_Fatboyslow_ Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Wasnt it because of the La Manga fire extinguisher incident? What did Benj have to do with it? To be fair I think Stan the Man had lost the plot by the time he left us, his next head line was not turning up for a match due to tooth ache, great player and a wasted England midfield of Gaz Le Tiss and Stan the Man all flawed in there own way.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 But back on topic another PT classic was the handling and sale of LENNON to Celtic that was the final nail.
LCFCCHRIS Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Hobbs. We maybe should have kept gradel but every time I saw him play, he didn't look that special.
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Matt Piper - I know he ended up with a career ending injury but can't help thinking it could have been oh so different if he'd stayed here... Max Gradel - Don't need to explain this to... Mark Davies - (Technically we didn't sell him) Gutted we couldn't stump up the funds to sign him on a perm...
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Heskey , He was my fave player as a kid and I think I cried when I heard he had left... Only just bought a shirt with his name on the back too.
FrankieADZ Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Matt Piper is 1 that sticks out for me. loads of potential shown with us...then went to Sunderland and the injury jinx popped up
grth2004 Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 gutted when he was sold to villa , it never realy worked out for him there either , it was his choice to leave i think ? i have the feeling if he had stayed he would of ended up an all time legend and not a could have been.
AKCJ Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Biggest mistake is surely letting Pearson leave? Where would we be if we kept him? I'd say we'd be in the PL by now.
Narborough_fox Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 For me until we signed Kasper in the summer it was not buying Fulop on a permanent deal when we had the chance, yes I realise this isn't a big selling mistake! Was just so good for us and between then and since we've got Kasper we must of been through 10 players in a position where you want stability.
Candidcamera Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Derek Dougan to Wolves is the all time worst for me too. Of recent times the Neil Lennon to Celtic stands out and Max Gradel to Leeds.
Petchy Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Hobbs. Anyone saying Gradel is doing so in hindsight and nothing more. Complete disagree with this very general statement. I couldn't care in the slightest how much he commanded in fees after us, all I was concerned about was that I liked him whilst at Leicester as it was refreshing to see us have a decent winger during that period of time after not having one for so long. As I mentioned before, the pre-season friendly against Birmingham was where he began to stand out as his desire to attack and take people on was something we weren't used to with the dross we had before (Newton, Glombard, Sylla etc.)
Haydos Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Complete disagree with this very general statement. As I mentioned before, the pre-season friendly against Birmingham was where he began to stand out as his desire to attack and take people on was something we weren't used to with the dross we had before (Newton, Glombard, Sylla etc.) He had never really done anything that great though. He showed his potential on occasions but was never really consistently good. I know he was younger but it's like Lloyd Dyer: Yes he can be a threat and take defences apart but if he doesn't do it often enough is he really that good a player? Maybe the 'nothing more' bit wasn't required but it is easier to say 'I would have stuck with him' when you look back from now. The fact is we don't know how he would have turned out had he stayed here, he might be even better than he is now, or he might be worse. It was a mistake but it was by no means our biggest. Take a look at those who want us to cash in on Kingy now, there's plenty. And how many regret selling Hobbs and Gradel. Food for thought.
demon_dog Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Is it me getting old and losing my memory, or did we really sell Gerry Taggart against his wishes? This if the case was a big mistake.
Guy Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 I would agree with that, we didn't sell him he wanted to leave. I think with Gradel, Fryatt, Hobbs and Morrison it wasn't so much that we sold them it was the criminally small amount we sold them for. Biggest mistake though was selling/releasing Collymore. Definitely substance with the recent listings of Gradel, Fryatt and Hobbs re the past couple or so years with Pearson and Sven. Morrison was ok but seemed to lose his way under Sousa - by which time he was on his way to League One by the time Sven arrived. Then again the whole team lost it's way under Sousa's brief, disastrous spell here! Collymore was good but I think he suffered somewhat without Heskey once "Bruno" was sold to Liverpool! We all remember that Sunderland game at home with their explosive partnership in full swing, which had it stayed would've seen us probably challenging for European places via the league the following season - not just via the league cup!....although with Peter Taylor incharge after O'Neill's departure then that was never known. Also from that era, as well as Stan, then Ian Marshall, Steve Walsh and Tony Cottee were packed off too early by a certain Peter Taylor.....especially when you saw the garbage he brought in as replacements - Akin"badbuy"i, Lee Marshall, Lee Morris, Trevor Benjamin (although he improved), to name a few duds! Also did we mess up on selling Neil Lennon to Celtic or did he just want out??
Collymore Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Ben Thatcher and Callum Davidson were players I wish we could have kept longer.
Kitchandro Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Hobbs was a massive player in our play-off season and was phased out pretty sharpish by Sousa and then Sven. He was playing poorly at the time no doubt but he was, and still is, undoubtedly a class defender at this level. It was criminal we let him go so quickly and for so little. Same with Fryatt really, I don't miss him but considering the form he was in under Pearson, we should have been getting £3m for him. Gradel was a promising player for us. He suffered a family bereavement par-way through the league one season and his form subesquently dropped. But he showed potential. Similarly to Schlupp, you can't expect a complete player at 19. He started to realise his potential once he left us. We got rid of him too early and that's not just hindsight, I thought so at the time. He was one of the few exciting players we had at the time and we had to make do with Oakley on the wing instead. Oh how we could do with him now. Hume wasn't a big mistake whether he wanted to go or not, we finished top of league one and had a brilliant season after that so we didn't really miss him. However, I wish people wouldn't overstate things all the while, he wasn't a 'terrible player', at that time he was very good at this level, but was surrounded by complete retards. He got a decent amount of goals for a couple of seasons despite shit service and being played on the wing by Holloway. I suggest you look back at some of the quality of goals he scored for us before calling him terrible.
Karljohn Posted 10 April 2012 Posted 10 April 2012 Biggest selling error. . . Hmmm P1 Chelsea FA Cup tickets to P3 Season ticket holders online on the first day of sale.
