Whilst this may be harsh on some countries and the good people of those countries, no country with any racism that could potentially lead to death during the tournament should be allowed near hosting it. The fact they are is just astounding. Such a dumb idea.

How on earth would they have coped if Israel had qualified for the finals? There would have been carnage. As it is, I can understand why families of black England players don't want to travel to see them. The authorities are clearly not in a position to guarantee their safety.

The England-Scotland game caused a fair amount of disruption in London that year, though maybe not on the scale of Poland v Russia this time around.

It was also 16 years ago....we've improved other counties have not.

Finnegan Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 It's shocking if you focus all your media efforts on showing how shocking it is but its difficult to really get a feel for how bad it is until the tournament starts. I don't remember as much press questioning the danger of going to South Africa or the ethics of letting them host. Should a fringe minority be allowed to ruin a nations image or should we let them host and prove to the world that not only are the ordinary, decent fans the majority but that their authorities can suppress any trouble makers sufficiently and keep the games safe? If anything should happen, I do think we should impose harsh sanctions on the country, ban their clubs from Europe, make them play home internationals behind closed doors or on neutral grounds, etc. But stopping them hosting it because of a few knuckle draggers? Just feels like giving in to it.
Leicester_Numan Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 We have our own extreme right wingers in this country, the difference is that we were forced to deal with hooliganism and extreme racism like that so that kind of scum generally doesn't get near a football ground. Maybe with a highly embarrassing but hopefully non-lethal incident at the tournament, they'll be forced to deal with it as well.
21st Century Fox Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 It would seem one of the whole points of allowing countries like this to host tournaments is to shine a spotlight on them in the hope of improving and increasing interest in the sport and their footballing culture. Football would just grow into a stagnant, incestuous pool if the safe options were always allowed to host. Hopefully the result would be that these hardcore minorities would eventually be squeezed out as interest increased, diversity in players and fans would increase as coverage and interest in their domestic leagues improve. The worrying thing about Ukraine is more the authorities in charge. With their track record I can't see much will for long lasting improvements once the outsiders and cameras have left.
