he says something, and there used to be a woman in front who wouldn't be bothered at all until he said cvnt, at which point she would turn around and tell him to mind his language. All of a sudden it became extremely offensive just because he said cvnt? Don't know why cvnt is supposed to be worse than fvck.

IF we dont beat Scunni by atleast 5 goals the moan in on Monday could be mammoth!!!!

The geezer next to me at Newcastle stank like a tramp's colostomy bag

I thought the Birch sat near the Directors

I think if you are that concerned with your child hearing naughty words then they should go nowhere near any pitch when a match is on. From U8's up to top level. Choruses of the Referee's a wan#er and your sh!t Ha! have been common place for years and pale into insignificance compared to the torrent of abuse often heard on a Sunday morning in the park by the kids and parents.

DT, for one, we shouldn't desensitize our children, nor should we applaud bad behaviour. But children need to know what's right and what's wrong and how will they know that without seeing the wrong. Society is full of 'bads', everywhere you go there's stuff that 'kids should not be subjected to', so what should we do, wrap our kids in cotton wool. Or teach our kids that this type of behaviour is not acceptable, BUT, we should also teach our kids that the ill's of society shouldn't stop us living our lives, infact we should go one step further as to set an example!!
