Super_horns Posted 9 December 2012 Posted 9 December 2012 A little scare which is typical England but got there. Now to win the series...
Guest MattP Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 Awesome performance again, can't see us losing the last test, pretty sure the pitch will be baking in the light as we speak mind...... Could even play an extra batsman in this to give us some extra depth.

What do you think they'll plump for: Bresnan, Onions or Tredwell as a 3rd spinner? I personally think they'll go for the tried and tested Bresnan. Although if the pitch was to get uneven, cracked and variable bounce, the wicket-to-wicket bowling of Onions would be interesting.
Corky Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 They were suggesting that Meaker might be called up, but Bresnan seems the favourite.

Has to be Bresnan, no point throwing another debutant in and Bresnan can bat as well so we can stiffen up the tail. Sure we'll be taking a very close look at pitch this morning.

Alexikokopops Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 Just got four tickets to the fifth day at the Oval to see us presented with the Ashes. Excited is an understatement.
Alexikokopops Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 And two tickets to the first day. WINNER
Guest MattP Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 Nice one Alex. Indian side will be interesting as well this week, you would think they will have to go in five bowlers given the state of the series. Jadeja in to play three spinners and probably Kohli out.
Alexikokopops Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 Nice one Alex. December just got expensive but it's worth it January is also going to be expensive if I win all my Lord's ballot entries...
Guest MattP Posted 12 December 2012 Posted 12 December 2012 It will all be worth it if you get them. £30 for a day could turn out to be absolutely exceptional value given the way the last few tests at Lords have gone.

I've just bagsed one of them too, I was a loser in the ballot but my mate one and bought 4 tickets for the last day, so I said I'd have one of them. Will try when the losers get a chance to buy later.

I've given my spare ticket for day 1 and one of the tickets for day 5 to my cousin who's coming over from Australia in the hope he'll sort me out for the second Ashes series of 2013 Where are your tickets for the Oval? I'm in block five, side on view.

Guest MattP Posted 13 December 2012 Posted 13 December 2012 Some pretty strong rumours out there Root in for Patel for a debut, surely that means Bresnan over Meaker? No way would we go with two debutants in a game like this.

No way would we go with two debutants in a game like this. That would surprise me, I can't see much benefit in bringing root in for one test, Patel may not have had a great series, but he is at least accustomed to the climate, he contributes with bat and ball, although admittedly not much so far. If this was the Strauss regime it would be unchanged but Bresnan in for Finn. Will cook prove to be a more adventurous captain...
Guest MattP Posted 13 December 2012 Posted 13 December 2012 It's a big call, Samit might have had his last chance now if he goes with the young guys we have coming through. Can see the pro's for Root, great fielder, could excellent bat, play's spin well. Patel might just be completely out of touch even in the nets.

I could think of easier tests to make your debut, I guess a failure won't make us lose the series, so in that sense the pressure is off, looks like we will get an earlier than expected chance to see, he has already contributed more than Cook, Bell and Compton combined.
surrifox Posted 13 December 2012 Posted 13 December 2012 Samit unlucky to lose out , a handy cricketer and has had some dreadful decisions in the series - certainly must be wondering how the useless Bell has kept his place ahead of him
purpleronnie Posted 13 December 2012 Posted 13 December 2012 Still not sure about compton, and surely now bell will be dropped...no pun intended.
Guest MattP Posted 13 December 2012 Posted 13 December 2012 Fantastic day of Test Cricket. 97 overs and less than 200 runs. I was half taking the piss when I said I expected them to be baking the pitch already but it looks like they did, never seen a wicket harder to score on in my life. If we can bat for a olot tomorrow and get near 300 we should be ok, it's not going to be a pitch anyone can score 500 in a couple of days on. Still not sure about compton, and surely now bell will be dropped...no pun intended. He's a prospect and we'll see, decent start and it could be him and Root eventually battling for that 2 spot. Wouldn't drop any player though on the basis of this test match on this wicket, 1 off 28 says it all. Bell still has so much class to offer and he'll score bagloads agaianst Australia again.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 December 2012 Posted 13 December 2012 Watched from when Pietersen went out and i must say Root and Prior looked very good in defence. Can someone please tell me a bit about Root, is he the next big thing or considered lucky to get his debut? Noticed only young and only has an average average but solid for a 21 yr old.

By trade he's an opening batsmen. Good player of spin and widely admired by the folk at the ECB.

If his a good player of spin (which was evident yesterday), it might be wise him doing a Michael Hussey. Huss was an opener who is a great player of spin so when he started playing tests they played him as a 5 or 6.
