Mistakes Sven needs to correct.

In the game against Cov, Vassel showed the sort of thing he is capable of in the first half. Darrius and Kyle murdered them. Sven's mistake? He brought Vassel in closer to Yukubu after half time, maybe worth a try but he should have reverted back to the original style even though Naughton continued to excel, when it became obvious that the change wasn't working.

Gallagher flatters to deceive, he is a show pony when what we really need is someone who can do the business. He is a 'big girl's blouse' who is reasonable with the dead ball. He plays wide and NEVER goes around any defender. Can't tackle, won't tackle either. A change of player or a change of formation is a must.

We concede fewer goals when Bruno Berner is playing, we need to stop giving away soft goals. It is unfortunate that Bruno had a 'stinker' in Swansea soon after Sven took over, but we need him back now, in a back four formation. ( Van Aanholt stays if we play 5-3-2 ).

Sol Bamba plays better at right centre as a defender, and looked at times confused when forced to play LCD to accommodate Bruma. Bruma may become a super player, but we look more comfortable with Mee and Bamba as they were, unless we play all three in a 3-5-2 formation.

This has it's merits because we rely too much on Yuki Abe to hold the midfield together and protect our back four - Gallagher and King in the same team with the formation we use now puts huge pressure on Yuki and the back four because neither could beat a five year old in a one on one tackling situation, and sometimes we do need to win the ball back.

Ricardo or Weale, I'd love to say neither. If Weale plays then lets in an easy long shot we'd all want Ricardo back. If Ricardo plays and 'flaps' a high ball and the opposition score we'd all want Weale back. Only real criticism so far for Sven is that he should have got someone better than both of them in January ( unless Ricardo saves the penalties at Wembley that get us promoted! ).

I agree with all of that.

Mee -- Bamba is better because then the team is balanced with a left footed left centre half and a right footed right centre half.

I agree, however these things are easier said than done! It is hard to know which players will show up for games and when.

Its already been discussed that it was perhaps a mistake against cardiff playing bruma in midfield but a little more concentration and if we were a little more confident in the final third i feel we could have come away with something.

As for coventry on saturday, i feel a mentality of just 'turning up' for some players does creep in. We know All players have good and bad games and hit form at different times, so i think its wrong to single out certain players as im sure sven sees enough to play them in the first place. that and the fact that its our team so i dont particularly like singling out certain players, they know what job they have to do in each game and im sure the research is done on the opposition too which can also affect where and how players will play.

These little niggles,be tactical or personel wise, will always happen at any club and its just the way ti goes sometimes. I wasnt there on saturday so no i cant really comment, buh by the sounds of things coventry turned up to stop us playing . Therefore unless we begin to exploit there weaknesses, which we may well have set out to do, then its always going to be a tight game!

Im just happy were not losing and despite a 'difficult' performance from us, we still look VERY dangerous.

Thing is i feel Van Aanholt is receiving some pretty harsh criticism, He didn't have his best game against Cov but he wasn't shockingly bad, although he was beaten to easily for the first goal! Bruno is a good championship player but he does not fit into Sven's style of play, Both Van Aanholt and Naughton offer pace and thats what Sven wants. Vaz was superb i thought! he showed real class at times as well as coming back and tackling! i gave him MOTM! It's funny how you said that you noticed Vaz pull closer to the yak, well this is what i think he should do normally but he seemed to be less affective as you said. As for the Yak i gave Westwood a standing ovation following that one on one, he came out made himself big and showed why he is highly rated, but then Yak shanked his next effort! I feel at times though he thinks too quickly for some of our players, the deft touch back heel in the area was superb, I think it was to King but King wasn't on the same wavelength! I was discussing the Bruma think with my mate, Sven obviously want's a team of "Footballers" even in his back four! I liked the balance Ben Mee offers being left footed, and the fact he puts his head where is hurts! However Bruma does look class, he showed a good turn of pass and composure on the ball!

Keep the faith lads! one defeat in 10 is a brilliant record!

Sven's record since joining us shows he's not really doing anything wrong as far as results are concerned. Our 4-3-3 works brilliantly when the flow of the game is in our favour, but I think it's quite ineffective when opposing team have the ball or play in a rough physical manner, I think Sven is playing this system at the expense of some of our players, he's obviously chopped & changed personnel to suit the system, but I still don't think he's getting the best out of everyone

If the season started Oct 16th, we're now 3rd (down from 1st a couple of weeks ago)

Vassell is wasted out wide and Gally & Dyer struggle to influence games in any meaningful way , coupled with Yakubu's lack of effort - When the opposition have the ball it can be like we're playing with 8 men sometimes

I think we need to move to 2 men upfront, both playing a more central role, to do that we need to play 4-4-2 or 3-5-2

We don't have the midfield personnel to successfully play 4-4-2 because we'd struggle even more to impose ourselves on games, which leaves 3-5-2 (5-3-2 depending which team has the ball) and as I've mentioned all over the place, we do have the personal to slot into this formation quite naturally

Goalie

Bamba - Bruma - Mee

Naughton ------------------------------ Van Aanholt

Abe - Wellens - King

Vassell - Yakubu

PVA cannot play in a back 4, he's defensively rubbish. We'd also stop wasting Vassell out wide and it would also play to Waggy's strengths to play with a partner, playing to our fullbacks strengths, having the extra body at the back when needed & playing a forward down the middle who closes opposing players down, could suit everyone better - the only thing against it, is it's too late in the day to change things - or is it?

