Just found this on Youtube, pardon if it has been posted somewhere else, but this is Lee Peltier's goal today. Good quality video.

Exactly, there's plenty of work to do

The teamsheet and/or potential formation change shocked the fans a bit before the game as it came out of nowhere. I think Sven earmarked this as a 'grinder' so mission accomplished, will need a lot more in our locker to beat reading in our next league game

i wouldnt even bother star..... he's only bitter/jealous... Cov are doomed to, at best, mediocrity this season

On another note, Wellens' play-acting was embarrassing. Absolutely furious with him, but as I say, Baker shouldn't have been even offering the chance for Wellens to do that.

As was Keogh's....a 6ft plus defender who went down quicker than an Essex slapper. I wouldn't trust him in your relegation battle coming ahead.

How did King play?

Clever sub. Looked short of fitness but gave us an attacking edge. Often said he lacks a physical edge, he won every 50/50,

Ovbiously weren't there today, he was your worst player.

Agreed, gave Jukebox too much time. He'll be a good player Jukebox but he will never be a goalscorer.

The Bamba incident was farcical. He was palmed off in the face and then made a fantastic tackle. But the Cov fan is right, he should have gone in the book for dissent.

Jukebox should have had a yellow too for near assualt on the ref during Baker's red card.

On the back of a loss it doesn't bode well for the foreseeable either.

The one thing they can't suffer is losing the cash from ticket sales which will accompany further defeats.

Oh dear. laugh.gif

Says a lot about them at the minute that their half-time entertainment involves the easiest challenge/competition of all-time.

A season ticket for managing to hit a ball in a goal from a half-way line, a corporate package from 35 yards out.

Giving away financial lifeblood for free. Cracking marketing.

Evening all.

Good result but a disjointed and ill disciplined performance, we gave the ref loads of opportunities to flash his cards and he loved every minute of it. Bamba was seriously lucky not to join Vassell in the early bath.

Team selection surprised me though the back 5 was as expected and looked solid throughout even when Abe replaced the excellent Peltier at right back. A huge improvement on last season and considering it is an all new setup, pretty impressive.

Did not expect Fernandez to start but he was much sharper than I would have expected, Abe and Wellens got well stuck in but playing Danns either as a wide man or supporting the striker just looked wrong. Despite the individual efforts of all concerned I thought the midfield lacked a bit of shape and focus, very little in the way of creativity.

Up front Danns, as I said, looked wrong, after Vassell was gone Nugent looked decent enough but Isolated and apart from the goal I saw City create just 3 decent chances, Nugents header was a fair attempt but his attempted shot from 10 yards was poor. The final chance was made by King, who for once muffed his chance.

Still, in perspective, a good win from a virtually brand new side in a combative local Derby. Not a particularly good perforance, (cov were awful) but plenty of promise.

Anyway I'm going to have a beer and a sandwich, read through the threads and come back with some comments later....

Summed up well. Clear lack of confidence in an attacking unit early on. However, for a twenty minute period we controlled the game brilliantly. You're forgotting Fernandes chance.

3 points in a Pearson-esque performance, you can't ask for much more on opening day.

Cov's only clear-cut chance came from Mills mistake.

Fvcking awesome to see players who have been here only a matter of weeks react like that, especially in front of our away support (Danns and Mills in particular). I know it's probably just down to winning generally but a naive part of me likes to think that they know they can be part of something special and there's a good vibe around the club at the moment.

I'm not bitter. I agree, a mid-table finish is going to be a good finish for is this season.

A team that finished 17th has lost 8 players, including its 3 best, has only signed 2 goalkeepers, so yes, mediocre would be good for us.

All I'm saying is your new signings need to gel if you are to finish in the top 2. I guarantee that West Ham would have put 3 or 4 past us today.

Celebrations of the players there are brilliant! Loved it at the end when they all came and clapped us for ages! The team spirit today was amazing. Lots of shouting, lots of passion and look at how Danns and Nugent are jumping and hugging each other. Everyone looked simply overjoyed when we scored and at the final whistle which is completely different to the last couple of years. Then at the end Wellens tried to pull Bambas shorts down and Abe and Peltier jumping all over the place. Nugent didn't half put himself about today as well.

Glad to see some passion! (not bloody pashuuun)

Exactly the type of performance we need away from home, full of grit and determination. The Vassell sending-off affected things, Coventry had control of possession without testing Schmeichel too much. However, the Coventry red card was ridiculous. Why did clatter Wellens like that? Didn't need to and it allowed us to get a foothold back in the game.

