Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 im 16 and looking to get an electrical apprentership, i sent 30 odd letters in the summer but couldnt find a company does anybody know a company that is willing to take on an apprentice?
Finnegan Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 I know it's not exactly what you asked for but this is definitely worth a shot. http://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-council-services/housing/about-us/apprenticeships/ You come out with a guaranteed, decent salary at the end of it and you'll be multi-skilled with all your gas and electric certificates as well. Isn't easy to get on to but, hell, you gotta be in it to win it.
lildave3 Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 I spent at least 18 months looking for one a couple of years back, had fuck all success. Although I would suggest learning how to spell apprenticeship for your next batch of letters.
Samilktray Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 1 of the hardest apprenticeships to get hold of apparently. The council 1s are good though, applied 2 years ago and fell at the final hurdle, know a few lads who got 1 and they're enjoying it.
Jackirius Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 My friend is taking a electricians course at college and he says it is quite easy to get an apprenticeship with a firm after he has completed it, puts you a step ahead of all the other candidates.

I'm currently doing a plumbing course and they give you a lot more links with possible apprenticeships.
surrifox Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 I spent at least 18 months looking for one a couple of years back, had **** all success. iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 Im an apprentice electrical engineer in my 2nd year.. I work for Thales Uk. Located on Scudamore Rd. Got mine via Connexions website. They've took 6 of us on in 2 years, may take some more on in September who knows. I know your position 'coz I was desperately looking after I left school and eventually got this job. Also that LETG training company are meant to be good, check them out.
lcfc_jme Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 ive came on here to ask for some help, not for a english lesson If you can't spell the thing you're after, then you're extremely unlikely to be taken on. I'd say it was more than helpful, if I'm honest.
Bugg Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 Seriously though Ross, If you go to college and they make an apprenticeship available to you, you can just leave the course that you're on and move to a day release course instead.
Bert Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 I'm currently on an Electrical apprenticeship. You'll find it very hard to get one at the minute, simply because it's halfway through the term. Your best bet would be to apply towards april time. If not, sign up for one on a college course, and once you've completed that you'll have a big head start on others.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 It is hard. Your best bet is with a big firm- though there will be many people applying- and thats if the firm is even taking on. William Davies (loughborough) are renowned for looking after their own- though dunno if there are any jobs going. The biggest firm around here is Electract and the last I heard they're laying lads off. I wouldn't do a full time college qualification, (think thats called the 'Tech Cert') as yeh you're learning about it in college, but employers want to see experience on site. If you can afford it you'd be much better off writing to some one man bands and asking if they'd take you on for free, even if its just two days a week. That way you're showing willingness to learn etc Failing that then try and get work at an electrical merchants- the sparkies equivalent to Plumbecentre if you like. When I lost my first plumbing job through redundancy, I started at my independant plumbing merchants a few weeks later. Over a period of time I was offered a few jobs, and have recently started working for a firm that had I not worked at the merchants I'd have never have got in with! You'll build up some contacts and even after 3 years of plumbing, working at the merchants was a real eye opener as to what fittings etc are available, and thats deffo helped me nnow I'm back on the kit

Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 7 February 2011 Author Posted 7 February 2011 Go to this web site. can i borrow your joke book?
Bugg Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 can i borrow your joke book? You could borrow his dictionary. That would be more useful.
DB11 Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 can i borrow your joke book? Wouldn't be much use to you; you wouldn't be able to read it.
Bugg Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 FFS, help the lad, not diss his written English Maybe you could bankroll him into his own business. That would help him
Suffolk_fox Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 I work for a college, and my job is to advise people like you. Your plan of action should be: 1) Join Apprenticeships.org - put your details on here and you will be emailed details of any electrical apprenticeships going in your area. Don't come up often, but you need to be in it to win it, so join now. 2) Speak to the local colleges that provide apprenticeships - some of them (like mine) hold files of people looking for apprenticeships in various sectors and get in touch with you when one comes in. They talk to employers all the time, so again it's worth a shot 3) Apply for FE courses at colleges NOW! Apply at more than one college because these are popular courses. This is a back up plan, but also, many companies approach colleges to take on their students once they've finished a course. They have a qualification, have stuck at it for a year and also the tutors know them. I lose count of how many students I've had recommended to companies from tutors!! I got someone an interview tomorrow for an apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance because the tutor gave me a good recommendation 4) Speak to friends and family - The number of apprentices taken on by friends of friends is too numerous to keep count of! Good luck!! It's tough, but I would take an apprenticeship over a degree ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!!! PM me if you need any further help or advice.
Matt Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 When doing my apprenticeship I found it very hard to find a job or get any leads on jobs, I got one but the company just used me as a labourer as opposed to actually teaching me anything I was doing a Carpentry/Joinery apprenticeship and when I went for the interview with the company they told me they were all brickies in the company but promised i'd work with the sub-contract Carpenter - Never touched a piece of wood in my whole time at the company apart from scaffolding planks, I was just a labourer for them, After their busy summer period they told me they were no good for me, I was no good for them and I then found somewhere via college. All I can say is keep trying, Keep hassling college, Personally I didn't like this option and felt they offered me nothing but visit Connextions, and don't just send letters, go and visit companies, go and visit electrical suppliers, get your name about. Getting a job as an apprentice is really hard because no-one wants the hassle, effort and time of training someone up, they only want experience people, however it's a catch 22 because if they don't want train people up they will come a point where there are no experienced people. I found the only people that really wanted to help me were 1 man bands, blokes on there own that need a helping hand but then those type of people/companies cannot afford to take an apprentice on. It's hard, it's disheartening but keep trying.
