Anger over matchday parking.

Residents have launched a petition calling on the council to stop sports fans parking their cars on a busy road on match days.

People living in Aylestone Road, Leicester, say they are not able to park near their homes when Leicester City or Leicester Tigers are playing at home, due to the number of vehicles parked there.

They are also frustrated that cars parking illegally on match days are not penalised by traffic wardens.

The petition was launched by Charlene Cancellara, 31, of Aylestone Road, who says parking permits for residents would solve the problem.

She said: "I am sick and tired of not being able to park when there's a football or rugby match on.

"They park on both sides of the road, on double yellow lines and down side streets, and residents just can't park anywhere. It's ridiculous.

"When I couldn't get a space the other weekend it was the final straw and I had to start this petition."

Residents say the problem is in the stretch of Aylestone Road nearest the city centre.

Dan Rogers, 31, who lives on this section of the road, said: "There's a parking warden at 8am on the weekdays, but when it comes to match days, the cars park everywhere and the warden turns a blind eye to it.

"You can feel like a prisoner in your own home at the weekend because you can't go out anywhere without fear of losing your parking space."

In 2009, a consultation was held to get views on plans to introduce a residents-only parking scheme, where people living in the area would have to pay for a parking permit. Only 256 out of the 1,045 who responded were in favour of the scheme.

Aylestone ward councillor Nigel Porter said: "I'm aware of the problem down there and I think the key is better enforcement. Traffic wardens need to do a better job of penalising cars parking illegally.

"I can also understand why local people rejected the parking permit before because it would have been costly and it's only a real issue at weekends."

The restrictions along the road include a waiting and loading ban on single yellow lines on weekdays, between 7.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6pm.

Leicester City Council said vehicles that park and cause obstruction can be ticketed by police and could be towed.

Deputy city mayor Councillor Rory Palmer said: "I can understand the frustrations of residents but the parking restrictions mean motorists are within their rights to park along this stretch of road within designated times.

"Once the petition has been received, I will discuss the issue with local councillors."

The club has been there a lot longer than these residents, it's not like they didn't know match days would cause issues.

Maybe if the Council relaxed parking regulations on many of the side roads near to the stadium there would be no need to park on that road.

Can understand it to be honest, must be a right pain in the arse.

The club doesnt help though, should do bus services to the stadium rather than just town centre and have put far bigger parking facilities in when the stadium went up. I think in the US now when a new football stadium goes up you have to provide parking for 25% of the stadium or something along those lines.

They knew there would be a problem on match days.

Other than that, they should walk whereever they want to go. When is it a problem, Saturdays/Sunday between 1 and 6pm. The City Centre is walking distance for them (or a bus) and if going further afield just plan your day around it.

And if anyone argues that point we go back to argument one. Anyone moving there knew about the stadiums before hand.

The club do bus services from all over Leicestershire to the stadium.

I don't even think all the existing LCFC parking space are filled probably because they are too expensive dunno.gifplus local parking spots have joined the rip of Britain brigade by pumping up prices from circa £3 to £5.

I have sympathy with the local residents but it's not as if it's a 'new' situation and we all pay road tax to use the roads. I've noticed around the Western pub much of the 'residents only' parking spots are empty.

I believe even the Enderby Park and Ride no longer goes down Aylestone Road thus missing the City, Tigers and the Royal.

Unfortunately public transport is no longer a service for the public with a view to the 'greater good' it's purely a business but that's what the majority have voted for.

Simple answer, bring a law in to say if you don't have a drive, you can't own a car. Would solve all the parking and blocked roads problems

The tell people they can only have 2.4 kids, can only eat 1800 calories a day, can only shit twice in any 24 hours and fornicate twice a week! :S

Yeah it's basically Fox Travel. Haven't you seen all of the buses after the game that are down that road next to the roundabout?

No , just no drive no parking. It'll happen one day anyway.

I think people parking illegally on double yellows and blocking drives and causing obstructions should be ticketed, but those that park safely on the road and don't cause an obstruction are perfectly within their right to do so.

If there was reasonably priced parking close to the ground people will pay for it, but it's not it is an added rip off on top of the already expensive match day experience. Always managed to find a parking space up around the university and lancaster road, a bit of a walk, but free and normally the traffic is ok by the time we get back to the car.

Don't know how up to date the google maps photo of Walkers is but there is plenty of space around it that can be turned into parking, but they only thing that it needs to be is reasonably priced.

So what about people that live on a street where it's not possible to have a drive?

A well thought out solution there.

I pay road tax, and I can park where I want as long its legal

I live in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, but there is a busy road nearby, traffic on that road annoys me 24 hrs a day, but I knew the road was there when i bought the house

I bet she's one of those people that uses that road annoying me, just like I'm one of the people who may park within half a mile of her house annoying her

Just live with it, or move.

Yes buses should be better, perhaps if they have a parking scheme the money raised from it could subsidise Enderby Park & Ride to come near the ground?

Council do their best to piss drivers off in the hope they dont drive.

Wonder how many Councillors ride a bike to work?

It must be bad for the residents but they know the score when they buy the house.

Lovely tho to se the traffic wardens strutting around Vicky park on Saturdays looking to ticket someone...cant do it on Sunday tho!!

At least it is a solution

In the same way culling a big percentage of the population to cut down on carbon emissions is a solution.

i.e. not really, it's just ****ing retarded.

And thats your solution is it, calling people retarded...knob head.. All i'm saying is if its good enough for Tokyo, its good enough for Leicester.

Doesn't have to be a big percentage, 15% will do, probably only 10% if we focus on the biggest polluters. I support your culling idea, it may also help with congestion on match days.

I drive past that new Birstall park and ride every match day and see about 8 cars parked in there, seems like a massive wasted opportunity to me why not try some sort of park and ride to either ground
