21st Century Fox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 No because a black person might be massively offended by it. Gay people, chilled out, normal gay people with a sense of humour, don't get offended by 'faggot' and don't care for it's original meaning. And back on the subject of the word 'nigger' - how many black people call each other that? Plenty. But do they get offended by each other? No, because it's in a friendly, banter context. Now, if everyone took that word light-heartedly, no matter who said it, like the majority do 'faggot', it wouldn't be offensive at all. They're just words and therefore context is important. Banter is banter, hate is hate. The intentions behind the words are so much more significant than the actual words. I get your point but why is it any different to chanting something like "You're from a town full of niggers"? Context or not thats as bad as when other fans chants link Leicester and 'Paki' Based solely on the fact you're assuming not many people know how vitriolic the word faggot actually is. I've never researched or looked up that word but I know gay people who find it sickening. I guess its personal preference, I steer clear of that word because I know how upsetting it is to alot of people.
I am Rod Hull Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Football league show on now... We`re the main game... Night night.... love ya, love ya...
He's not bald Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 This whole thread is bloody ridiculous..how many people do you think are injured, lying in hospital, considering ending it all, have gone into hiding or are even actually upset as a result of anything that's been said at the KP today? Well I'll tell you...it's just me, my mate called me a FB just I've put on a few pounds since he last saw me (been in tears through "X factor" and most of "live at the apollo", could'nt finish my doner and chips!)
BoneDog Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Off topic but I'm shocked and want to share. I've just been looking at the League 1 (old division 2) table from the 1999/2000 season and found out that Blackpool and Cardiff were relegated into the fourth tier that season.

I guess its personal preference, I steer clear of that word because I know how upsetting it is to alot of people. The word faggot is not vitriolic. It used to be vitriolic. The word does not have the same meaning anymore. I can't feel bad everytime I offend someone I'm afraid. I know what's acceptable and what's not, and that's enough. Calling people niggers in public isn't, especially strangers, and especially when I'm saying it in a hateful context. Those things certainly do make a difference. Chanting racist chants is out of order also, as far more people are likely to be offended than the chants today. I don't go round gay-bashing and calling gay people dirty faggots either, that would also be unacceptable. The chants today were harmless - they were meant in a light-hearted, non-hateful way, and happen to them everywhere, they find it funny, they aren't offended in general, and In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if not one of those away fans were gay!
BoneDog Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 We're on the tele. Oh my gosh, what a run and leap from Yuki Abe! Lovely goal.
MC Prussian Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Cracked me up no end seeing that look on Yuki's face after scoring a header. It's something of a Japanese mix between utter surprise and happiness.
BoneDog Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Yep that look has also given me a good buzz for the rest of the night. Yuki and the rest of the lads.
The Doctor Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I'm not that bothered about it, but it's just a little bit... shit and unimaginative is it not?

I'm not personally having a go at you, I just find it strange that people use words they know are offensive or have the potential to offend others but don't know what they mean. I don't understand how you differentiate the offence caused by a racist word and a homophobic word. Personally I think its a cheap pay off to keep those words in circulation just so some people have enough insults in their banter arsenal. I'm sure alot of fans think its banter when they call Spurs fans 'Yids' but alot of Jewish people still find it offensive no matter how outdated the word maybe. Like I said personal preference I guess.
Libertine Dream Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Im not too bothered about for the shear fact its highly unimaginative and predictable. Why can't we come up with our own things and not jump on a bandwagon. Annoyed at most of the people around me in K now. I also couldn't care less because after reading the Brighton forums tonight they have clearly shown thry are worse fans than Brizzle fans, another small time club thinking theyre big because theyve had some decent results and a new ground.

Me too There was some guy behind me who kept shouting every now and again "stop sucking cock" at the Brighton fans, made me laugh how unfunny it was.
acooling08 Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 If you don't like the songs/abuse/banter or whatever you want to call it, then don't join in. Simple.
melrose Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 It`s a good job some of you guys were not going down the city in the 70`s and 80`s. This
Koke Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 Those who are OK with this are probably the same people who are OK with giving female lines-women abuse purely because of her gender. I remember we had a female lino a few years ago and old fella behind me kept making references to her gender every time she made an unpopular decision. Its disgusting and people who try to normalise nonsense like this by calling it "banter" should hang their head in shame.

BoneDog Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 I'm not that bothered about it, but it's just a little bit... shit and unimaginative is it not? I agree. My chant is so much more original and detailed. Creates a picture. And it might also make some people think about 'rubbering up', which can only be a good thing in the long run.

I feel we should have done something in German - schwanzlutscher fits perfectly into a chant does it not? (I might need to explain - schwanzlutscher is German for cocksucker)

Brainy Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 Perhaps the people who sung that today are the ones that arent fussed about the paki chants.

Like I said personal preference I guess. Spurs fans chant "Jermaine Defoe he's a yido" and refer to themselves as Yiddos so i can't agree here sorry, With regards to the 'banter' i think racism / homophobia comes down to context and how it's received. eg "fvcking faggott scum bags" and "you dirty gay b@stards" are hateful, racist / homophobic, and have no place in football grounds or anywhere else for that matter, "Shut up you poofter" isn't in my eyes out of order and i honestly don't know any gay people who would be offended.

So because a few spurs fans chant yiddos it's no longer offensive to Jews?
Tommeh Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 God created Adam and Eve. He didn't create Adam and Steve.

On a side note there is an old SS Officer living down my street and when I pass him I always nod and say one of my three German phrases.
