Sven alluded to the fact we need another striker, I am sure Schlupp will get some games this season

I'm not sure that looking at players' previous records tells the full story. As a young PL striker, their opportunities will almost always be restricted to sub appearances. Look at some of the players that have recently had excellent seasons last year, their games:goals ratio wasn't that impressive before they started to hit form.

Players should be bought on ability and potential rather than their statistics for previous clubs/managers/styles of play.

West Bromwich Albion striker Ishmael Miller is reportedly at Nottingham Forest this morning as he closes in on a move to the City Ground.

Rumour has it he's had a medical and is training with the squad....still, plenty of time for something apocalypticly daft to happen.

Daft being the appropriate word. Good luck with Miller, you'll probably need it.

We just need a big lump to push defenders around a bit and give the ball to D***yshire/ Findlay/ McGugan/Madjewski etc... He doesn't need to do anything too showy, like shoot on target or anything.

How has your forward line actually got worse in the last 3 years? You had about 5/6 strikers of better quality if I recollect. Do you fancy your chances now, or then?

To date we have Mcgoldraught, Tudgay, Garner, Findlay, Blackstock (hopefully towards the end of the year anyway) and now D***yshire and possibly Miller.

McGoaldraught and Tudgay are pretty awful, Garner seems to have some inner ear problems as he's rarely upright for any length of time but at least he'll run for the team and can shoot. We've not seen much of Findlay but he looks a bit like a good Tyson. Dex and the newbies are unknown as to how they'll work out, but I reckon we're better equipped this year then last. Earnie was quite literally hit and miss last year and Tyson is mostly injured and has 1 great game in 20.

Our main problem was service and Schteve sorted that out immediately with Greening and Reid.

That's a pretty aged midfield. Yes experience etc. What's the squad looking like in depth? Do you envy our squad in genuine honesty?

Sounds pretty ordinary to me ...

I genuinely think Miller is a good signing and I wish we had been a bit more interested in him. He's a big unit and you have to have that in this league.

I'm not sure you have to have 'big units' in this league or any league for that matter. particularly up front. If you retain possession this big unit become ineffectual. Spain and Arsenal aren't big units, but beat teams by ball retention, great passing and agile forwards - I think that's the way Sven wants to beat teams - as long as his defence is solid and cope with a physical presence, then Sven believes fast, mobile, creative, intelligent players can do the job.

Love where you're coming from. And I, too, would like us to play with the ball as intelligently as Arsenal and Spain. But until we have that kind of talent at our disposal throughout the team .................. !! (Although, interestingly, Chamakh is 6'2" and Bendtner is 6'5", but it is a moot point - the only objective is to score goals .. but you have to be physically strong enough to do that or very skilful).

Posted

But in this League, I think we are comparable - all the midfield are comfortable on the ball - I'm not for one minute suggesting we have the same ability as Arsenal or Spain, but suggesting that you don't need to have big units to be the best and in our league we should be looking at being the best.

No but it is allways nice having a big dirty *****r like steve howard tht is happy being a squad player and play against durty cb's like donny and pourthsmouth !

It would be a great pub debate - suspect we'd both enjoy that. Love watching Arsenal play, but have been so frustrated by their inability to dominate in the final phase of a move. Always thought Drogba would have given them something they've always lacked. ...... I'll go and get the beers in for that conversation !!

Our midfield, I reckon, is as good anyone's in the league (with the possible exception of WHU although they didn't look too clever the other day). I agree we've got some 'experience' but we sorely needed some as the rest are pretty young. The only one who looks a little of the pace so far is Reid, although his balls into the box have been quality it does seem to take him an age to deliver it.

It's probably defence where I'm most envious of yourselves. We have the four who start, Gunter, Morgan, Chambers and Cohen (great midfielder, shonky Left back), but not too much after that. Lynch and Maloney are a bit hit and miss and then it's into the Academy lads for cover.

Our forwards whilst many in number aren't too great in quality. Only really Findlay has looked up to the job so far but Schteves preferred formation doesn't help him out too much as he's quite slight and has to lead the line alone. I think, if we get Miller he's going to be able to hold up the ball better and bring in the flair mid fielders we have.

Out of interest how did you find Konchesky was for you? Plus greening is a quality signing, I've allways rated him! My point of view is that this year you could be a very hit and miss team similar to us the back end of last year, it will be a case of if you turn up in 5 th gear I can see you running riot over most teams. I feel If we get Johnson fully fit a midfield of Fernandes, king and Johnson would be formidable at this level. Anyway I think it will be ourselves and yourselves for 1&2.

Obviously when he arrived we were chuffed to bits but as the weeks went on we found that despite his heart on the sleeve approach quite often he'd be either out of position or his first touch meant his second touch was a tackle. In short he was a bit of a let down but perhaps that had more to do with our inflated expectations of him......I'd have him back though and most Forest fans would say the same (although perhaps not out loud when there's a Leicester fan in earshot ).

I reckon you're probably about right we could be hit and miss, but then historically, a lot of teams are in this league. It'll be the teams who play dogshite but always manage nick points that'll do well. Consistency is the thing and IMO if SGE doesn't tinker about too much you lot should good for a cracking season.
