Walshy5 Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Can someone clear this up? Everytime we play them its all over they're forums how much they hate us and ive never understood why. Does it have anything to do with the 02/03 season when we went up with them?
Narborough_fox Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 The Leicester thing goes back to the late 80's early 90's (same with Swindon who were a real bogey side to us around then) when we played them often and there was needle on and off the pitch. The 92/93 season stoked it up with them scoring a last minute equaliser at Fratton in the league game towards the end of the season (a season we won 19 of our 23 home games). A few weeks later we had to suffer the playoff's knowing we were playing a team that finished 12 points behind us, battered them in the away leg (at The City Ground) without scoring and then 'jooliaaan' scored near the end. They were becoming intollerable cvnts. At Fratton we then had the 100 yards offside goal to burst our bubble and that saw them go to Wembley and they were rubbing our noses in it. The pitch invasion at the end was turning nasty to the point they shat it and even tried singing the Chimes to appease us FFS! It kicked off outside the ground and there was further trouble (I think a car was overturned/ set on fire on Fratton Bridge). They didn't go up, so we had them the next season but as we began to slide they stayed up there as play-off contenders. We played them towards the end of the season at Filbert Street and got small revenge by winning up there 3-0 (first win there for 64 years) being 3-0 up at half time with Speedie missing a pen, the floodlights failed and at one point it looked like the game would be called off FFS! HT lasted over 40 mins until they got the lights going, but that long half time meant more banter and hatred. Again after the game there were pockets of trouble. Leicester had become a needle match. Move on to 2002/03 when it was us two at the top all season battling it out. No mater what we did we couldn't seem to shake them off and internet banter moved the story on. There was the infamous waterlogged Fratton game which they could brag about and when we went up there, them going 1-0 put them top of the table for the first time all season (and the first time we'd not been top since about the third week). Loads more needle before Taylor equalised and we could have the last laugh - but we all stayed behind after the game for about half an hour to rub it in. In the Prem the coonts did the double over us and so the needle was still ticking away. Mandaric going there simply kept the rivalry going to this day, but I think it's usually a good indicator of a how serious a Pompey fan you were in the 90's by how much you hate Leicester. They also hate us which rubber stamps the fixture as proper rivalry for me and the one rivallry which is mostly based on footballing reasons kicking it off. Other than scummers, Mandaric could not have shat on the Pompey fans (he 'claims' to love) more than going to those cvnts.

Bob Weasel Fox Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Portsmouth is just a small suburb of Southampton isnt it?

You should have put that at the start as it was really confusing
Chairman of the Bored Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Stems from way back when before any of us were born (???). Well, I was alive and was there. Saturday 1st May, 1971, Fratton Park. We had already won the Second Division and literally took thousands (3,000-4,000 to their place). Took their Kop, took the piss and took the points 2-1. Hated us ever since.
Kitchandro Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 funny all these clubs that have issues with us and we don't give a ****. saddos I've never heard a Leicester fan say they hate Portsmouth so I don't know what that blokes on about. Also, I find it hard to believe we sang the chimes to 'appease them'
BNET Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 11,000 was the number of City fans in Fratton Park that day quoted, filled their end and the pitch afterwards. Got chased to Fratton station before the game, then train after train of city fans kept arriving, took over the ground.

dayday Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 After losing in the play-offs the pompey lot decided to take it out on any Leicester fan outside the ground including mothers and kids.....because of this there was real hatred for each other...i can remember a cup-tie down there year or two later that turned very ugly outside.

Was that the one that Philpot scored the only goal and their keeper got sent off for handball ?? McGhee was still manager then. Remember paying extra to sit in the wooden stand as I'd done my back in. Watching the City lads getting soaked on that open terrace made me very glad that I'd paid for an upgrade. Can't say that I feel any particular rivalry, to be honest, but I did used to have a Pimpey supporting boss who didn't like me much which I think was due to being a Leicester fan. He was a twat though.

Great post, was there after the play off game. loads of police standing around doing nothing as the trouble started.
rhett_72 Posted 26 November 2011 Posted 26 November 2011 i remember at filbert street when ally mauchlen kicked one of thiers in the head while ally was on the ground, so kung fu!! isnt pompey 8-1 city's biggest ever defeat? from way back
Vlad the Fox Posted 26 November 2011 Posted 26 November 2011 Our biggest league win was against portsmouth. 10~0, 20 october 1928. We beat them in the playoffs. 1 0 played at forest because the old main stand was being knocked down for the building of the carling stand. We drew 2 2 at portsmouth knocking them out which they didn't take too well. That was the year we lost to swindon in the final.
