Gradel

Skysports reckons that Newcastle are plotting to get him in, does anyone know if we got any sell-on percentage a la Walsall with Fryatt?

Posted

Well it is a step up, he would be playing in the premiership in front of 52,000 people most weeks.

Hence why he said 'nonetheless'? :dunno:

Probably the only thing I look back on from the Pearson era with anger was seeing Max Gradel leave. He could have been massive for us I feel. I wouldn't be surprised to see a prem club take him, whether he steps up and is a success is anyones guess though.

On topic, we'll never know will we unless he actually goes anywhere. When the money comes in I guess we'll find out.

I wish we'd kept him. Seems to be firing them in lately

St James' Park is the perfect stage for a lad of Gradel's character and he'll revel in the place providing they give him time to settle and don't single him out as the only one making mistakes, as happened here.

Even when aspects of his game were a bit iffy, Gradel made chances and had chances almost every match And i don't think it'll be any different in the Premiership. I remember when Ronaldo arrived at United - all fancy tricks and not too much end product.

A season or two later and he was lethal. Walcott, 'though less spectacular and more troubled by injuries, has matured at Arsenal and Gareth Bale is another who was all hype at first, needed something of a rebore, and now looks lethal.

Pearson's treatment of Gradel left a big impression on me cos it convinced me he was nothing more than an organisational manager who was going to bore us to success. Anyone who wouldn't fit into his dour sarjeant major routine he couldn't be bothered with, would take the trouble to inspire.

People like Oakley and N'Guessan on the wing? Do me a favour. Oakley's been a good servant and N'Guessan might have done okay in the centre given chance but neither of them were ever going to be wingers.

But Gradel's tailor made for Newcastle and is just the sort of colourful footballer the club will take to and thrive on.

I cannot imagine we had a sell-on clause because it was abundantly clear we weren't goning to play him so how could we make a case for any sell-on? Much longer at Leicester and he'd have ended up at Tamworth getting the piss taken out of him and me.

Good luck to the lad. He was no DJ. He loved it here. But just when he was starting to make all those years in the Academy pay off we couldn't show a bit of faith and patience in him, show the boy that he was valued and make him feel a part of what we were doing.

And what did Pearson finally achieve for his attitude? Nothing. Along with his media interviews he just convinced the watching money men that he was small time and a nearly man. Pity really and I wonder if he'll learn from his errors cos I did notice in his last media interview he did at least try to answer the questions honestly. I hope he keeps it up.

Cos make no mistake Pearson can go on to be a good manager. As much as I've criticised I could sing his praises But how ironic it is that others will have to show the same faith and patience with him that he didn't have the good grace to show Gradel. Anyone can succeed off the back of ready made footballers but it takes real managerial talent to take raw material and make em special. And not until he shows he can do that will I be convinced of the bloke.

Ronaldo, Walcott, Bale and err Gradel.

Wow. :S

I've heard two of the first three described as "a busted flush" cos they looked so shit at times. I've also seen much less naturally talented wingers than Gradel who turned into crowd favourites. Ask Howard Riley at the Academy ground for a start. Or look back into the Stringfellow era or even the days of Steve Guppy if you want some less glamourous names. I didn't compare Gradel to any of those three but I did try to show what a bit of patience and a bit of trouble could produce.

Maybe i'm mis-remembering this - but i thought Pearson signed him from a french club??

Pretty much agree with the rest though!

You thought wrong.

8 good games in 26 and he's the next Ronaldo.

We weren't going to get Ronaldo in our league - but it doesn't excuse us chucking away what we did have.

Pretty sure we wanted a sell on clause in the deal, no idea if we got one though. I'm sure I remember reading a quote from Pearson along the lines of ' we want him to stay, he wants to go. But we'll be wanting a sell on fee should he ever be sold on '

He was here way before Pearson and a vital member of our Academy title-winning team. Sunderland hit him with everything in the final but he stuck in there and gave em the proverbial middle finger.

we could probably get him back as Bates won't want to actually spend money at Leeds and a front 3 of Dyer Vassell Gradel could be lethal

So why did he leave anyway? I always liked the look of him, and thought there would be more to come - was surprised to see City loan then sell him tbh

You make a strong point about the Pearson era fella.

Gradel was a flair player and Pearson wanted Oakley out wide because he was predictable.

Oakley on the rifgt has been one of the poorest tactical selections of recent years for me - along side long balls to Fryatt and Waghorn (never imposing in the air).

Oakley is a decent player in the centre - out wide...maybe 8 years ago.

I actually thought Sousa got more out of Oakley in the first few games of this season than any other City manager.

However, back to the point, Gradel was a talent lost.

You are right, Pearson was going to bring success to City, but it would have been a dry occasion - although I am still thankful

City under Pearson was a bit like a piss-up at a Methodist's pub - the land lord would have been stone cold sober. (City fans want their cake and eat it at times - I know I do).

I think the Bloomfield era left a deep impression on the Club and I remember a Fox front cover that illustrated the swagger of some of those great sides - "City got flares" with a picture of Shilton, Weller ans Worthington striding out onto the Filbert street pitch in 70's clobber.

No insult to Methodist Land Lords, but, be honest, you don't drink.

Under Sven...the roller coaster ride has yet to get going! He will deal us some interesting hands...

Up the City!
