Kent Posted 14 October 2010 Author Posted 14 October 2010 Nowt wrong with what's been said. Promotion this season seems highly unlikely given our opening 10 games, but under Sven if he get's it right then there's every chance we can be one of the best teams in this league and slip in through the back door. Sven's worked under higher expectations before and succeeded, I think he'll love the announcement from the Thai's. He knows he's got a few quid to play with and other than breasts and a tidy clunge, there's nothing more he likes doing than blowing some cash on players. I wish I shared your optimism. I do, kind of...
Babylon Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 Leicester fans make something out of nothing... shocker.
hackneyfox Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 Pearson spent all of last season talking about the play-offs and also mentioned getting promoted via the top 2 at one point. He didn't get slated like this. You won't get Premier standard players coming here by letting them now in advance that you are happy to go up in 2 seasons time.

Chairman of the Bored Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 Good to have ambitions, but let's walk before we can run. After the shambolic defending we've seen thus far, a clean sheet would be a step in the right direction.
ithuriel Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 The guy has said he wants, not expects, just wants promotion this year and is happy to pay for it. Its a lot better than saying the usual claptrap of having a three year plan and scarpering after two years of milking the club dry.
kimsalabim Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 foxblogger has put on twitter that "in the 3 pts for a win era no side has been promoted to the top flight having taken just 8 points from the first 10 games". Maybe the new owners should be made aware of this!!! Records are there to be broken. We have a new owner who is pumping money in left, right and centre, like we always wanted, and the majority are STILL complaining!!! He wants promotion this season, so do we. We were fifth last year, if we are to move forward, there is not much further forward we can go from last year without going up is there? The money side is sorted, we have a world renowned coach who is proven can do the job now, so let's stop moaning now, and... GET BEHIND THE TEAM!!!
Solihullfox Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 It is this sort of moronic comment that makes our club and its leadership sound ridiculous. It's psychologically stupid and, in any case, serves no purpose whatsoever. All such a comment does is place a ridiculous burden on the players and management while providing additional incentive for every opponent, both on and off the pitch. Frankly it's the final straw for me - anybody up for joining a demonstration against the Thai owners ? Get the ambitious buggers out now !!!!! Please bear in mind how the Thais dealt with the last demonstration in Bangkok before pledging support.
MPH Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 Unbelievable. Just amazed at the criticism he is getting for wanting promotion this year. Isn't that what we all want? Isn't that the reason so many people jumped on Sousas back? He's our new owner and is clearly ambitious and is prepared to pump money into the club. What would people prefer him to say? " I'm new here and everyone seems nice but let's. Not bother about promotion this year.... let's just take our time.."
Guest Bilo Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 So we're criticised under Mandaric for not being ambitious enough and then lambasted under the Thais for being too ambitious. I love it here.

Edmund Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 So we're criticised under Mandaric for not being ambitious enough and then lambasted under the Thais for being too ambitious. I love it here. It's not a case of ambition bilo. It's a case of walking the walk instead of talking the talk. Talk is cheap. We've seen it all before. Mandaric promised us Premiership football and we ended up getting relegated in the same season. All it did was make him and the club look like idiots. The owners or management have no need to come out and say they will promise promotion as it's unnecessary as they can't guarantee that. Especially as were currently second from bottom. They should quietly get on and obviously tell the fans they will try their hardest to move the club forward. At least Sven's a clever bloke and hasn't outrightly come out and say I will guarantee promotion this season ala Sousa.

Thing is that Mandaric said we would be promoted, all that has been attributed to Raksriaksorn is that he wants promotion and is prepared to fund it. All of us want promotion but it doesn't mean we'll be calling for Sven's head and slinging our season tickets at the chairman if we don't manage it. Similarly, Raksriaksorn isn't holding an axe over Sven's head demanding promotion because the only thing he has promised is funds to Svennis to make promotion possible, not guaranteed. As a fan, I want promotion every August but I don't demand or expect it.

