Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 So they've mostly (all but one) been loanees, but how impressed have you been with them? Myself there's only one, Naughton, who has continually impressed me. Cunningham has be mostly good, without being what I'd call "impressive"; Davies is no great leap ahead of Hobbs really, so I'd rather we were using him more and improving him; Vassell isn't and never has been, the goal scoring dynamo we need... he's not even been that great a provider; Kirkland is a walking hospital case who seems little better than Weale (probably due to a lack of regular football, but the fact remains); and Bednar... don't even get me started. The Baggies must be laughing at us. Which leaves me weary of how Sven will use money in January. We have seen in the cases Kirkland, Vassell and Bednar that "Big Names" (I'm being generous here) don't necessarily create big performances. With more money than any Leicester manager has ever had before... is he gonna squander it?
Kingy_85 Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 These signings were all the actions of a desperate man, he had less than a week to get together a decent back four in the loan window . He has had time to scout and scour the depths of the footballing world over the last few months, I have the greatest expectations that he will sort us out and we can look forward to next season. This season is a write off and its all down to one man - Paulo Sousa. For his complete overhaul of a tactic that worked wonders the year before and his morbid bunch of signings.
MattyFromLE Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Naughton - Quality, Cunningham - a good prospect, Davies - I don't think he's bothered tbf, Vassell - Still got the tricks, needs a strike partner, Bednar - nearly as bad as Akinbiyi
Finnegan Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 I think Vassell's been fine, personally. If you were expecting him to be our main goal scoring force then you're an idiot - he's not even been played up front. Given he's cost us sod all and I'm guessing didn't have a pre-season he's looked alright. Bednar, eh, don't think Sven could have foreseen he'd settle as poorly as he has. He came with an excellent track record for a player at a club of our stature. I'll happily hold my hand up and say he's had far less impact than I imagined he would but I still maintain he has a credible pedigree and anyone who wants to deny that is just being stubborn for the sakes of being critical. At the end of the day, any comment challenging the signings Sven has made before he's even had a transfer window, let alone a whole summer, is a fairly pointless one. What exactly are you expecting from unattached players and emergency loans?
teblin Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Vassell in my opinion has been ok nothing more that that. He has scored once and created a couple and his pace has caused issues, better when he has been through the middle. The 2 full backs have been good but they do cause a bit of the defensive frailties as they are more attacking and Naughton does ball watch a tad. Bednar was a little bit of a desperate signing as Sven want Miller not him and he has been generally poor. Davies has the ability to be a top player, but can be a little casual at times, He is no doubt an improvement on what we had but think we need a couple of back to basics centre backs.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Nahh he'll do alright by us I think. Glad he's the one with the 12 mill over Sousa anyway. I am the same as you in that my feelings towards most of the signings so far are luke warm at best (apart from Naughton), but I believe these were all or mostly just intended to be stop-gap players anyway and not long term solutions. I would like to see Sven using his incomparably vast list of contacts that we are always hearing about a bit more though to bring in some little known and preferably younger players from foriegn leagues rather than simply drawing on the stock of journeymen touting for business in England.
teblin Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of the swedish national team turn up here. As they are going through a bit of a transition and we could pick up a couple of solid players on the cheap as a lot of their current squad is Sweden/Scandinavian based,
cc_star Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Naughton is amazing Davies & Cunningham are no better than were already here, and I'd put Vasell in that group too Given that Harry was probably the one touting Naughton around to experienced Championship managers, I think Sven's record has only upset the squad, now that the initial lift has worn off, and when the other teams play their 3 to 4 games in hand we'll probably back in or very near the bottom 3 again. Breaking it down Sven's record has been far from stellar and when you take into account how much it has displaced the current squad you could argue that it was a short-term tactic which is now starting to backfire especially as Berner has now said he reluctantly wants to leave... Who could blame Hobbs if he too was fed up with being dropped and wanted to leave... where would that leave us? With a load of Premier League has-beens who can't even get on the bench at their clubs and a smattering of U-21 talent who will rejoin their own clubs at the first possible opportunity. Sven's got a long way to go proving he can cut it in this notoriously difficult division before he goes spending any more cash on the injury prone footballing pensioners we're currently being linked with.

