Happy Fox Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Doncaster-move-for-Wrexham-manager-Dean-Saunders-and-place-Sean-O-Driscoll-on-gardening-leave-article802890.html Dean Saunders is set to become the new boss of Doncaster Rovers in a shock managerial coup. Rovers are bottom of the Championship with just a single point from seven matches. Saunders is poised to replace the long-serving Sean O'Driscoll, who will go on gardening leave. Welshman Saunders can quit Wrexham, currently joint top of the Conference, because of an agreement with his chairman. Saunders wants a crack at working in the Football League - and Doncaster will not be a daunting task after his time at cash-strapped Wrexham. Rovers have stayed loyal to O'Driscoll after a poor run of results which started midway through last season, but have now run out of patience. Saunders should be at the club on Friday for the first time and will be in charge for the home game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Happy Fox Posted 23 September 2011 Author Posted 23 September 2011 http://www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk/page/News/0,,10329~2459949,00.html? It is with regret that the shareholders of Doncaster Rovers FC have taken the decision based on the long run of poor results, that Sean O'Driscoll and Richard O'Kelly have been relinquished of their duties. They felt that action needed to be taken to address the current position. They would like to thank Sean and Richard for all their work during the five years at the club including winning at the Millennium Stadium and Wembley. Dean Saunders will take charge of the game on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
Simmo86 Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 Shocking decision. Worked miracles to get them where they are, and they drop him at the first sign of it going wrong. I'm sure he could of left them on numerous occasions but showed some loyalty! Pity this wasn't reciprocated
Guest Bilo Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 Bizarre decision, Saunders will take time he doesn't have to adapt to a much higher level. Sean O'Driscoll has worked wonders there as well, and in my view has had some bad luck this season with Billy Sharp being injured on the first day. Put it this way, I can see him doing better in the long-term than Doncaster.
Fox92 Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 Ryan doing this really, he only backed his the other day. Stupid. O 'Driscoll has done very, very, very well getting Doncaster to where they are now - on a limited budget. That limited that Billy Sharpe is their biggest buy ever I think. Plus, they always loose their top players to bigger clubs who have the money; we've got two of them: Wellens and Mills. I think he is a fairly good manager and this is a shock for me.

Same he is a very good manager, who has worked wonders at that club, very shabby decision in my view, should have gave him longer time to turn it around.
ScouseFox Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 In all fairness they were shite last season and evidently the start of this has shown no signs of improvement, so a change is what the board feel necessary. Decent manager though, he'll get another Championship job without any problems.
Bayfox Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 Worked wonders at that club, watch them slip back into the bottom tier in the next few years.

Decent manager though, he'll get another Championship job without any problems. They may have been shite but they are already punching above their weight and this is largely due to the shrewdness of the manager. He has a great eye for a player and is an excellent coach. Plays an excellent passing game which will always increase the sell on value of players. He had barely any money and I am sure he turned down more lucrative jobs elsewhere. I think he will be back at a much bigger club then doncaster - in fact if anything happens to Sven (which I hope it doesn't) I think we could do a lot worse then get him ourselves.
Webbo Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 I don't care who your manager is, if you've only got 1 point after 7 games you're in trouble.IIrc Sousa had more points than that this time last year and nobody misses him.

These two cases are completely different. O'Driscoll had a history of doing well within that club. He made such an impact that other chairmen wanted to poach him. Most decisions that Sousa made from the START of his tenure were poor ones. To me it is more like Blackpool sacking Holloway for them getting relegated when in actual fact he would have had to go way over and above the odds to achieve anything other then this.

I think O' Driscoll turned down the Sheffield United job as well to stay at Doncaster. I know they have only won 3 games this year (not season), but he has no money and often manages to make good Championship players. I said last season, after Sousa was sacked, that we could look at O' Driscoll.
RowlattsFox Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 I could see this coming, think o'driscoll has ran his course at donny and sometimes both manager and club need a fresh start. They will probably still go down, o'driscoll would have probably left at end of the season anyway.
Fox92 Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 He might end up returning to Bouremouth if their results don't improve. He is held in very high regard at Bournemouth as he played 423 times for them, and also managed them before Doncaster.
Father Ted Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 Ridiculous decision, espescially considering that their downfall towards the end of last season and at the beginning of this season is purely down to crazy bad luck regarding injuries. I'm pretty sure they've had 11 or so players out at one stage.
Head Honcho Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 Seem to remember a few muppets on this forum calling for him to be appointed our manager An average L1 manager and he'll be back in a job soon, at that level, good luck to him.
dave_the_fox Posted 23 September 2011 Posted 23 September 2011 It's a shame Billy sharp broke his leg- he would have kept him in a job...
Fox92 Posted 24 September 2011 Posted 24 September 2011 Seem to remember a few muppets on this forum calling for him to be appointed our manager Yes, I was one of them. Remember, he took Doncaster from nowhere to a Championsip team with no money. They loose their best player's every year and Doncaster staying up for the last few seasons has been a good achievement for them. If he had money I think he's be a great manager. Look at Adkins, no money at Scunthorpe, lower end of the table. He then moved to Southampton where has has the money, and they are near the top end of the league.
Number 6 Posted 24 September 2011 Posted 24 September 2011 Great manager, at their current state he was the only positive left. Seems they have been awfully unlucky with injuries too. I expect he'll go on to bigger and better things, as for Doncaster, I expect they'll be League 1 next year.
SuperScout Posted 24 September 2011 Posted 24 September 2011 The guys been on form with Wrexham this season to be fair, it is a massive leapfrog though from the Conference to the Championship, I'm sure John Ryan wouldn't have appointed him if he didn't feel he could get them out this mess. I'd have gone for someone like Chris Powell or Jim Bentley personally. As for the sacking of Sean O'Driscoll, the guys done a fantastic job there but relegation is not good enough for any Club.
Happy Fox Posted 28 September 2011 Author Posted 28 September 2011 They have signed Pascal Chimbonda, and were close to signing El Hadj Diouf, managed to get a point yesterday.
