The sad thing is alot of people think footballers don't get depression just because they get paid huge sums of money.

The pressure of peforming week in week out at a top standard or facing the risk of being slated for their peformance may be too much to take. Steve Kean for example, week in week out his own fans are constantly singing songs like ' Kean out' and constantly giving him willy puller gestures. That must be extremely hard to take.

The money they get can also be just too much for them to handle e.g. a 18 year old on 10k a week, I for one would not know how to deal with that kind of money at that age.

Yeah that's the point I was making, the situation was a lot worse. But I don't agree with that either. You shouldn't disrupt your team and captain just because of an even that has nothing to do with our particular football club.

It is an awful thing but shouldn't change the way we are set up at all.

Yeah agree with you on that completely I was just being a pedantic knob :P

This is so sad, really makes you think about putting problems into perspective, too early to jump to conclusions on whether it was media driven( i really hope not) but for someone to commit suicide its hard for me to think what a dark and sad place he must have been in makes me feel empty thinking about it.

Someone mentioned they were surprised that Bellamy did not want to play. They must have played together for years for Wales and was his gaffer, they must have known each other on a personal level for years.

Hope he gets the best tributes from the game he deserves.

True. They are still human beings at the end of the day, people who feel emotions and go through highs and lows in life.

Don't wanna detract from the main point of this thread, but I bet the Leeds fans will observe their minutes silence for this with much more respect than the 11/11/11

not to detract from the thread but leeds fans, in general, are ******.

People making jokes about Gary Speed need to take a long hard look the themselves. If that was your dad and people were making jokes about him how you would you feel. Gain some respect and think about his family.

Unreal to actually think that was only yesterday.

I am not usually one of these people for 'I loved him so much' now he has died, but this came as a very big shock. I just can't believe Gary Speed; a very well respected professional, a fantastic footballer and most probably going to be a good manager.

Still shocked. When I turned the TV on and it said 'Gary Speed' I just couldn't believe it. He must have had some bad news or going through something horrible to be drove to this, especially considering he had an MBE, played lots of games for big clubs such as Leeds and Everton, and was a National manager.

The problem is they don't think about if it happened to them. If they did they wouldn't do it.

I know. I'd just got in the car after playong footy and had a text.

Crazy to think it was yesterday. Had he already planned this? I remember them on about the Welshs' fixtures/group games for the WC Qualifiers, and he gave no indication of anything but that he was looking forward to those games

True, but that will always happen, no matter who it is or what line of work he/she was in.

Only just yesterday saw this in the Guardian, as well.

Exactly. Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Are you for real? No-one should be made captain just because someone they know died. What about Billy Sharpe? His kid died, which is a lot worse.

You my friend, are a moron.

RIP Gary Speed.

I was just thinking of Andy, and with him being the only Welsh player in our side, it might be a good thing to give Andy the captain's role against Blackpool on Tuesday night, or maybe lead the team out or something.

Didn't mean anything bad towards it, and if I offended you in any way im sorry.

In addition to what Finners just posted, did anyone see/read what Stan Collymore posted re: footballers, including himself, who suffer depression, on his blog?

Well worth a read. You can find it on his Twitter. It pales everything in to significance and really makes you think that just cos they appear to be living the good life as a professional footballer and earning a good wage etc, that isn't necessarily always the case.

It puts things in to perspective and to think low-life scum feel the need to bash their keyboards and throw insults after Collymore posted that is pretty shameful.

It takes huge guts to air your feelings on a public platform like that, more so if you suffer from a very serious illness which a lot of people are willing to just brush off without knowing the real ins and outs.

I don't think Pearson is likely to make King captain over this and as a Welshman I'm not really sure how I'd feel about the sentiment. Should every club in the country make anyone in their squad with a connection to Wales their captain for a one off game?

Billy Sharp's own son had just died, the situation is slightly different. I'm sure Andy King is upset, his coach has just died, but I think making a big show of it might be a little inappropriate.

As for people being surprised at Bellers for withdrawing - they'd been international team mates and friends for years, I can understanding wanting to "play for" someone but if I'd been told a close friend had died a few hours before I was due to play, football would be the last thing on my mind.

hung himself didn't he?

It's looking that way, but will anyone ever understand why? I'd like to know why he did this (I know that sounds a bit sick).

I've suffered, suffer from depression and you can't describe it and i've also lost a friend to suicide.

Trying to describe true depression is a waste of time since if you do not suffer you can never know just how bleak the world can look and feel and losing someone to suicide is a massive shock that you do not really take in straight away.

I feel for his family and friends and hope the media show some integrity in this.
