One thing that is apparent in all the photos... empty seats!! That is an appalling turnout from Cov's point of view!

On the back of a loss it doesn't bode well for the foreseeable either.

The one thing they can't suffer is losing the cash from ticket sales which will accompany further defeats.

Oh dear. laugh.gif

One thing I noted today, which many people on here will love, was the passion shown by the players! Especially after the goal - was brilliant to see!

We were the 12th man today, and it looked like the players really appreciated it, they all look like there playing for the fans and the club

I can't believe some people saying that it shows we need a striker, 1-0 aint good enough against a team like coventry etc etc etc. We won that's all that matters and it was the first game of the season with 7 new signings on the pitch. We can't expect miracles instantly. We won and that's all that matters. We need to expect a few nervous performances and scraped wins along the way. Not like today was even a scraped win or a nervous performance. We held our own well in the 1st when down to 10. sounded like we were a little nervy but that's ok it's the forst half of the season. 2nd half sound like we controlled the game. Sure we only got 1 but that's all we needed. The goals will come once the team plays with each other more.

Good start, especially against our main rivals.

Cov City... Main rivals... Not for me they're not...

Closest in terms of geography thats all, but oceans away in terms of ambition, squad, attitude, supporters. I would suggest bigger rivals would be Sheffield, Reading, West Ham

My summary of today:

1. Kasper looks rock-solid... the bollockings he gives the defence are very amusing. He seems to ooze confidence which is in marked contrast with Weale.

2. The defence look far more organised and I think that having the experience of Konchesky is gonna help here

3. The midfield were superb today IMO. Wellens ran the game, Abe and Fernandes got their toe in time and time again to break-up the Cov attacks

4. Im not sure where Danns was playing? Was he just off Nugent, or on the wing?

5. Nugent, despite putting-in soooo much effort, again looked very isolated, especially in the first half. I'm not knocking him at all, but if Sven wants to persist with having one up top, this needs to be a player who can effectively make goals for himself... ie. someone who can beat the defender and slot it home.. I like Nugent but I'm not sure that he's gonna do this consistently enough.

All in all, a very solid performance..they very rarely threatened us and Danns could have toed-in a couple if he were just a yard quicker.

Good start :appl:

Don't think Danns or Sven knows, R5 seemed to be saying he was a square peg in the round hole, but they also said the game completely passed Abe by & a few people on here seemed to think he was quite effective so I :dunno:

Wellens' play & indeed assist were the difference with Fernandes sureing things up like we missed so much all last season.

We did leave Nugent isolated, probably at the expense of Sven wanting to keep things tight, which was probably why there was no room in the starting line-up for King & Gally,

going to be equally tough against Reading though, but for different reasons, shame Pelts is going to be missing as they're going to be very quick on the counter & their defence will almost certainly prove more of a challenge than Covs. Onwards & upwards :scarf:

Just seen both tackles again. Both sendings off.

Annoys me how players pretend to hold cards to the refs though. Coventrys young black lad and its clear for all to see on the picture special on the official site.

Evening all.

Good result but a disjointed and ill disciplined performance, we gave the ref loads of opportunities to flash his cards and he loved every minute of it. Bamba was seriously lucky not to join Vassell in the early bath.

Team selection surprised me though the back 5 was as expected and looked solid throughout even when Abe replaced the excellent Peltier at right back. A huge improvement on last season and considering it is an all new setup, pretty impressive.

Did not expect Fernandez to start but he was much sharper than I would have expected, Abe and Wellens got well stuck in but playing Danns either as a wide man or supporting the striker just looked wrong. Despite the individual efforts of all concerned I thought the midfield lacked a bit of shape and focus, very little in the way of creativity.

Up front Danns, as I said, looked wrong, after Vassell was gone Nugent looked decent enough but Isolated and apart from the goal I saw City create just 3 decent chances, Nugents header was a fair attempt but his attempted shot from 10 yards was poor. The final chance was made by King, who for once muffed his chance.

Still, in perspective, a good win from a virtually brand new side in a combative local Derby. Not a particularly good perforance, (cov were awful) but plenty of promise.

Anyway I'm going to have a beer and a sandwich, read through the threads and come back with some comments later....

Gelson Fernandes really impressed me today, he stifled the opposition, and performed remarkably well, the ref and the linesman had a shocker hopefully in the coming weeks we have better officiating, throughly enjoyed the game as a whole, atmosphere was really good, great goal by Peltier, great start to the season

spot on happy fox

funny how people percieve football so differently... for me this was Abe's best performance in a city shirt.. His distribution was crisp and clean, he gave nothing away and he was snapping at their heels all the time. He simply did the job he was meant to do very well today

These cov fans on here :crylaugh: " id suggest play offs is a reasonable expectation for you"! having just watched their so called frontline restricted to a couple of 25 yarders in front of a measly 14000 home fans, id suggest 9 months in a nut house is a reasonable expectation for them.

