England v USA - ITV - 7.30 - Match Thread

Godknows what USA were then if we were very very poor. We created plenty of chances but we're practically playing with one striker, and even then we're not playing him in the way he is so dominant for his club. I'd rather have performances like this at the start than later on.

Thought we deserved to win (narrowly). Created enough decent opportunities, despite some odd decisions and one horrendous, freakish mistake.

What the fook Shaun Wright-Phillips was doing on the left wing with Joe Cole in the squad is utterly beyond me.

Heskey was world-class. Best centre-forward performance of the tournament so far.

From the top...

Green looked jittery throughout, sure the goal was one in a hundred, but so was the save in the second half. Does not, and never has inspired confidence.

Back 4 was all over the place, Cole played deep to cover the lack of pace in the center so without getting forward he looked ordinary. King did not look fit which is a real worry. Terry was comfortably our best defender which is even more worrying. Distribution was appalling too, gave the ball away at every opportunity.

Midfield was a joke, Lampard and Gerrard were awful, as always. Passing was useless throughout from both of them, apart from Gerrard's goal there was no creativity, just balls lumped forward. Milner was also either unfit or so nervous that he should not have started. Lennon, as ever, blew hot and cold, nothing like enough good crosses from the opportunities he did have, though to be frank he did not get enough ball.

Heskey started magnificently but this only encouraged more and more long ball and the service to him deteriorated rapidly and he faded, missing the excellent chance on 51 minutes was the last straw. Rooney was mostly absent, one decent shot and that was it.

Back to the drawing board Don Fabio!

The only 'shocking' thing about tonight was Rob Greens howler. The guy needs to follow Carson onto the scrapheap of poor England keepers, chance for James or Hart now.

Didn't think it was a terrible performance by any stretch of the imagination, U.S.A are no mugs.

To borrow a cliche, its a marathon, not a sprint, and we will improve. Peaking early is not necessarily a good thing. We'll win the remaining two group games and go into the knockout stages full of confidence.

We have the players and the manager to do big things in this tournament, anyone with any iota of football nous would have known that tonight was never gonna be a walkover.

Lampard what waste of space he is at international level, how many times did he give the ball away?

Gerrard wasn't much better in my view. His goal glossed over another mediocre performance, though one we've got used to when he wears the three lions on his shirt.

I bet Theo Walcotts sitting at home thinking 'How on earth did he get in infront of me.'

Why Joe Cole wasn't brought on instead is illogical. Wright-Phillips is nothing but poor touches and blind alley runs.

Lampard had a crap game... like he does at EVERY major tournament he's played in.

Rooney was no-where to be seen. Spent way too much time hanging around in the centre circle instead of playing up front.

Heskey played a blinder, shame he tired out.

The rest of them were average.

Agreed with the bold bits. I was calling for Joe Cole to start, and he should've been brought on for Milner. SWP is technically one of the worst international footballers I've seen - his control and touch is laughable and to play him left midfield was madness. If I was Adam Johnson I'd be pretty pissed to see a fellow Man City teammate who's barely played last season ahead of me for England.

Rooney needs to stay up front rather than running around everywhere but up front. Too many times he went out wide or too short and didn't get into any dangerous positions to score. Heskey was immenses but as usual, showed no composure when it mattered.

Typical England.

Typical.

Not enjoyable to watch. Glad i weren't watching on HD though and miss our class goal :giggle:

Rooney had a crap match, surprised no one mentioned it.

The bottom line is that England are a distinctly average team. Everything has to go right for us to win. I refuse to get up / down about any of this because we've been here before so, so many times and it always ends in years. And that's the way it will end again. Roll on August so we can get back down the City.

I thought the performance was piss poor. Sure one or too good touches here and there but generally nothing like enough decent play.

I accept that there is time to improve and the sub text of my original post was that a poor performance might just change our attitudes and possibly the way we play. Some serious reconstructive work is called for, I really hope we are up for it.

No one gave the ball away as much as Lampard, even putting it behind our full back for a throw in and at least Gerrard looked like he cared.

I was most surprised to see that the USA midfield was just as good as the English one, if not a tad bit better. Sad to see Emile Ivanhoe not scoring on his chance - the man has deserved it.

I don't think its quite as bad as you make out. Starting slowly is often a pre-requisite for teams that go on to win the tournament. If Green hadn't have made that howler then i think we would have all been satisfied with a solid start by albeit a below par performance. We know we can play better and i have utmost faith in Capello to make the necessary alterations to put things right.

The man is a winner and he will have learnt a bit more tonight.

Maybe he should have cared less and played more. Gerrard's all action style catches the eye but the number of misplaced paces, particularly those ambitious long balls that go straight to the opposition says it all, as does the gaping spaces he leaves in front of our back 4.

Both were woeful tonight, we never at any times looked in control of midfield and there was absolutely zero creativity, any decent team will murder us if we play those two in central midfield, though to be honest we have very few options.

Time to get creative Mr Capello!

Very disappointing, but hopefully a kick up the backside.

Dont know why we didnt bring on Joe Cole for Milner, SWp is absolutely useless, always giving the ball away everr time he got it.

Lampard did sweet FA. Rooney didnt do too much either.

Heskey looked good, just such a shame he didnt score that chance he had.

Still think we will win the group, its a disappointing result but far from over.

Fair enough, I can see you putting the best possible spin on that performance, but I have to say that tonight leaves Capello with an awful lot to do. I can see no area of the field that England were satisfactory, everything needs tweaking if not rebuilding completely.

Bit late for that though....dunno.gif

Only saw the first half and USA were the better team - England played in fits and starts constantly using Heskey as the focal point (truly world class football).

A caller on 606 put it quite well - England are comparable to Aston Villa in PL terms.

You got a point from the match and therefore are still doing quite well. Two more matches to qualify and I think you will.

Let the tabloid overreaction start and the vilification of Green start but don't let the fact the USA are a good team get in the way of the SUPER hype and SUPER condemnation.

EDIT: Heskey was brilliant from what I saw.

Someone on another forum stated Lennon was quality all game, its amazing what some fans see?

Like suggesting Gerrard, Lennon, Rooney or any English player had a good game....crylaugh.gif

Green will take all the stick but only Heskey and Johnson came close to earning their corn!

Watching tonight's game:

  • Lampard was AWOL.
  • Rooney frustrated.
  • Heskey played well, expected the miss but gives England a reason to play long ball
  • Gerrard all action hero antics is costly at international level
  • Defence was very slow compared to the USA attack

He wasn't called Radovan Chandler Fox by any chance?

Poor result and a pretty poor performance...

However, as long as we win the next two group games, I don't care about this draw. At least we didn't lose which is what I was thinking would happen towards the end!
