Yojoe36 Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Yes! Wellens -- Abe -- Danns I've said all along King isn't good enough, I'm not changing my mind now. He scores goals yes, that can be replaced by a better player with more attributes if required. I do agree with you there. King seems absent at times. Late last season, he dropped form massively
CountesthorpeFox Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I made my mind up on him last season when he went missing from March onwards. He also seemed to be the first to spout his mouth off when Sven started signings lots of players last season. I don't think he's the future for us with our ambitions and who we are bringing in. He's 31, never played in the premier league before and I don't think he's good enough. I will however get behind him if he plays and is made captain. It's the last I'll moan about him until he goes missing again. I hope I'm proved wrong. I dont think 31 is a bad age.
fatmando Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I'm happy with this. Work rate is immense and not afraid to get stuck in. Sets a good example. Just hope he keeps his head.
StarFox Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I would be happy if Wellens was captain for this season. King as a habit of giving some generic responses to questions sometimes, plus he rarely looks you in the eye . King also lacks the grit and determination to change how he or the team should play after a loss. From what I've seen, he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. However he's still a pretty good goalscorer. Plus, I think Wellens being last years player of the year is a good enough reason why he should wear the captains armband.
martyn Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Yes king can go missing in games but I can't believe how many of you are willing to casually throw aside a 22 year old who gets 15 goals a season from midfield. That is not replaced easily.
Aberdeen_fox Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Surely this means Wellens is a guaranteed starter otherwise it's a stupid move. Don't think it necessarily means King is off but that he isn't a guaranteed starter. Although if King is warming the bench like on Saturday, where the last pre-season friendly is normally a good yardstick as to the line-up for game one, he'll probably end up going off on loan somewhere.
Corky Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I thought people have concerns about the amount of goals we'll get this season. King has provided 40 in the past three seasons. He is our best finisher. I agree that he needs to add other aspects to his game but to lose potentially double figures of goals can't be the right way to go.
Joe. Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Looks a done deal. FanhousePercy John Percy Richie Wellens has been named as #LCFC club captain for this season. #foxes
Itsthejoeker Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Fourth_Official Fourth Official Richie Wellens; new Leicester City captain #LCFC
m00nie Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I find it funny that the same people who keep saying "Let's get out of the Pearson era" are also praising the fact that Wellens is captain. If we play 4-3-3, then choose 3 midfielders; Abe King Danns Wellens Does Wellens make your XI? your missing johnson + fernandes .. does he know get in the 3?? not for me
Thracian Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Wellens captain? It's not something I'd understand. I've never been totally convinced by the guy "Player of the Season" or not. Wellens' best games have come when he cuts out the frills and gives the ball quickly. But his nature is to showboat a bit and he looked lost against Real Madrid trying that caper. Yes, lots of fans like him cos he'll roll his sleeves up and battle like a bull terrier. And, yes, he can create goals. But when it comes to shooting he abdicates responsibility and it already seems obvious we're going to need goals from midfield, especially if Andy King's double-figure contribution is going to be squandered either by his playing part-time or by his transfer to somewhere like Everton. We need to be chasing 80+ goals for the season even with a better defence and I've no idea yet where they're coming from. But I am all but sure there won't be many coming from Wellens. Especially if he finds it a battle keeping his place which seems certain if he plays like he did on Saturday. Wellens makes too many daft mistakes to make a convincing captain. Times he's caught in possession and leaves space behind him to be exploited. He's not a great tracker of the runners either and is certainly no wonderboy in the air. Kasper, on the other hand, looked a natural skipper. He was notably vociferous. clearly focused on being a winner and not the sort to accept anyone being otherwise. For me we've needed that sort of character and, barring a ridiculous dip in form I cannot imagine anyone will threaten his place.
Happy Fox Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 This element of surprise in appointing Wellens is a good thing in view, as for example if Matt Mills or Andy King wore it it would be a burden on their shoulders and they might not perform, this way it keeps them on their toes
Wherethefoxhat? Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Manager Eriksson has chosen to reward the 31-year-old with the armband on a permanent basis after two impressive seasons at the Championship club. The midfielder has established himself as a key member of the Foxes set-up since joining from Doncaster in 2009. Wellens featured in all but three of Leicester's Championship matches in his debut season, helping them to the play-offs, where they ultimately missed out to Cardiff. He was no less influential in his second term at the King Power Stadium, playing a crucial role in midfield under the reign of both Paulo Sousa and Eriksson when he took over last October. Wellens' performances earned him Leicester's player of the year award in May. Well deserved !!!!! :sge: .. . .. . .
Tielemans63 Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I'd have given it to Matty Mills - did a very good job as skipper at Reading. I'd agree that Wellens can be a bit of a show pony - maybe the captaincy will be the making of him?
accessory Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 It seems strange that the likes of Hobbs and King were preferred to Wellens as skipper in previous seasons. But there have been times where the side have looked to him, as a senior player, for leadership and he hasn't always delivered this. I'm not convinced that should we reach the Premier League, Wellens will feature in Sven's plans at that level. Mills or Schmeichel would have appeared a more logical choice for the armband. Then again, as we saw with England, Sven does of a history of making unconventional decisions regarding the captains of his teams.
ousefox Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Best central midfielder in the league. Good choice.
Bert Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I wouldn't be surprised if King gets left out a few times this season. Even Sven says he does nothing apart from score. True story.
Zingari Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 I wouldn't be surprised if King gets left out a few times this season. Even Sven says he does nothing apart from score. True story. talk about the pot calling the kettle black
Corky Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 Not convinced he is captaincy material but let's see how he does.
psychonaut Posted 1 August 2011 Posted 1 August 2011 s'all well and good for a player to be vocal on the pitch but he needs to have some sort of ability to warrant a starting place most weeks & so the captaincy. I'd rather Schmiechel got it despite being a new signing, he's vocal, commanding & a good player. LargeAl I couldn't agree more. Yes i think its unusual for the captaincy to be given to a new recruit but considering the circumstances i.e a whole new team with it realistically looking like 12 new players I dont see anything wrong with giving it to one of our new boys. Kasper S is a good call
MattyR Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 He doesn't make my starting three, when everyone is fit and firing I would have King, Danns, Johnson and Fernandes all ahead of him. Therefore, in my opinion it is not a good move!

Therefore, in my opinion it is not a good move! I dont want to question your opinion but would I be right in saying it is based off Johnsons performances for Man City in 2008 and Fernandes' performances in the 08/09 season + Switzerland?
Simmo86 Posted 2 August 2011 Posted 2 August 2011 Best central midfielder in the league. Good choice. Hahahaha! There has been some bollocks posted on this forum in recent times, but this tops it!!