Just to clear this up. Hobbs has been dropped on numerous occasions this term because he has been error prone. Berners legs quite simply have gone.
SMX11 Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 I think Kirkland and Bednar were panic buys really he definately didn't want Bednar as his first choice, Ishmael Miller was his clear first choice but wasn't available. The defensive loanees have been positive until recently, I think we can trust him. At the end of the day you can only either get young, past it, injury prone or not good enough in terms of loanees. We will have to wait and see if these 'big' signings are going to come to fruition.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 December 2010 Author Posted 29 December 2010 What exactly are you expecting from unattached players and emergency loans? I expect that, if they're going to be played, that they be better than what we've got. With the exception of Naughton and Cunningham I don't see it. As for Vassell, I've never seen him as a goalscorer at all and have been pointing this out to all and sundry who have been. But he doesn't do anything Dyer could be capable of given the right opportunities.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 NAUGHTON has been very good, CUNNINGHAM has been good also, KIRKLAND is gash, BENDER is .......gash, DAVIES has looked good in patches but like most players selfish and couldnt give a stuff about LEICESTER if were honest?, VASSELL is good and getting better/fitter etc with every game. i Think generally SVEN knows quality players when he sees them and we have to trust his judgement and cheer the team to the rafters whatever team he sends out - im not a big fan of HOWARD or OAKLEY but when they pull on the Blue/Black/Yellow shirt of Leicester City i cheer them on all the same. Come on CITY :sge:

I am Rod Hull Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 What? is he a robot from an american comedy series?
RowlattsFox Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Naughton has been good but seems to get away with his defensive mistakes when Cunningham gets criticised for his. Cunningham is young and getting his first taste of professional football, he will make mistakes but on the whole he is good. Vassell has done alright, worth a gamble on Svens part. Kirkland and Bednar have been poor but I think most thought they'd be good signings at the time, seem low on confidence which is why they have been allowed to leave their clubs. Davies started off great but I think he's thinking more about January now than playing for us. Hopefully Sven will be able to pick up permanent signings January which will mean there will be more commitment from his singings because you take a risk with loan players who might not want to be here.
Howard9 Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 I agree about bednar and probably cunningham but vassell tbh has been good for us so far hes pacey for someone his age.

But he doesn't do anything Dyer could be capable of given the right opportunities. Berner has been shocking on his few showings this year, Cunningham might not be amazing but he's probably an improvement. And Dyer can't play on both wings at once, I'd quite happily see Vassell on the right an Dyer on the left. Unfortunately Sven has a fixation with Gallagher for some reason.
cc_star Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Just to clear this up. Hobbs has been dropped on numerous occasions this term because he has been error prone. Berners legs quite simply have gone. Davies & Cunningham have made just as many errors, and tbh even Naughton does. Hobbs is our player, one we should be growing and nurturing through a temporary drop in form, especially considering how young & obviously talented he is, not just dropping in the hope an injury prone premier league has-been fancies turning out for us for a couple of months. We made the loan moves to shore up our defence, it worked for a couple of games whilst we were benefiting from the 'new manager effect' but now thanks to poor tactics when the opposition has the ball, the temporary signings are proving no better than what is already on the books (Naughton aside, as were were dreadful at right-back)
Babylon Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 All the players he has signed are good players. They may not all be working out (Bednar and Kirkland) but they have proven quality and pedigree. Whether it be lack of fitness, bad form, them not fitting in or us not getting the best from them, they aren't bad players and almost any other team in the championship would have them in their squads if they could. Another point I'd make is that both players haven't been here long. It wasn't so long ago that Abe had been written off after only a few appearances and now he's a favourite of many. Some people take time to fit in and some fit straight away. So it seems somewhat harsh to judge them as failures so soon, not surprising as some managers are called to be sacked after one game. Let's judge the managers signings when he has had a transfer window. Personally I'd judge after the summer one as January isn't easy to get what you want. As for people saying stick with Hobbs, great in theory but the lad has been shocking this year and if we hadn't made the change things could have been worse than they are.

I think they are all decent players - Naughton has looked the most impressive and Bednar has been a huge disappoinment for me - I thought he looked a real handful when I saw him play for West Brom, but he has done nothing in any of the games i've watched for us. It really doesn't look like it'll work out for him at City. I think we need a top quality CM and an effective big man upfront in the window. Jason Roberts would be ideal (if unlikely!)
J.Lisemore Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 I hope he doesn't waste it. Me personally I would like to see some experianced Championship players, or some top players from the lower English leagues.

Wymsey Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Would be nice to have Kebe from Reading here and Taylor from Watford as well
J.Lisemore Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 "I would like to see some experianced Championship players, or some top players from the lower English leagues" Fryatt? Yep, looks like we'll miss him too unless we actually get a decent replacement in (Not a premiership reject whos past it). I'm not a big fan of him but he was our most prolific goalscorer by far.