Very happy to have left with all three points, had Nugent been a bit luckier, Danns made a connection and King and Fernandes been a little more accurate and powerful in the shot, it would have been a bigger margin.

You have to admire the way that their supporters choose at 1-0 down to sing songs about Leicester for ten minutes, then break out into a chorus with an opening line that sounds like "while we sleep together" and they call us inbreds?

What a giveaway at half time though! score a penalty and win a season ticket! next week, score a penalty and win an entire block of empty fooking seats.

Great win today after a bad start with Vas getting sent off. Probably was a red card but the manner that the ref gave cards was what annoyed me most, gave no time to think about his decisions and in truth was probably why got the Cov player got a straight red (ref got caught up in the situation and if the boot was on the other foot we'd consider the straight red harsh) - HOWEVER I HAVEN'T SEEN IT BACK SO DON'T HOLD ME TO THAT OPINION - JUST BASED ON SEEING IT IN THE STADIUM

Fernandes looked quality, him and Wellens controlled/organised on the pitch and everyone seemed to know what their role was when our backs were up against the wall after Vassell's red. Nugent worked so hard up top on his own and WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR WINNING THE FREEKICK WHICH WE SCORED FROM. Unlucky with the header in the first half too.

We look a lot more likely to be able to battle, however i can see Millsy/Bamba getting in trouble with refs for the way they protest...quite aggressive and while it's great to see from the stands some refs will take exception to it!!!

No, they call us "interbreds", which is actually a good thing. Interbreeding is the opposite of inbreeding. Leicester is famously a very culturally diverse city, so it might well be one of the deepest gene pool populations in the continent, if not the world. That is factually accurate and complimentary. Either the Chavs don't understand that songs about local rivals are supposed to be insulting, or they think inbreeding, rather than interbreeding, is a good thing. Explains a lot. They are a confused lot, are our nearest neighbours down the M69.

@realmattmills5

Millsy

Poznan ledge get everyone on it :-)

looks like we have to if the captain says so.

Yes Matt Mills!!

Failed before kick off but we made up for it when we scored. WOW.

This performance was rarely seen last season, grinding was the word to describe it, our defense was immense, away from home this will lead to many more clean sheets, Sven identified the area and solved it,

Very pleased with today. First and foremost, 3 points and our first win at the Ricoh in the bag.

Not only that, but a decent performance in general. I might have been shitting myself for the last 10 minutes, but the defence was solid and Cov never really looked like breaking us down.

Mills and Bamba seemed to be forming a tight partnership, Konchesky has shown his pedigree and Peltier seems to be a smart, sensible full back who does get forward on occasion.

Wasn't too big on Wellens and Abe today but Fernandes was outstanding and was the big boss man in midfield, winning the ball and using it very smartly.

Up front we were lacking a bit of venom and didn't create too much, but that was for the most part down to Vassell getting sent off. Nugent became isolated at times but he did well, made a nuisance of himself and was inches from scoring.

Bearing in mind this is the first game of the season and we are yet to strengthen up top, I think we should all be really pleased with today.

Our performance today reminded me a lot of the way QPR played against us last season. Hard to break down, scored and then got men behind the ball putting in a real professional and drilled display. One of the things that really impressed me was that we now look like we can mix it with the best of them in terms of playing dirty and being aggressive, which for me was one of the key reasons we struggled at times last season allowing our lightweight midfield to be bossed by other teams. I really can't see that happening this season, and think it may be us bossing other teams. I was also impressed with the gamesmanship towards the end allowing the clock to tick down. This is something other teams have done to us for years, yet we've always been the nice guys, and often been punished for it. Well done lads, you did us proud today!

Ah, so they were singing "interbred, leicester scum", I thought it was "your all inbred, leicester scum"

Just another thing they've ballsed up today then.

You're forgetting though mate that we're favourites to go down bottom of the league. I've been going 10 years and your performance, if I'm honest, felt like the performance of a side pushing for the play-offs. If you think performances like that all season will see you into the premiership then quite frankly you are deluded. Your players probably haven't gelled yet. If they do, then I wouldn't be surprised if you get into the top 2.

As for the 'interbred' song. It's the most embarrassing song I've ever heard at a football game. Hilarious misuse of the word interbred, and it doesn't even make sense. "your mum's your dad" for example.

And as for the attendance, I think it's a sign that the club is dying. Slowly but surely, our owners are killing us. No ambition, no signings, and quite frankly I'm surprised that anyone still shows up.

Exactly, there's plenty of work to do

The teamsheet and/or potential formation change shocked the fans a bit before the game as it came out of nowhere. I think Sven earmarked this as a 'grinder' so mission accomplished, will need a lot more in our locker to beat reading in our next league game
