OriginalRobboFOX Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 In recent months I've seen about 7 new tesco stores open in Leicester in close proximity. Today I see they are fitting The Quay out to be a new store, this comes after recently opening stores on Hinckley Road, London Road, and Granby Street. When will they stop?? Can they be stopped?? Surely we don't need them all? They'll soon have a monopoly in Leicester in terms of convenience stores and local shops will soon be driven out. Is this right? Do people care??
Ford Super Sunday Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 I like Tesco. Honestly, when my parents shop at ASDA, it ends up being £20 more than Tesco, and they always buy the same stuff every week. Great shop!
Finnegan Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 I'm probably being a bit of a wanky, pretentious nob when I do but I do like to support my local corner shop as much as possible. But I do enjoy a bit of Tesco, to be honest. Me and my flatmate do most of our shopping at B-Leys at about two in the morning .

You always see some filthy old drunk who smells so strongly of urine your eyes start to sting.
lou Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 We have a Tesco round the corner from us now and I love it, not as cheap as the big stores but still a lot cheaper than the local shop and open 6am til 11pm every day its ideal if you run out of something. Only drawback is the huge delivery lorries we have coming down our street at all hours and several cars (including mine) have been damaged down the side since it opened. Cant prove it (apart from 1 I witnessed) but were all pretty sure its the lorries that are causing it. As for using the local shops I heartily agree and would happily do so were it not for the fact the new people that have taken ours replacing the lovely family that ran it before are rude, surly, have no manners just take the money and give the change without a word and constantly "check out" my Daughters who now feel too uncomfortable to go in there. If the old people were still there Id happily pay a bit more to support it. I do still use the local hardware store and chemist etc when I can Looking at some of the clientele in Tesco at 2am makes you feel so much better about your own life too. You always see some filthy old drunk who smells so strongly of urine your eyes start to sting. Thats not just at 2am thats all the time!!
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 11 February 2010 Author Posted 11 February 2010 All valid points and I too use the Tesco garage on Fosse Road and the big one at B. Leys. But.... is it really neccessary to have a Tesco's at the Quay, Hinckley Road and Fosse Road (all within walking distance of each other)???

Simi Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Syston Somerfield is going to be a Tesco as well. We're also getting a Greggs and an Italian restaurant. Syston - Going places.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Tescos are always in the poorer parts of town - Beaumont Leys, Hamilton, South Wigston in Leics for the main ones (no offence to anyone who lives in these places ) and isn't all that cheap. Despite earlier comments I know that S Wigston Tesco isn't as cheap as Oadby Asda, especially on the own brands. The thing is Tesco put their stores in places where people won't travel too far for their shop. South Wigston Tesco is always full, but not the car park, cos people walk from the estates. They're out to keep the poor, poor. Well, you know, every little helps. Another thing that annoys me about Tesco is when they mark stuff down, they don't mark it down by much. At Asda you can get stuff at silly prices in the reduced section (though it does get to be a little bit of a scrum some times )
Dr The Singh Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Tesco has over £1billion worth of undeveloped property in the UK, held back for development by the 'monopolies commision'!! Tesco, will kill every industry one day!!

Bellend Sebastian Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 I just took advantage of the £2 meal deal. I feel dirty

Trav Le Bleu Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Oh dear..... Can of worms. Hey, I was dragged up, erm I mean brought up, in Braunstone Frith!
Samilktray Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 New 1 in Thurmaston too, opens April I think. Asda has the upperhand where it comes to fittys shopping there, me and my mates often fuck off down Asda for a good old perv and a sandwich.

Tesco, will kill every industry one day!! How prophetic your words may be in time. They seem to devour all in front of them. Like Finnegan I try to support smaller shops. It'll probably prove a waste of effort in the end but money saved isn't everything. One look at all the empty shops, the closed or closing pubs and the increasing clutch of charity shops in every town centre only emphasises the effect of the multi-national grab-alls.

So sad!!!
Katy Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Syston Somerfield is going to be a Tesco as well. We're also getting a Greggs and an Italian restaurant. Syston - Going places. Is it? I used to work on the Deli there. I remember when it was Kwik save! It's weird, I know this thread is based on Tescos in Leicester but in Grantham there's one small one on the outskirts and that's it. We have Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Farmfoods and Sainsbury's but no Tescos. Explain that haha!
Head Honcho Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 Tesco has over £1billion worth of undeveloped property in the UK, held back for development by the 'monopolies commision'!! Tesco, will kill every industry one day!! Most of the sites are owned to prevent rival stores building on them or so I'm led to believe. Monopoly rules prevent Tesco from building on them so they're just sitting on the land.

Samilktray Posted 11 February 2010 Posted 11 February 2010 There's one on Colby Drive now isn't there? Humberstone Lane its on, knew the people who owned the house where theyve built it, Tesco paid them a very handsome figure for the land.

On the bend, used to a store called PJ's. It's just outside Thurmaston really, in the kind of no mans land between the top of Colby Drive and the Industrial Estate.
