Teleportation breakthrough

http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-04/quantum-teleportation-breakthrough-could-lead-instantanous-computing

In a real-life use of Schrödinger's theoretical paradoxical cat, researchers report that they were able to quickly transfer a complex set of quantum information while preserving its integrity. The information, in the form of light, was manipulated in such a way that it existed in two states at the same time, and it was destroyed in one spot and recreated in another...

...This is a major advance, as previous teleportation experiments were either very slow or caused some information to be lost.

It's obviously not much use to us and if it were ever to be possible with matter, it would likely be a long time from now, but it's pretty amazing stuff when you think about it.

Science is ridiculous. There are an irritatingly huge amount of people that are 100x smarter than me. I can't even comprehend this type of thing :P

I was talking to some mad scientist about teleportation in the late 90's and he seemed to think that it would be fully up and running by 2015. He said something like, "it's simple youth, all we've gotta do is work out how to split atoms and molecules and then put them back together exactly in the same form.......instantly. And I'll let you into a little secret youth........we're already very close to cracking it". Then he looked at me, tapped the side of his nose and walked off.

Great guy.

teleportation isn't going to happen in the next 100 years , the complexity of destroying and re-forming the same atoms, on the scale needed to move even a paper clip , at the same moment in time is beyond comprehension.

Also given the world's too busy blowing the crap out of each other for not believing the same things as each other, we won't spend enough time on this until everything calms the **** down, which it won't until all civilisation is destroyed: then we'll need millenia just to get back to this point before we start working on teleportation and what not.

So they teleported light?

So they made a light and instantly it was also light over there?

Of course I'm being facetious, but quantuum physics is very much The Emporer's New Clothes in many respects. I can look at a TV, Car, Plane or even a Nuclear Reactor and "basically" understand how it works, but quantuum I've just got to accept what I'm told, apparently.

Scientists are the secular priesthood.

Like anything... If the boffins can see how this will aid in blowing the crap out of each other... i have no doubt it will be completed much more quickly. lets face it.. the space race was all about war and we went from the impossible to walking on the moon* in les than 15 years.

*subject those who believe its was faked. :)

Bloody hell! After a few Sunday dinner drinks I read this. I know that when I wake up In the morning after continuing to pass alcohol through my lips well into the evening I will wish I could go back in time!

Just because you don't understand it doesn't make scientists priests. Science is nothing like most religion, it's pretty much the very opposite.

on a much less apocalyptic note to my last post, Science and religion do have some similarities in that they both claim to have explained everything they've said, but no-ones quite sure what these explainations are or for that matter, where they are.

That's pretty much what I meant Al. Also people just choose to believe either spiritual or scientific leaders without looking for themselves. There's many who say they're Christian, Muslim, Hindu, who have never read the Bible, Qur'an or the Vedas - they just accept what their priests say is in those words, without questioning it. We do that a lot with science without questioning it. I'm not saying I don't believe - just that maybe scientists aren't above manipulating the public's unquestioning belief as some "religious" leaders have in the past.

Took me about a day to work out who that is, and it should have been obvious! I must have seen that film about 10 times. The only similarity is the thoughful and inquisitive nature of the character and the hair - longish and messy.

Only El Empty could just be casually hanging out with a 'mad scientist.'

He wasn't actually a full-time scientist, we were 'riggers' at the time, but he was a part-time chemist and a bit mad! I think when we had this conversation we were on a break from putting up the staging for an Alanis Morissette gig. Great days Eddie, great days.

Good point, well made sir!

or this guy...........

Who is that guy? I know I know it and have seen the programme but I'm buggered if I can remember who it is!

It's Timothy Claypole from Rent-a-Ghost.

To be fair, I do think that alot of science is very dogmatic. And there are far too many lying scientists with agendas who are in the worst of secret societies. There are too many murders and suspicious deaths of scientists working on big schemes to deny this from what I've heard about. Total scumbags, some of them are, and are working on more ways to supress and kill off billions of humans. Very similar to the big dogs of modern religion really.

I love a bit of science, but when the scientific establishment/elite are in the wrong hands then we're in trouble. And they have been in the wrong hands for decades now - supressing breakthroughs that would greatly help mankind in favour of technology that only benefits big business.

Ah, I knew I knew him! I can only remember the name of that programme but I defo watched it when I was a nipper.

Great guy.

I used to coach the squash team at Cern, Switzerland - home of the Hardron collider - and this was mentioned then. Their American counterparts' progress towards that end is an awesome step forward and opens up the beginnings of such exciting possibilities. The story - and its implications - should have made the front pages of every major newspaper in the world. It's another "Great Step for Mankind" moment.

That's because you wouldn't understand the details.

I'm confident that if you wanted to study as hard as a quantum physicist so you actually understood, they'd openly welcome you and explain it in full detail
