Waghorn-Deal looks unlikely

If sunderland offer him a contract and he rejects it and we offer him a contract and he accepts it, we will owe them money as he is under the age of 23!

Exactly, Sunderland hold Waggy's license!

Perhaps LCFC could put all the money they make of ST Direct Debit Admin Charges towards his transfer fee.

Everyone on the Sunderland board seems to think that Keane gave him a 4 year contract before he left, and that things like WIkipedia are wrong.

So I wouldn't get your hopes up that we could get him on a tribunal.

Waghorn's contract runs out this summer doesn't it.

If he chooses not to re-knew it, we can snap him up on a free. I think so anyway

If it really is up in the summer (which I'm not convinced it is at all), if Sunderland offer him a contract we'd have to pay some kind of compensation should he decide to take up our offer instead because he is under a certain age. Think that's how it works.

If a player is under 23 and his current club make him a contract offer of equal or greater value, then if he rejects that and moves elsewhere then the club he moves to has to pay compensation.

IF we were to get promoted AND NP wanted to sign him AND we had the money, then I wouldn't take any notice of that article :giggle:

But seriously, if we got up and were invested in (i.e. not a Burnley promotion) I think there is a good chance he'd come where he's likely first choice, at a club he's had a fantastic season at and where the fans love him. Or try and get ahead of Kenwyn Jones and Darren Bent....

I can understand he is "happy to fight for a place" at Sunderland, but does that mean he wouldn't leave given the right opportunity either?

Just had a quick trawl through the Sunderland website, and despite what the posters on their boards are saying, wikipedia seems to have it right in saying he signed a 2 1/2 year deal.

Waghorn signs pro deal

Roy Keane is delighted to tie young striker Martyn Waghorn on his first pro contract.

By Martin Walker

Roy Keane is delighted to tie young striker Martyn Waghorn on his first pro contract.

The 18-year-old, from South Shields, has made four first-team appearances since getting his debut against Manchester United on Boxing Day.

He returned to under-18 duty to help fire the Black Cats' youngsters into the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals.

And Keane has rewarded the youngster with a two-and-a-half-year deal.

"We have to reward the players when they do well," said the Sunderland boss.

"Martyn has been back training with us this week after going back to the youth team for the cup game.

"That can be a test of character in itself, but his attitude has been spot on.

"He seems a good kid from a decent family and the fact he's signed a new contract is great for us and for him.

"It was a good deal for him. I spoke with his parents and they seem happy with it.

"You have got to look after people, and Martyn's not the only one to have signed a deal.

"Whether it's a first-team player or one of the kids, you have to be fair to them and look after them."

Sunderland have also awarded professional deals to Jordan Henderson, Nathan Luscombe and Jordan Cook, some of the stars of the club's FA Youth Cup run.

Keane said: "We're always monitoring the young lads. They deserve the praise when they do well, but we don't want any young players getting carried away.

"I'm delighted for the lads that they're in the quarter-finals and they'll feel they can win it now. Why not?

"Waggy scored a couple of cracking goals in the last round against Liverpool and credit to Gen McNamee and Kevin Ball because they've got a good side there working hard for each other.

"Waggy's obviously had his chances in the first team this season and we took Jordan Henderson and and Jack Colback with us when we went to Liverpool three weeks ago.

"I've told the young lads that they will get their chances if their attitude is right."

Article dates from 23rd Feb 2008.

Looks like the decision is completely down to the Wagmeister himself now.

My source wasn't wikipedia, it was the Sunderland OS. Now it's possible theirs is as poor as ours, but even so, there is no mention of any new contract being signed by Waggy. Why would they keep it quiet if it's true?

People don't read your links or mine for some reason! We've both done this to death!

"At the start of the season the fans didn't know too much about me, but I must have impressed them!", he laughed.

"The Leicester fans are great supporters - they have cheered us on and as the cliche goes they really have been the 12th man in the last few weeks.

"They have been brilliant towards me and have backed me all the way."

brings a tear to my eye

Hugely disappointed with the news but at least he's honest, although it's not the news I wanted to hear he's actually gone up in even more in my estimations, A decent, hard-working, honest footballer, not many of those about.

I know he still has 2 more games + playoff games (Hopefully) but good luck to the lad, wish him all the best for the future and hope he continues to fulfil the potential he is showing.

Totally agree with this

Fvck.

Hopefully he'll get back Bruce will say, "look Waggy, m'boy, I can't deprive the Foxes of your supreme talent so we are going to send you back there next season" :fc:

If you think about it, he was saying exactly the right things to say. The words that Steve Bruce & the Sunderland supporters would want to hear him say.

He could hardly say what the idiot DJ said & come out & say that he didn't want to go back to SAFC, could he? He's got a bit more between his ears than DJ.

IMO it's all down to MM getting his cheque book out to keep Waggy at City.

He probably needs to get Spearing & Vaughan signed up as well.

i'd be inclined to agree, but he's from south shields. obviously he'd rather do well at sunderland than leicester. if he wasn't a native he'd probably stay here.

factoid:

ridley scott is also from south shields

Great say you want to play at Sunderland next season now just when we are going into the play offs, Great timing.

Agreed, his attitude lately has been appalling and we should send him to Blackpool.

To be fair the kid has said nothing the article is a non-event.

He's not going to stuff a chance of a contract at his boyhood club and do a DJ by saying he does not want to return.

All he's said is that he'd be happy to play there.

It's not really news.
