Wellens

King looked absolutely quality today because people were noticing his little runs enabling him to provide so much more. With Wellens in the team this doesn't happen because as i've said before he wants to hold onto the ball too long whilst he decides what to do and every chance of quick passing football goes out the window. It just ends up with a pointless hollywood ball.

The problem with Wellens is that he's such a pivotal character he dictates the tempo of our side and seems to inhibit others.

King's been pushed out of his best position but all our other midfielders have found it hard to settle into a role as well. With King as the fulcrum everything seems much more inclusive.

If players make themselves available they know they'll get an instant pass from King.

Wellens means well and tries hard but he'll often ignore the quick and easy pass in favour of something more elaborate and chancey.

Fine if it comes off but frustrating if it doesn't and you're the guy whose given him a simple option.

Another thing is that Wellens is not a natural pass and run player. The long ball makes life easier for him because to pass and move is exhausting. But we had so many one-twos at times today and players will keep making those little runs if the ball comes.

Still has a place in the team, but rightly dropped on form and needs to work hard to regain his place.

He was dropped because he was injured ....

I"m glad people are seeing that he misses the early ball and ends up going hollywood instead ....we're less of a team with him in it because of this.

Hopefully he get's dropped permanently and throws a paddy so he can go back to mediocrity in league 1 or whatever he was doing a few seasons ago.

No need for that attitude. Wellens might have his faults but sometimes over the years he's been one of the few standing up to be counted. He's still capable when he plays the ball quickly and will undoubtedly continue to feature and do his stint. Yesterday was about yesterday's team and performance. There's Wellens getting stick but little being said about Beckford's absence.

Typical nonsense.. It's a squad game you muppet and we need wellens in the squad as much as we do king and all the others.

It did work yesterday, but Derby were freakin awful & hardly put a tackle in, even when they 'improved fracruinally around 50 to 70min mark, not many (if any) teams will allow us such luxury for rest of season.

Fernandes & Danns are zipping around with pace & it's that pace that Derby couldn't live with, however Danns lost the ball far, far more than he should & any team with an ounce of effort would have punished us a lot more than that lot.

Wellens has had many, many great games for us, Danns has 1 good one against an appalling team who didn't tackle (& he still lost possession lots) & all of a sudden Wellens needs to gtfo, really?

Wellens might of had many great games for us, but none of them have been this season!

Hopefully this will signal a spell on the sidelines for Richie, but however much I dislike him he still has a role to play this year

Exactly.. They all have haven't they....

For people to be shouting wellens needs to go back to league one 'where he belongs' is not only disrespectful of a player who continues to be an integral part of the squad, it's also damaging in terms of morale.

Nonsense really and again demonstrates some of the impulsive posts that are made. Yes rest wellens perhaps, but pick up a couple of injuries in the midfield and he's there to come in and fill the gaps.

Love wellens to bits, but the diamond was more fluid and pacey without him today, sometimes it's who fits better together and it just worked yesterday

I agree regarding Danns, I wasn't particularly impressed with him for the first half an hour as he gave the ball away a lot. If that was Wellens he'd have been abused. He got in to the game more though and provided the assist for Vassell. His tracking back and interceptions were very impressive but I think there's more to come from him.

It's simple, Ritchie will have to step his game up. If he doesn't then there'll be pressure on him to be replaced after witnessing that master class yesterday and that was without Johnson too.

Wellens isn't a holding man in my opinion. Abe played there yesterday, and it looked like to get the best out of King. Wellens will dictate tempo, such as stopping play, which sometimes works. He can drive though, I saw that at Hull City away last season when he had more of a free midfield role and drove with the ball.

Yesterday showed how quick our tempo is without Wellens, Im not against Wellens as he is one of my favourite players but it shows we don't really miss him and our midfield of Fernandes,King,Abe and Danns blossomed without him.

I've thought Wellens has been a very frustrating player for a couple of years now, like people say playing the 'hollywood' pass all the time and it rarely coming off. Slows the game down far too much and today was a great example of life without him (don't forget he's getting on for 32). However I feel he will be very useful bringing on to protect a lead and slow the game down ESPECIALLY against tiring legs.

The only way is SCHLUPP!

Im confused!

Ive always rated Wellens workrate and ethics.

Im not a football manager wannabee but can one man not playing really make the difference to others getting in the game?

It gives Sven a good headache if it means others stepping upto the mark in order to stay in the team!!

I can't believe it.

I agree with both of your posts about Wellens in this thread!

Wellens is a valuable player for us. He'll have to spend a bit more time on the bench (especially at home) after yesterday, but we'll desperately need him at times this season. I'd start him most away games.

Well apart from any injuries etc. the team that started yesterdays game should start after the International break as well. That means leaving Wellens out of the starting 11. Bench yes, starting, no.

And i'm a Wellens fan as well for the most part.

Given that Danns has had very little gametime in recent weeks it is hardly surprising that he was a bit slow off the mark.

Last season he was the dominant attacking midfielder for Palace and I would love to see him given the chance to do that for us. At his best, he is the perfect link between our midfield and the strikers, one of the few players we have who can unlock a set defense.

I have been complaining about the negative influence Wellens has on our play for a very long time, long before it has become fashionable. One game cannot possibly be taken as vindication for that view but his absence (along with other factors, no doubt) certainly made a huge difference.

Although I'm pleased we performed the way we did without Wellens and now the 'love in' for him may stop, the key yesterday was Danns.

Danns by no mean was the best player in the midfield, however the fact that he held his position wide gave us so much more balance and options.

Fernandez likewise, although he didnt stay wide he has the energy to come in and out.

Yeah, I agree, I overreacted with what I said, he'd be useful to come on when we need to kill the game off.

He's just not the sort of player we need when we need to force the issue.

Same applies for Howard, even though he destroyed their defence yesterday.

Just don't think he's good enough considering he's 31 and the highest he's ever finished at is 5th in the championship

In recent times, the issues with Wellens is, he likes to neutralise the play.

1. Passing to the back and side ways is his first choice rather than being more positive.

2. Goes back to collect the ball from the defenders. I rather him positioned better in midfield, giving the defenders more options for making play.

3. The killer issue however is that majority of his passes are in open space. I would like to see him drive with the ball and commit the opposition before making the pass.

Derby we off colour yesterday, and Leicester were on form. Wellens will be back, but for now it should be the same team.