" I'm new here and everyone seems nice but let's. Not bother about promotion this year.... let's just take our time.." This. I am a little concerned that comments about being willing to spend will inflate the prices of potential targets. At the end of the day though the market pressures and other factors which come together to fix the price of any given player remain the same so there really shouldn't be that much to worry about. If a club needs money, if a player wants to move, if if somebody isn't getting first team football and would benefit from some experience elsewhere, then deals will be done irrespective of the tone of the rhetoric. We all want bloody promotion! How could he say anything else? Stop moaning, sit back and ENJOY. It will be interesting and massively entertaining at the very least, even if we fall short of the premier league.
cc_star Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 I don't know how popular this will be around here but I actually think we'll be better if we don't go up this year We have a squad of players who last season weren't good enough to get up, we then diluted the squad with a few weak signings in the summer which along with a departing manager upset the shape and organisation of the team Now we have an experienced manager, and well respected coach we may well rise up the table, but what would happen to this squad if we go up A few of them would do OK, Hobbs will if he finds his form, King, Dyer & Waghorn nobody really knows, but at the very least those 4 together would be in a 25 man squad We'll then need to sign 21 other quality players, to give a good account of ourselves in the Prem (OK I may be exagerrating a bit with21 to make my point, but you know what I mean) What effect will that have on the club, we could be in the Prem with a squad of misfits Whereas if we continue adding to the squad this season but miss out on promotion, sure we'll be gutted for a while, but then the summer signings will come in, which everyone knows is the only time you can sign players and build them into a true team, and then go on a promotion push with a far higher quality squad as a whole and then wholesale changes wouldn't be needed as soon as we get in the Prem. You can't just buy a promotion winning team, look at the super rich Derby team we beat in the playoffs A team has to be crafted and blended together, and I think the whole club will be stronger for an extra season of building, and an extra season carefully replacing a few players with higher quality players not just different players as appeared to be Sousa's aim

I see what you're getting at but just because he used the word want instead of would doesn't mean that the pressure mounted off the back of that comment is any less. Either way he's still hinting at the same thing. It's fairly obvious that we all want promotion but comments like these adds unnecessary pressure on players especially in the position we're in at the moment as we're many points off the playoffs which is a lottery in itself let alone the automatic places. It's probably being blown out of proportion now but I personally I think these things should be kept between chairman and manager and do all the talking on the pitch, Although it's unnecessary it's still not on the same scale as Sousa promising us promotion this season which is on par with writing yourself a suicide note.
Tommy G Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 I'd rather they came out and said they wan't to relegate us. That would have been quite funny
hackneyfox Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 cc_star It's that arrogance again (not yours, just that of many fans), 'we can afford to take it easy this year and assume that we'll go up next.' It doesn't work that way

I completely agree hun - I just thought that might outline what a huge task it'll be to get promoted this season!
maddog Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 Rekon we will win Saturday, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, np knows us.
adam1 Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 This season is only 10 games in. There are 36 games left to go. We are only 12 points behind. Anything is possible.... League 1?
conradno1 Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 what i dont understand is our owners are making sure the message gets out we have money why not keep that on the low we get players for cheaper there going on like were man city
Corky Posted 14 October 2010 Posted 14 October 2010 Sven hasn't even managed a meaningful game yet, and we are still well off the pace. Let him settle in and then say what you need, what is needed etc.

Agree with the sentiment, it really doesn't need saying that we want promotion and it adds unwanted pressure to the situation. Tbf to the owners, they were just innocently responding to a question and trying to give as positive response as possible to outline their potential/intentions. Coupled with the fact that Sven is desperate for some serious backing after the Notts County debacle, they probably felt they had to say some publicly as well as just in private. I don't think it'll faze Sven, but as you say, pressure on the players now. Given the way some of them reacted to various events under Sousa, I'm not entirely sure what's going to happen.
