purpleronnie Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 Surprised no-one has mentioned Freddie Starr, undoubtedly the funniest man I have ever seen on stage. blimey.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 'What to you want to see from a Torquay window? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? The Pyramids?'' Ah! John Cleese!

Webbo Posted 5 February 2012 Author Posted 5 February 2012 I think to be considered influential you would have to write your own stuff, otherwise it's the writer who is the influential person. That would exclude a lot of people on this thread.
Saxondale Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 Always found Connelly a bit over-rated. Obviously fairly funny, but not much more for me. My opinions aside, this article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/comedy/9059596/If-Billy-Connollys-asking-for-trouble-he-should-know-how-to-deal-with-it.html talks about his recent strops.
Mack Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 Any such list without Ken Dodd on it has clearly not been compiled with much knowledge.
Rincewind Posted 5 February 2012 Posted 5 February 2012 I think if I was to be influence about any comedian it would be on the writing side of it.
Reynard Bleu Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 Barry Cryer, writes for most of the popular comedians too.

That would exclude a lot of people on this thread. I agree with this, hence why I see John Cleese as my most influential comedian. I seem to appreciate and respect people who wrote/write their own material, whether it be comedians or musicians. Ha thats possibly the best line in the whole show. As well as 'Who won the bloody war anyway!' Oh and 'your room does have a seaview, its there between the land and the sky'! lol There are loads of fantastic lines in Fawlty Towers. It is my favourite comedy show and always will be... I love that line where that customers says "do you know a good place that serves French food?" and John Cleese says "yeah, France, they seem to love French food"
purpleronnie Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 Looks like its turning into the 'My favourite comedian' thread. As far as influential surely someone like Alexi Sayle would be on the list. When you think about what was before the 'alternative comedians' like sayle you had bernard manning and the like still doing mother in law and racist jokes.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 Why do people keep suggesting comedians that are actually IN the list?

Yes his alternative comedy stretched to " iv'e got a record by Billy Joel " and didn't you kill my brother ? fvcking hilarious and about as influential as a tin of beans. He guested on the " young ones " and that was the time you went to make the tea.

That's what I was thinking with Bill Hicks. I'm not old enough to remember comedy beforehand but, whether you like him or not, I've always thought of him as influential in popularising the thoughtful, often political, ranty type comedy

purpleronnie Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 Love bill hicks but he's a yank (well was).
Alexikokopops Posted 7 February 2012 Posted 7 February 2012 Love bill hicks but he's a yank (well was). It's times like this I wish I'd read the title properly...

One of my favourites comdies but not the favourite but it for me it has the most and best one liners you could ever have in each episode. Shame they couldnt have done more than 12 episodes really as it was fantastic. So many lines to choose from, its just so funny. Possibly my favourite episode is the Germans. The bit when the fire bell rings and he has an arguement with them is class, but I have always liked the bit when he wakes up in hospital and talks to the nurse rudely. 'Dont touch me I dont know where you've been!' 'My God you're ugly arent you!' .....................'You need a plastic surgeon dear not a doctor!' Class
