England

Now I know we got 3 points today against Wales and did the job but did anyone else find them to be so uninspiring to watch? In truth I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed watching England play.

I know it sounds like a rant but I just want to find out what everyone elses opinions are of our national team.

We're ridiculously overated

This is so true, we lack any character about our squad.. I was debating whether to watch the game tonight but thought it might actually surprise me........ It really didn't.

They are the same as yours and have been for years and probably will be in years to come. Revolution is needed and it will never happen.

Just out of curiosity... Do you play down goals on Thursdays?

I have no idea what that means.

It just seemed like a very half arsed performance, no cohesion, energy or team bond. Don't think Barry smiled once we scored. We have a manager who clearly isn't on the same wavelength when it comes to tactics with our players. That and our awful Wembley crowd, yes they pay good money but it's just so quiet, It can't help the players at all.

The 5-a-side Football establishment in Evington... There's a team down there called Purple Ronnies and wondered if you played for them!

I've been to see England twice and I've got to say I feel for the people who paid and gave their time to watch that.

Plus those bleeding trumpets doing Great Escape was nearly enough for me to back Wales tonight.

Yes. I always find England hard to watch. Especially yesterday because we had two holding midfielders (Milner, Barry) and one up front. Didn't see why Parker needed dropping though.

We are overrated but Wales looked underrated! What are they in the rankings? 114th? lol They played well, thought Ramsey was excellent.

No but it's nice to know I'm an inspiration.

England under Sven were rarely ever dull to watch, we played some superb football but seemed to come unstuck with some negative tactics and lack of ideas when it really mattered in the closing stages of tournaments. Likewise under Hoddle and Venables. We are however a disgrace at the minute, just as we were under McClaren and Keegan. Once the manager has lost it, this team falls apart and has no ability to turn it around.

This will be it until Capello goes and then maybe we can build on something under someone else.

I was reading an article how the Golden Generation were massively over-rated but i'd do anything to see Beckham, Owen, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard and Ferdinand in their peak for England right now. It's a sorry state of affairs.

Wilshere is badly missed apart from Rooney he is our most technically gifted player, the rest seem lost.

I suggest, seriously, you go and see a dementia counsellor. Your memory is letting you down big-time. :o

There are at least a dozen shockers I can recall off the top of my head. The games vs Sweden and Nigeria at the 02 World Cup, the ones against Paraguay, Trinidad/Tobago, Ecuador and Portugal in 06, plus the home and away games with Liechtenstein all spring readily to mind.

Sven's style could best be described as functional. At times, his sides could make Gary Megson look like Pep Guardiola. But most fans didn't care as long as we kept on winning.

Owen (when fit) and Scholes were genuine world-class players, who earned the respect of their contemporaries - the rest were massively over-rated. Sven's failure to stand up to the Beckhams and other egos in the squad helped to create the issues that Capello is still trying to deal with

The Gazzetta Dello Sport's London correspondent recently retired after working in England for over 30 years. He named Kevin Keegan, Gary Lineker, Peter Shilton, Scholes and Wayne Rooney as the best English players he'd seen. Significantly, there was no mention of Beckham, Gazza or Alan Shearer.

We looked really good in Euro 2004, scored plenty of goals and should've gone further.

Apart from that, the other tournaments we've looked tired and lacklustre in the main.

This.

We have a system that supports uneducated baffoons on sunday league pitches barking at kids in the first stages of the years playing the sport to "get the ball up to the big man" and so forth.

Go and watch an under 11's match one time if any are near you, check out some of the things you hear the parents shouting.

Brilliant point.

He takes a huge part of responsibility for the WAG culture when you look back at it that we ended up with.

I think it's safe to say that because of the football culture in England, many people, including myself, prefer club to country. Although I'll always support England, I'm far more in to Leicester. The Club/Country issue is different wherever you come from. I live in Denmark now and was watching their game against Norway yesterday with my mates, and I can safely say that many of the Danish fans are far more passionate about their country than their club. A lot of Danes even started to treat FC Copenhagen's CL games last season as if Denmark were playing. Basically, they just want to see a good advert for Danish football. I'd like to hear if shen agrees with me here

EDIT: Didn't read other posts before I wrote this, so I'm sorry that it has nothing to do with other posts :)

Were the players at Sven's disposal really a 'golden generation?' That tag irks me, in my opinion, it was Venables who had the most talented bunch to play with.

Seaman

Neville-----Adams-----Southgate-----Pearce

Anderton----Ince----Gascoigne-----McManaman

Sheringham-----Shearer

That's the side that beat Holland in Euro '96. A spine of Seaman, Adams, Gascoigne and Shearer.

The mix up that Capello should've made after the World Cup is now surely glaringly obvious. Players like Welbeck, Cleverley, Jones and Smalling shouldn't be Plan B, in the squad due to injury or withdrawals, but they should be starting games for England. Germany have always integrated new players with old so much better than we have. In 2006, Lahm and Schweinsteiger were good, talented players. Now they're exceptional players. Now the likes of Hummels, Goetze, Kroos and Howedes are breaking in, mixing with players that aren't necessarily old, but still have plenty of experience (Neuer, Muller, Ozil). They look like the only side (apart from Holland, perhaps) that seem capable of challenging Spain next summer. Come 2014 the talents Low is blooding now will be on a different planet, they'll have had the experience, one that Capello seems so reluctant to give our youth, instead relying on players that've failed time and time again.

We need to take a German style approach, and start building a team around youth, so we can have a side that'll make us proud. Terry, Lampard, Barry, Crouch etc, should be nothing more than a bad memory for England fans if Capello does the right thing.

He won't, though.
