I don't get all this Wellens hating. He talks more than most of the other players (as well as Kaper and Mills). And although he sometimes slows the play down, he generally drives with the ball which is something that King doesn't do. Hull away last season, Wellens was more advanced, and we looked better. His passing and vision is excellent (hence he made the most assists last season), he charges opponents down (at Forest, it lead to Oakley's goal), and always puts a foot in and is not scared to tackle (unlike King and Gallagher).

Watch last season's review on DVD. Study his passing, and in particular crossing. It is excellent. Hull away: he picked out Vassell with a beautiful ball, Cardiff home: his cross for King was inch perfect, Leeds away: his first time ball caused the defender to use his hand etc.

I do think that sometimes he slows the play down which people look at, but so does King. In fact, I think King does it more often. Overall though, Wellens is a technically gifted player that has attracted interest from the Premier League before. In my opinion, he is key, and is the best midfielder Leicester City have had since Muzzy Izzet.

Proves how fickle this place can be, at times last season people were saying that should be captain. Is Wellens the new player-to-hate?

It doesn't really bother me, but I suppose it does almost guarantee he will start at Coventry.

How is it fickle? Is it the same team as last year?

No. new players have come in who some deem better.

My main criticism of him in the past has been his poor concentration and inconsistent application, but he's willing to get stuck in and seems to have a big personality so maybe he'll step up and make a good captain.

Mind you, it's a predictably unimaginative solution to go for a member of the playing staff. Why not give it to someone in the stands? Like me, for example. I'm confident I have all the necessary qualities

To criticise aspects of Wellens's play is not 'hating'. Seems there is no middle ground to ever be found when rating players.

He had an exceptional 3 months last season and this gave him a free pass for the large parts of the season where he was inconsistent. I like him as a player, but to me, he is the type of character who does not stamp his authority on a game when the chips are down and he wouldn't be my first choice for the armband.

As many others are saying, what does this mean for King?

This decision worries me massively

Ric is this personal ?

Did Richie have a go on one of your nearest and dearest?

Just asking as you seem massively unhappy with this.

For me, It's not that he slows down play, it's that he wastes possession attempting spectacular passes which, 70-80% of the time, don't come off.

I can see King leaving now, not for the reasons stated but if we sell him for 6m, we can get a winger which is a priority area we need, and buy another striker along with Jong tae se

We'd be fools to get rid of King. We have no need to sell at all and he's one of our biggest threats. He won't be averse to being dropped when he's off form, judging by Sven's comments at times towards the end of last year.

Must mean Oakley is leaving.

I'd have preferred Danns as captain. Perhaps it's too early.

Can't see Wellens being 1 of the 3 in midfield with our new lineup though.

Ok, I used the wrong word.

Who would you give it to then, when the chips are down? Give it back to King? No way is he a leader. And this excludes the new players because they haven't been tested yet in the division.

But don't all teams have a player that tries a killer pass? For example, Gerrard will try it at Liverpool, and Adam used to try it at Blackpool, Wellens does it here, at Leicester. Now, I don't think any player has a 100% rate of killer passing.

Eh? Mills, Danns, Schmeichel and St.Ledger are more than tested in this league, and I'd take 2 of that list ahead of Wellens.

Out of all the players we have Mills and Kasper are the only 2 to have a more or less nailed down place in the XI in my opinion. So for me it has to be one of those even if they're new.

Yes, but most of them can actually pull it off, and make decisions on when to try the killer pass and when to build slowly. Wellens on the other hand will just try to force the issue & give away possession.

Look at the first goal on Saturday, we were in possession and fairly comfortable but wellens, rather than retaining possession by playing a simple pass and building until space appears for the killer pass, tried to play a ball that wasn't on, surrendered possession and they ended up scoring.

Wellens is a good choice compared with others I guess. King just isn't vocal enough and disappears in matches too much to stamp any real kind of leadership on anything. Kasper will be a good choice in a few years no doubt but he's a bit too vocal, especially when he shouts at his defence when he's as much to blame, which would possibly make it hard for players to follow his leadership else where. Mills again will be an awesome choice in a few years but you can only imagine it would be fairly bad for moral for a new player to pick up the armband as he's straight through the door. Atleast with Wellens he would command respect from the newer signings due to his general character and already have it from the current squad, I can see him being a bridge between the two sets of players in that respect. Plus he's the kind of player you'd like to have on your side when things get heated, he tends to get in there. So long as he can hold down a place long enough to have any influence.

Left field choice... Bamba ???

I agree with this, but I think he tried to flick it on a nobody was there due to Nugent being alone. However, it was blind, he might have looked first but he did put us under pressure. Glad he did it in a friendly.

Im happy if this is the decision.

I remember last season away at Ipswich. Attwell was having a laugh in the snow but Kingy didnt apply near enough pressure. The Ipswich lads were in his ear but it was left up to Richie to do the talking for us as Kingy didnt seem to force the issue whatsoever. The traditionalists will say thats good but the realists would argue that he should have been in Attwells ear, mainly due to the fact Attwell is a complete clown. From that night on I never saw Kingy as a leader. Richie is more vocal and IMO as good a player if not better.

In regards of Kasper and Mills I couldnt argue their case, to early to tell. When Kasper smashed the ball away after the Madrid goals you could argue that this showed passion, but also you could argue it showed petulance.

I'm with Flair

Svens 1st mistake of the season.

Hope this doesn't guarantee him a place in the side, he needs a rocket up his arse!

Wouldn't worry too much pal, they're deciding tomorrow. RW has to be one of a short list though.

wait. hasn't sven said a few times that this is a decision that is still yet to be made? im not sure about wellens myself. i'm sure it would be easier to make the decision if you watched the whole team in training everyday and new them personally and professionally. My only objection is that wellens did not shine against madrid and for me was not quite effective as he could have been towards the end of the season. plus he looks like bobby davro.

I made my mind up on him last season when he went missing from March onwards. He also seemed to be the first to spout his mouth off when Sven started signings lots of players last season. I don't think he's the future for us with our ambitions and who we are bringing in.

He's 31, never played in the premier league before and I don't think he's good enough.

I will however get behind him if he plays and is made captain. It's the last I'll moan about him until he goes missing again. I hope I'm proved wrong.

I find it funny that the same people who keep saying "Let's get out of the Pearson era" are also praising the fact that Wellens is captain.

If we play 4-3-3, then choose 3 midfielders;

Abe

King

Danns

Wellens

Does Wellens make your XI?

Yes!

Wellens -- Abe -- Danns

I've said all along King isn't good enough, I'm not changing my mind now. He scores goals yes, that can be replaced by a better player with more attributes if required.
