Kitchandro Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 The fact that's there's no obvious candidate means we don't really need one. I agree with this tbh. As much as I think a statue would be cool, I don't think one person stands out enough to warrant one. For example Lineker, Banks and Shilton went on to have incredible careers but do they stand head and shoulders above everyone else who played for Leicester? Maybe in terms of talent, but they weren't here that long and the team didn't really achieve anything when they played. Also, I'd like to remind people that 'Leicester boy' Shilton helped THEM win the European Cup which we now have to have rammed down our throats all the while. Thanks for nothing, Shilts. Likewise Izzet, Birch and Walshie. They are all huge favourites with City fans but is winning league cups really enough for a statue? Under O'Neill, I'd argue we weren't even punching above our weight as a club, only as a team. Walshie is actually more credible than most suggestions as he was here for nearly 15 years as a player. The Birch is a great servant to the Club but he didn't win anything with us as a player. The same could be said about Weller. O'Neill was our most successful manager so he's as good a suggestion as any, but in truth, his achievements weren't that great in the scheme of things. Chandler is our record goalscorer but not many people really think of him when they think of Leicester. If you were going to have 5 or 6 statues then some of these would be good suggestions. But I think it means more when you have an iconic figure as the only statue. Maybe if we get someone who really achieves something great with us, something unique which is unlikely ever to be repeated, then a statue of them would make sense, but as of now I wouldn't have one.
Narborough_fox Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 On a serious note... Keith Weller. Probably the greatest player to play for Leicester according to my dad who watched him as a kid and somewhat of a hero for many City fans.
Thracian Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 This is the single best idea I've heard all year! Yes, I'd go with that too.
Joe. Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Always a tough question really, it all depends on your own era. What does Arthur Rowley really mean to most Leicester fans? The answer is probably not too much. For Arsenal there are plenty of outstanding candidates - for us, not so much.
davieG Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 I've said it before but i'll repeat my idea of a series of Face Sculptures set into the external wall of the stadium like the bricks somewhat like this: They'd be relatively inexpensive and we could cover most people's serious suggestons.
strattylcfc Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Steve Walsh muzzy izzet defo then either Elliott lineker
absolutelegend Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Filbert Fox and Vicky Vixen (getting in on)
absolutelegend Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 ...seriously though, I love the idea of a statue. I like the idea of it going to a fans vote. Personally for me, one of Walshy running to the fans after his second against Derby. Perfect. I'm surprised some of the "fans" on this forum haven't suggested one of Gallagher & Fryatt. You call call it "irrational love".
echoes Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 I would have said Weller Worthington and Liniker until I thought about the Banks- Shilton suggestion . That's the one
Guesty Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Lineker - For all the obvious reasons plus he helped save the club when it went into administration. Banks - World Cup winner whilst playing for leicester, one of the best keepers ever etc. Chandler - All time record goal scorer and we had are highest ever league finishes when he played. Just cause it was a long time ago and none of us remember him we shouldn't count him out. If he'd acomplished that in the last 50 years he'd be a shoe in to have a statue.
Yokofoxes Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 For me, it'd be Muzzy Izzet, Steve Walsh and although not in my era, Keith Weller. When I first saw this I read "and although not in my era, Kasey Keller" and all I could think of was would the statue have a moveable mullet that could flutter in the wind.
stillwater Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Surprised it's not been said yet but what about the one and only Alan Young
GLC Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Actually I would like a statue of old jug ears Lineker and Muzzy Izzet
Finnegan Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Statues of living people are weird. Birch'll be worth one when he pops it I reckon. Bit of a clown and he makes me cringe but you can't fault his love for a meal ticket the club and his work for charity.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Banks Lineker Weller although Chandler and Rowley should be seriously considered also aswell as more recent players such as Walsh, Izzet, Lennon Alternative suggestions include perhaps a 3" lifesize Dennis Wise statue
jonthefox Posted 7 December 2011 Posted 7 December 2011 Weve had this debate before and not got anywhere. My personal preference would be a 'walk of fame' similar to what the tigers have. You can have as many names (or slabs) as you like then Gerrit sorted top.
Oh tommy wright Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 Statues, give me a break hardly a priority got enough of them in the midfield, and Beckford and Howard. Got to be honest think there pretty sad to be honest, unless Winston Churchill, did he use to play for city.
StanSP Posted 8 December 2011 Author Posted 8 December 2011 Just to clear up some confusion, I'm not saying that the club have said there will be statues. It was just a question of IF there were to be statues, who would you pick.
Green-Fox Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 for me would have to be; Alan Birchenall - Just a legend at this club always will be! Gary Linekar - Obvious reason home grown play done so much for leicester. Keith Weller - Bit before my time but heard so many great things about him. They would ideally be my top three!
Bugg Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 for me would have to be; Alan Birchenall - Just a legend at this club always will be! Gary Linekar - Obvious reason home grown play done so much for leicester. Keith Weller - Bit before my time but heard so many great things about him. They would ideally be my top three! IT'S LINEKER
StanSP Posted 8 December 2011 Author Posted 8 December 2011 Next up Gary Linekar. Banks, Chandler, Linekar. IT'S LINEKER Don't really want to turn it in to a spelling contest, same goes for them too!
surrifox Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 It's a disgrace that Stoke have a statue of Banks and we don't. No other Leicester player will ever have a World Cup winners medal. absolutely agree but I believe there is a view that the circumstances of his departure resulted in a less favourable attitude to him
citifox Posted 8 December 2011 Posted 8 December 2011 He did'nt want to leave the city, forced out by Shiltons stance. never as good as BANKSY anyway.
