Who Would be your Starting XI for Next Season.

I think we need to focus on strengthening the defence firstly - the loans of Miguel Vitor, Ben Mee, Kyle Naughton and Patrick van Aanholt all expire and of those four we should be looking to buy two, preferably Mee and Naughton (though I certainly wouldn't scoff at a cheeky deal with Vitor) to give some continuity from this season into the next. If we can bring the club back to Jack Hobbs' good books then a defensive line-up of Naughton - Hobbs - Mee - A Loanee LWB could prove brilliant.

In terms of our midfield I think we're pretty solid. The current Richie Wellens / Andy King / Yuki Abe line-up is working at this level, and Matt Oakley's current form as a holding midfielder is promising for him to provide a useful contribution there should Abe's form dip as it has done this season. I do, however, think we should be looking towards a 4-4-2 to solidify the team defensively and if we go down this route we need some dedicated RM/LM players. Lloyd Dyer is not good enough to be a regular first teamer at Championship level so LM is certainly somewhere to focus on and, whilst Paul Gallagher possesses brilliant ability and - as has already been mentioned - is the most improved player under Sven Goran Eriksson, he lacks the pace I think we need on the wings. Here, I think Reading's Jimmy Kebe could be a brilliant signing - although it would take a lot to lure him away from the Royals, particularly should they make the play-offs and we don't. He is certainly a player I'd love to see more often at the Walkers. And let's not forget Franck Moussa, whose season at Doncaster has been quietly impressive - perhaps he is ready to step-up to the mark in a Championship first XI, as Max Gradel has done for Leeds this season? There has also been talk of Lee Bowyer: what a signing he would be. If we're talking here about consolidating the defensive capabilities of our midfield, a crunching tackler like Bowyer would be a dream signing.

Up front I think we need some consistency and perhaps a permanent move for Diomansy Kamara could prove fruitful. I also think it's about time Gallagher has a chance as a regular centre forward: perhaps a signing could be made to partner him as a regular centre forward? I think Yakubu's inconsistent performances do not justify his wages and we would be ill-advised to sign him on a long-term contract. Danny Graham has been a popular choice here already and whilst his signature would be a coup, would he leave Norwich to join us?

Finally, the situation between the sticks. Neither Chris Weale nor Ricardo have impressed this season with both putting-in some farcical performances. Fresh blood is needed at the back, but as for who to sign? Kieran Westwood is out of contract at the other end of the M69 and is a favourite here, whilst Fraser Forster has done well at Aberdeen on loan from Newcastle. Of course over the last three seasons we have used more goalkeepers than any other club (probably), with the likes of David Stockdale and Mark Bunn impressing in short spells in the East Midlands. And what happened to Michael Rensing, the German keeper on trial with us in January?

The bit about dropping Wellens.

I totally agree with everything you said, pity we don't have more people that post stuff thats actually worth reading

Wellens has really bugged me this season. He's shown what he's capable of and that he can absolutely dominate a midfield and has a terrific range of passing. He has the ability, he just doesn't reach his potential in enough games. I really want him to be successful here but if his inconsistency continues into next season then we've got to think about a replacement playmaker.

Wellens is supposed to be our creative force, our playmaker if you will. For me he is simply not good enough in that role, paricularly against tougher opposition. Sure he huff and puffs and appears to put the effort in but to me it is mostly bluster.

A really decent defensive midfielder might give him the freedom to really play but at the moment he is just another supporting midfield player, good to have one in the team to do the 'bits and pieces' but not two or even three as we have now.

Totally agree with both of you, see my comments about him in the POTY thread.

He pisses me off more than any other player in the squad because he has shown he has the the ability to dominate games but rarely does, especially in the games when we're up against it.

Seems to play alot better when he has Yuki alongside him

I think the bigger question is whether he'd leave Watford for us.

And Forster's been at Celtic not Aberdeen.

Naughton or rangel, new keeper (possibly westwood), new left back, a back up centre mid, new winger and a striker who can actually score and mayb a nother centre back as backup seeing as we will lose half our squad

I know he is injured at the moment, but what do you all think of Matthew Gilks, Blackpool GK. I think his contract expires at the end of the season, and Blackpool might look to reduce their wage bill.

Would rather see a Comanding cb alongside Bamba Matty Elliott/stevie Walsh type of defender but Sven no Ricardo please god NO

New Keeper

Naughton / New RB

Hobbs

New CB - with experience

New LB - with pace

Gallagher

Wellens

New CM

New LW - who can beat a man

Kamara

New ST

Some will call this pessimistic, some realistic...

Agree with nearly everthing in this but would keep onto Andy King]

Westwood - Speroni - Controversial but with QPR going up it would surprise me if they wouldnt be looking for another keeper so maybe Paddy Kenny? Bit of a cock but would do a job.

Posted

It's a tough one. Sven wants to play 4-4-2 (or variant thereof) according to interviews but, if we move to that system it brings into question the future of one of Wellens/King.

Westwood/Speroni

Naughton

Mee/Tunchev (If fit)

Experienced/Organising CB

Cunningham

Pacey RW

King

Strong, athletic CM

Pacey LW

Deeper lying creative type (Hoolahan/Pacheco)

Mobile striker able to hold the ball up (Morison/Graham)

So, not much to do then :-/

He's past it mate, thats why he's getting no games at Fulham. I'm more inclined to give Tasos Lagos a go.

Yeah, he looks like he's going to be quality!