Second half we got the goal, neat header from Peltier, and gradually took control of the game, playing good passing football without looking too arrogant, and restricting Coventry.

The back four was solid and held a good line, backed up well by a dominant, vocal keeper. Fernandes was very sharp, Wellens and Abe contributed well, King came on and got more involved than normal while Nugent tried hard but lacked support.

I would say that we need to keep our discipline more. Don't get involved in spats, let the ref take care of it and get on with the game. We can do without needless suspensions.

Anyway, it was an important result and we aren't playing catch up after one game.

Spot on. I was so pissed off at Baker. From where I was it looked a debatable sending-off, though I was quite a long way away from it. Either way, it was a completely needless challenge at a time where we were in control of the game. At 11 v 10 we had a chance. At 10 v 10 the team with the better players was always going to be favourite.

Incredibly annoyed at him. Even though Wellens' play acting didn't help, Baker should never have given the ref the option.

One thing that is apparent in all the photos... empty seats!! That is an appalling turnout from Cov's point of view!

couple of pics of the empty stands......

Anybody know if there's an agreed fee for Fernandes if we want to keep him?

Seem to remember talk of him being out of contract, available to sign on a free at one point, before he joined on loan. Anything in that?

Just the type of win you need to get if you're going to be winning the league as we are aspiring to do. As many others have said, I don't think Vassell's challenge was malicious, the ball was there to be won but he simply mistimed things a little. The encouraging thing for me was that even playing 11 vs 10 we still held our own and managed to knock it around nicely, our shape defensively was excellent which is great to see after costly poor defending at times last season.

After the sides had been evened up there was only going to be one winner really, I think it picked us up atmosphere-wise as things went a bit quiet after the Vassell red and we weren't having to move as much to keep our shapes which would have been difficult to maintain for 90 minutes in that heat. There was one spell of passing in the second half in particular that had us all cheering every pass and Cov couldn't get near the ball.

As for individual performances, Fernandes was a beast. I think he's just what we've been missing and allowed Wellens to get on the ball and not worry about the gritty stuff as much, and when he can do that and dictate play he's got the vision and passing to pretty much make the ball his own. I've not always been Wellens' biggest fan but when the incentive's there for him he seems to shine, I'm thinking last season when he was pushing for a new contract and hopefully now that there's more competition he'll be determined to stay on top of his game. I think he's important to us because of his nous as well, such as towards the end where he instigated us keeping the ball down in the corner without giving away a free kick or throw, and he can buy free kicks like no player I've ever seen!

Abe put in a shift as he always does, Konchesky looked good and Bamba did what Bamba does, absolutely mountainous again. I know some think what he does is risky but it has to be admired, some of the best centre backs in the world don't have the audacity and ability to bring it out like he does. If you stifled him by asking him to stop doing that I doubt he'd be as confident and assured in the other aspects of his game as he is, it just requires someone else from the midfield to be aware enough that when he goes on his forays they drop in to cover him.

To the other centre half, of course I would never write a player off from just two appearances but I think some are getting a little carried away with Mills because of the price tag. Yes he sticks his head in where it hurts and seems committed but for me the jury's very much still out. If you were to ask me which of our two centre halves were the £5million man today or vs Madrid I would have gone for Sol every time, hopefully once he's settled we'll see a bit more from him though.

I thought the support was good, as it always is. People moan about our lack of originality or whatever with the Poznan or chants but not many clubs consistently take the numbers away that we do. The noise at the end was top notch, a real feeling of togetherness with the players already. You only have to look at the terrible show on the part of Cov fans to see how good we really are. It must be difficult when they're picking those seats at random for the half-time giveaway not to strike on an empty one every time! Anyway an encouraging start, here's to a great season

Pessimistic about the season ahead or not, less than 15,000 home fans for their opening game of the season is a terrible attendance. Against a local rival that is spending some serious cash and thus leaving themselves open for potential embarrassment, it is nothing short of an embarrassment.

If they can't get 20,000 home fans through the gates for a game like that, I would seriously worry for the club's future. With the average away following being but a fraction of the 6500 we took, they are going to get some shocking attendances. A Tuesday night against Blackpool in September is on their fixture list and if they're doing badly, it wouldn't be a massive shock to see them scrape five figures at all. According to Four Four Two's pre-season guide, they've only sold 7000 season tickets which has to be a concern.

Even if they had been down to 10 men and played with one man less for almost an entire half?

Besides, West Ham were able to hold on to their core players, we had to replace about 40% in a massive summer overhaul.