Although as the table shows, 3rd since he took over - he's not really making any mistakes that need correcting, but perhaps a tweak can take us to the next level?

The mistake's are being made on the pitch! Think about the goal, King is a few feet away from Ricardo when he hits it, He hits it that hard that it was incredibly difficult to save, i do not for one minuet think weale would have stopped it! Yes Van Aanholt should have done better in stopping the ball into the box, but why was King allowed so much space in the area? Personally attacking wise i think Van Aanholt is better than Naughton, he seems more direct and gets at the defenders straight away and likes to take it to the line or into the box (note he didn't have his best game against Cov), Naughton however is better defensively but is still quality coming forward don't get me wrong! Ben Mee is a good player but Bruma is a better footballer! he has a quality turn of pace and seems very controlled on the ball! Its not like were a disaster, we have lost one game to another promotion rival and had an unlucky result against Cov! I think some fans need to calm down! especially stringer saying he feels QPR could get a "couple" of goals! we have quality in the team! and the reason Sven likes Ricardo is because he is almost a sweeper, he likes to get the ball and get it out as fast as he can! and he is confident enough to receive the ball at his feet and pass it short!, chanting Weale during a game isn't going to help his confidence so while he is in the starting XI we have to get behind him! after all he is a big game player and has had a great career. Lets just get behind the lads and help push them over the line!

errm yep pretty much - i like Gally but its true he offers nothing defensively and doesnt beat his man on the wing as he has no pace his main asset being the deadball delivery. In Sven we MUST trust :sge:

Must admit, I think I'm sold by the 3-5-2/5-3-2 idea.

I generally do not like 3-5-2, too easy to counter in my view, but it is hard to deny that we have the players for it.

The question is, should we make the change at this point in the season?

Only 12 games left, no chance to turn things round if it goes wrong..... So no.

We are leaking goals even when playing reasonably well, we have to make a change..... So yes.

I don't fooking know......:dunno: :dunno:

We've been top of the form tables almost constantly since he arrived. I think it may be a little early into our "blip" to be talking about formation changes.

3-5-2 sounds all good and everything but it is leaving us open to be countered. Also most of the goals we've let in in the past games have just been silly mistakes that can be patched up with some concentration

Posted

Aanholt's out for 3 to 4 weeks so it's a 352/532 is academic now and shows that we haven't the depth to consider this as a serious option

Fair enough, but with only 12 games left, how long can we let the 'blip' continue? No right answers here, just hope that Sven can get them back on track.

van Aanholt injured for 3+ weeks, knocks the 3-5-2 idea firmly on the head....;)

Sven doesn't need to correct any mistakes at all. He's building a team that can handle play-offs. We have, maybe, lost a few points because Sven tries to see where players fit in(last one Bruma).

This try-out must be done before play-offs. Sven rather takes a loss of points before and winning when it matters.

Our weakness is not in the goalkeeping, defence or midfield departments but in goalscoring. Gallagher Dyer Vassell and Yakubu are not dangerous enough to strike fear into the opposition's defenders. Apart from Yakubu you wouldn't bet on a goal coming from the others.

Posted

Don't think there are too many things that need correcting tbh. The thing that stands out for me though is since the first half at direby, our crisp, fluent passing game seems to have disappeared. Ok we showed it a few times on saturday but not to the extent we have in previous games. Not sure whether this is down to us not playing as well or the opposition have sussed that if they harass us it knocks us off our stride?

Vassell definately motm for me against cov though as previous posts have said

Things Sven needs to correct...

1) Becoming Leicester manager in the first place

Reason? Because its quite clear that he is not the man for the job, as we drew with Cov and lost at Cardiff, and the players he signed are'nt as good as Messi or Ashley Cole. It is all his fault (oh, what was he thinking?!?) and he will never be as good as MON.

How to rectify the situation? Buy a DeLorean, some plutonium, and create the Flux Capacitor....Need I say more?

Vassell disappoints me. He doesn't score and rarely create goals or get into goalscoring positions. What is he for?

I have noticed a disturbing trend with the vast majority of our players...

Man for man we outclass our oposition every week, our players seem determind to beat their man in a one on one situation, then pass the ball backwards, after they have done the work to beat their respective oponent.

I can not understand their belief that it is nesercary to consistantly create some space or to make an oponent move to cover a passing option only the to chose a defensive option by either moving back or passing back to retain possesion. We seem to be playing with fear of losing possesion. I love us to keep the ball, but once we have it it is almost like we are trying to create the perfect plays & if we do not, then we just start again & maybe we do not take a chance by taking on a oponent for pace or shoot or cross the ball. It is very frustrating to watch!

I had doubts about DV when he arrived. He doesn't score goals, but he's never scored goals. He does create space and chances though regardless of what you say. I have warmed to him immensely.

Very interesting observation, Dave.

3-5-2 was all the rage about 10/15 years ago but became redundant as more and more sides either played 3 or 1 up front, completely nullifying the previous advantage of having an extra player in midfield and also defence, when countering the 4-4-2.

As you are clearly an astute student of tactics and systems may I suggest you study Napoli. As a Napoli supporter myself and having streamed virtually all of their games in Serie A this season, it is fascinating to watch them play this system with just a few subtle tweaks to how we remember it in this country. Napoli are the only senior team in Europe playing this system.

I agree that 3-5-2 would probably be found out if played as in the days of Martin O'Neill but I can see the Napoli way making a return to England shortly.

Just out of interest, how are Napoli doing playing this way?
