davieG Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 From the Merc San Jose Earthquakes, the Major League Soccer team once owned by Milan Mandaric, will be Leicester City Reserves' opponents in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Belvoir Drive training ground today (2pm). The Quakes are in England on a pre-season tour ahead of the start of the MLS season next month. They have already been involved in warm-up games against second-string teams from Birmingham City and Tottenham Hotspur. They beat Birmingham 4-0 on Tuesday and their squad has been augmented for the tour by triallists from the Netherlands and Ghana as well as former Hertha Berlin striker Ellis McLoughlin and Matt Luzunaris, who has experience with Austrian club SK Rapid Wien. City first-team coach Didi Hamann is keen to organise as much competitive action as he can for the reserves, who do not play in a league. Their last outing, a 1-0 win over Southampton, included eight players who have first-team experience, and City are again expected to field a strong side against their American guests. The match is understood to have been arranged while Mandaric was still at the helm at the Walkers Stadium before he sold the club to the King Power Group and took control at Sheffield Wednesday. Back in 1973, Mandaric bought one of the West Coast franchises in the fledgling North American Soccer League and set up the Quakes, with the likes of George Best and Colin Bell turning out for the club. Today's match will also bring back memories for club ambassador Alan Birchenall, who first linked up with Mandaric when he agreed to join the Quakes in 1977 and scored three goals in 17 appearances. There is a Quakes shirt that he wore still on display at the Walkers Stadium and, although he will be involved at a half-term signing session, Birchenall is still hoping to meet the American visitors during their short stay in the county
Darkon84 Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Unfortunate timing to be playing a team called 'The Earthquakes'
DB11 Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Really? I have a game today down there, 2pm kick off. It's Under 15s v Brentford though. I would say I'll keep an eye out if I see anyone, but I wouldn't know

DB11 Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Should you be reffing Leicester games if you're a Leicester fan? It's only under 15s where they use local young referees But if you want to know how it works at professional level, then yes, yes I could. You cannot referee the team of the region that you live in (so I'd have to move!). A Premier League referee that I know cannot referee Leicester (he lives in Leicester) but he has, on numerous occasions, refereed a Football League Championship team that he supports well (for obvious reasons I can't say which team that is!)

Am I right in thinking your friend is our very own Kevin Friend? Or have I had a shocker.
samjohnson Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 When i saw this... I thought we were playing the New Zealand national squad
Joe. Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 More interestingly, Tunch is making his long-awaited comeback.
purpleronnie Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 They're a good side they beat Houston 2-1.
StanSP Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Yep we'll see how long Tunch lasts. Hopefully the full 90 mins!
deep blue Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Good luck Tunchev Exactly, that's the main interest. Let's hope he has a good, full-out game and comes out of it unscathed.

AlphaMaleFox Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 From Ian Stringer's Twitter : Reserves won 3-1 against San Jose Earthquakes today. Chamberlain, Hicks and Uchechi (pen) with goals. Tunchev played 60 mins ok

Doesnt Stuart Atwell live in this 'Region' though?
Aleksz Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Doesnt Stuart Atwell live in this 'Region' though? Nuneaton. His dad referee's in my league (Nuneaton & Bedworth Minor) and he's just as useless.
Soar Fox Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Doesnt Stuart Atwell live in this 'Region' though? I hope so. Don't want him anywhere near officiating one of our matches.
Soar Fox Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 Friend's a Bristol City fan He also supports Glen Parva F.C of the alliance league, sometimes goes down and watches there games.
