Waghorn - where to?

How right you are. Adkins has earned 100 points for Saints faster than any other manager, so I was told this morning and, what's more he seems to have done it by attacking at every opportunity rather than just to the point where they think they'll cling on.

Southampton.this season have scored 13 times in four matches and last season notched 86 goals with just 38 conceded which suggests they have a finely balanced team. They have an outstanding record of youth development to full first team level and that looks set to continue.

Waghorn has not improved one iota since he came here, in fact he's gone backwards. Okay he's lacked for regular opportunities and has wasted a good many chances that he's been given.

But when you look at the things we've done with him - playing him on both the right wing and left wing on occasions, you do have to wonder if we have the slightest idea what we're doing.

Cos that's the sort of thing you might do in emergency with a player who's full of confidence or as a long-term conversion exercise with a player who's noted for his adaptability.

Not with a centre-forward who looks like he'd be struggling to score from 30 yards into an empty net right now. Even watching him shooting in before matches is an embarrassment, and he's not the only one.

Wherever he goes, Waghorn needs to play where he belongs for a while, as an out and out striker.

He needs to work on his shooting technique, his right foot, his movement in the bos and on his mental state of mind when he does get a chance to score. He needs to work on his first touch, the consistency of his passing and the pacing of his game so that he doesn't burn all his energy on lost causes.

I've not noticed any improvements along these lines since he signed for Leicester and if I were the owners I'd want to know why.

The good news for Waghorn is that I've seen strikers with less than Waghorn's ability do well enough with the right guidance. He's still young, doesn't strike me as the sort of guy who won't listen so who's taking responsibility for him?

He might still fail to make it but if our people can't turn him into a better player than he is now then I don't know who they're likely to improve.

Any club can buy ready-made players but it takes special people to improve every player who comes under their charge.

.

Yes, special magic fairy people, who live in unicorn land under the 2 suns of Aromath.

Another dig at Sven I see. I suppose you'll be using the argument of 'look what O'Neill did, look what Pearson did..' I like to think that some players are like some educational students. Some students can read all the books they can, be able to spout verbatim what they can remember, but the actual application of that knowledge in real terms sometimes isn't present nor will ever be.

Are you saying Sven who is greatly interested in youth players and the development of, can't turn water into wine, by getting the best out of an average player who only has the capacity to be above average if pushed, and only wants players who can reach higher expectations and capabilities, by buying them in?

Is he really failing Waggy? Or is Waggy failing him, as Waggy can't produce, and will never produce the exceptional talent that Sven needs to see in a player to reach the Prem and stay there? He can only work with what's there. If Waggy can turn things around and maybe do so on loan, and come back a different player, then that's wonderful, but as he's not already been put out on loan, i can't see it happening.

Nigel Adkins took Gary Hooper, Billy Sharp, Andy Keogh plus others while he was manager of Scunthorpe and turned them into decent strikers, he and his coaching staff had a nack of spotting potential and on the whole improving players. I believe Southampton would be a good move for Martin Waghorn as he would receive the coaching and encouragement he needs to bring out his potential. Personally I would have loved to have had Nigel Adkins as LCFC's manager.

Not a massive list to compare him to the likes of Dario Gradi or Fergusen yet <_< am certain a majority of managers in THIS league have the honour of turning at least three players into decent players during their career...

Southampton have got off to a good start, Adkins is a fairly competant manager but stop licking his balls like he'll turn Waghorn into a world beater

And am sure Sven has churned out a few quality players in his time at the likes of Benfica, Lazio, Roma (etc etc) let alone at Scunthorpe in league one

Name ONE player from Nigel Pearson's time who has improved under Sven?

Paul Gallagher without question. He was pretty poor under Pearson but last season he was one of our best players and Sven seemed to get the best out of him. He's started the season like an absolute chodball though, likewise Andy King.

Waghorn's a classic fans' favourite player.

Works his legs off and can kick it hard.

In reality, he has a poor first touch and lacks composure. Some sort of Fryatt/Waghorn hybrid would be a hell of a footballer.

If we sell him and get 1.5m for him then that could go towards Maynard or who ever were getting I like waggy but he's not in svens plans so thats fair enough but where ever he's going he will do well that's nailed on like most that leave,

Conrad Logan.

Last time I saw him he got scared cos Somen Tchoyi was running towards him-dropped the ball and Tchoyi scored. Now he's on loan at Rotherham. He much better off there.

Goodbye Waggy,

Sven just said on Radio Leicester that Waggy wants to leave and it looking for another club. All the best to you. :appl:

Waghorn will be a great player for someone and he clearly showed his commitment to LCFC by fighting for his place during the last 10 months or so.

I hope the foxes fans will wish him all the best of luck finding a good club and to have a successful career. I know I do.

Questionable people management skills from Sven. This painful waghorn saga, with all it's rumours etc could've been better handled. Wasted potential.

What did you expect him to do? He doesn't rate him clearly, but gave him opportunities which Waggy never really grabbed. He didn't badmouth him or exclude him or try and force him out - players are surplus sometimes, it happens

Does anybody else feel a little sorry for Waghorn? I really do believe he thought he might be onto something good when signing for LCFC. I sort of feel like the club has let him down.

how? by playing him and him not producing?

Yeh so deal with it quickly, quietly and professionally and be honest with the player. As for opportunities, they were very limited and virtually always out of position. This, the fryatt saga and the Hobbs saga were all left to fester far too long.

I get your point but Sven's never shied away from giving him a runout and his touch has let him down when he come on, though nice free kick against Rotherham.

You could guess that Andew Neville and Sven have someone lined up to come in or you could say its just the way it is. There's loads of players over the years that I've thought it was lunacy to sell but that's life.

He seems like a decent lad, I hope he finds his feet somewhere.

I feel sorry for the guy.

But more importantly, why on earth are we letting him go when we're already thin on the ground up top?

Waghorn was nowhere near the finished article and with Schlupp - a player with more all-round ability hopefully coming through - plus a new striker being lined up , there was just no chance of Waghorn making progress here. However, Waghorn's departure does suggest that Sven might keep Schlupp involved here instead of sending him out on loan and I'd hope that's the case. There's the added bonus of him being able to play left-back so it makes sense.

When we buy young players, surely the aim if the club is that they should leave us as better players. I don't think Waghorn and to an extent Hobbs have and this reflects badly (in part at least) on the coaching and man management of these two players.
