Test Cricket 2012

Big win for India over Australia, by 8 wickets, wonder where the India fans are that wanted Dhoni dropped?

I was discussing with a mate as Dhoni walked to the crease how his average is only 38 in test cricket and how overated he is.....So Dhoni can thank us for his big innings.

Still have no idea why he bats so low. Part of that low average must come from the fact he has to start hitting out when he is with the tail.

His talent is unquestioned so that average is bizarre. I actually don't think he is a great captain mind. Some of his on field decisions and field placements are baffling.

Yeah but on the other hand he should have more not outs which would boost his average.

He doesn't bat blue though generally from when I've seen him, he starts to try and score quick runs instead of just seeing off the innings not out.

He still averages 1 not out every 10 innings tho

Batting first, looks cold.

Won't say anything about the Aussies.

Compton gone already! Not a great start when he's trying to impress.

Less said about the Aussies the better, Matt. My cat could have put up a better fight in that 2nd innings.

Has to be Root and Bairstow over Compton for me for the ashes.

Cook gone. Dross shot after being dropped a few balls earlier.

Edit: KP gone first ball. Wagner on a hat trick.

Shocking start. Some awful footwork and shot selection.

England are playing like Leicestershire. Shiiiit. Some terrible shot selections going on.

Geoff Boycott - "ten days of bungee jumping and playing golf is not ideal preparation for a test series" lol

lol

Finn giving it a right crack mind, enjoying this.

I've seen some poor shot selections in my time but last night was up there with some of the worst.

I know, if it was great bowling you dont mind so much, but when players just give their wicket away its frustrating.

Annoying thing is they seem to do this every time.

Last four tours now our first innings we have been bowled out for less than 200. Something is clearly wrong in the preparation.

(On a selfish note I'm slightly glad as I thought travelling all the way for teh Third Test was going to be a dead rubber for me, shouldn't be now)

Got a bad feeling we will see Panesar's limitations again now, great as a 2nd spin option on a flat deck but the front line spinner on tops like this he always struggles.

We'll only realise in 10-15 years time what a magnificent spinner Swann was, massive hole to fill.

Imperative we have him fit though for the summer with the way the Aussies play off spin.

This was posted at lunch (81-5) on the Guardian's Over By Over coverage yesterday, which pretty much sums up how poor we are in the first test of overseas series:

Evening one, evening all In life, as a rule, you need to prepare for the main event, rather than dive straight in. Foreplay. Title sequences. Hors d'oeuvres. Those 40-second tracks at the start of an album that the artist erroneously assumes to be profound. The excruciatingly formal small talk at the hairdressers before the first comforting scrape of the scissors.

In the corpulent 21st-century cricket calendar, however, there is little time for prepping the oven, and the consequence of that has been a series of one-sided first Tests in which the home side trounce the undercooked away side. At the risk of reminding you of the Kaiser Chiefs' existence, this is the modern way.

England aren't necessarily facing a trouncing here, but they have thus far continued their dreadful recent form in the first Test of an overseas series. Since Andrew Strauss beat South Africa in December 2004, England's record is: P13 W1 D2 L10. They are actually flattered by that appalling record: the one victory was against Bangladesh, and in the two draws – against South Africa in 2009-10 and Australia in 2010-11 – they were largely outplayed, even if the latter ended with the triumphant score of 517 for one.

Their batting was poor this morning, with only Kevin Pietersen receiving a good delivery. They looked like batsmen who have played only one first-class match in three months – which, of course, is precisely what they are.

Pretty much spot on there Alex.

We did well today, really pulled it back and bowled extremely well, draw the best we can hope for but at least the bowlers will know they can rattle through this order now when they get it right.

Random question - when you went to the Ashes in Australia did you do it yourself or use the Barmy Army tour? I'm heading out there this Christmas for the WACA and MCG but doing it myself since I'm stopping in Malaysia to see a friend and I have relatives I can stay with in Perth who's sorting me out with some tickets there but I'm not sure how to go about the MCG. I'm assuming it's not too bad since it's HUGE but I'll only be there for days 1-3 (or 1-2, I can't remember) and would ideally like to go on Boxing Day!

If you fancy watching a Day in the Members i could get you a ticket Alex, it's normally only an extra $10 to watch it in the members. Also it's highly recommended to go across to the royal at some point during the days play to see a 'show' whilst at the G.
