Daggers Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 Should a fringe minority be allowed to ruin a nations image? It's the electoral system that we have to blame - and people forgetting how shit the Tories were last time.
Guest MattP Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 It's the electoral system that we have to blame - and people forgetting how shit the Tories were last time. Yes the state the Tories left the country in last time was terrible..... Bring back Broon.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 Terrible, terrible racism. Disgusting. Subtitling Asians who are speaking perfectly good English.
Daggers Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 Yes the state the Tories left the country in last time was terrible..... See? Even the Tories agree how shit they were.
Guesty Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 It's obviously a problem and something the powers that be need to look at and tackle. I do wonder if it's a lot of scaremongering though. You can find videos of lots of things and pick bits that suit your agenda. For example the rest of the world could say London/United Kingdom doesn't deserve to host the Olympics because it's a violent city/country and isn't safe. Then just show an hours worth of the riot footage. I doubt there will be a repeat of the riots, but a media programme could scare a bunch of foreigners from coming if they really wanted to - and people would believe it.
Saxondale Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 It's shocking if you focus all your media efforts on showing how shocking it is but its difficult to really get a feel for how bad it is until the tournament starts. I don't remember as much press questioning the danger of going to South Africa or the ethics of letting them host. I'm pretty sure the media were all over how much of a dangerous shithole South Africa is before the World Cup. Should a fringe minority be allowed to ruin a nations image or should we let them host and prove to the world that not only are the ordinary, decent fans the majority but that their authorities can suppress any trouble makers sufficiently and keep the games safe? If anything should happen, I do think we should impose harsh sanctions on the country, ban their clubs from Europe, make them play home internationals behind closed doors or on neutral grounds, etc. But stopping them hosting it because of a few knuckle draggers? Just feels like giving in to it. The impression that Panorama gave is that it isn't a fringe minority, quite the opposite in fact. I agree with you about the potential sanctioning should they make a tit of themselves, but I'm not sure UEFA have the minerals to do it these days.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 I recently went to Scotland and there were celtic crosses everywhere. UEFA should throw the book at them!

Guest Bilo Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's families seemed pretty worried. I don't blame them. The appalling racism, the misogynistic attitudes towards women and the theft rates would put anyone off. That said, you think they'd just stay in a different hotel to John Terry and family.

Real Cass Pennant Panaroma program reaction from me Had to see it as annoyed with papers and all that coffin stuff so glad to see Sol Cambell on Panarama able to balance comments from his eyes as player and his experience too. For one England fans are in main already not going euro 2012because of the rip-off. Many say saving for Brazil and any East Europe game involving travelling support you only get the England... regular who go. Who also have all experienced police that go OTT with Eng fans, if involved or not. All that coffin talk ain’t gonna happen as their country is on show and wants the FIFA millions from TV and sponsors. If youre gonna die it would have been in WC 2010 cos how dangerous is South Africa. They clear and distance the problem areas and move people away from main event like they did for F1 recently. I have been Euros myself and there is less than a dozen ethinic or non-white Eng fans from what I saw and it was a WHITE English fan who died at hands of a illegal in Leisbon square Euro 2004. Walcott, Chamberlin, Cambell and co would not have family sat anywhere where regular England following are located as just like at normal English games friends and family of players get area in respectable stand together with club employees and youth players etc. Those players worried fair enough I’m not having a pop for what they watch is real on camera and these guys live their hate for real, but com’on can they really get through the security surrounding the England squad. Truth is there was more to fear from Spanish, Italian and Belguim police if you been an England fan from past experiences. Also the regular fans have been out to these teams before and know the score, they will keep together, find their own places often away from obvious gathering sopots like squares and are likely to distance themselves then travel in towards kick-off time. This scream up has to my mind not added to the danger of a handful of non-white fans because we know that is always there (do you really travel abroad without looking up a few do’s and don’ts?). All this will do is add to the danger of all England fans now as news travels online etc and they(our hosts) will take this as an attack on their country and people, a real slur on all and this will still up nationalisim, that turns into hatred towards the English fan in general. Just been looking at England fan pics for a book England Hooligan Army, always get one or two that like a nazi salute, check the scoreboard images of Germany 1-England 5 and you will see. Panaroma and Sky recently did good investigative work at risk to get in there and film what nastiness lies under the surface but the reactions these will have from some of the show’s Pr or press headlining is likely to stir up worsening problems I think personally and any English fan is got that coming from not just the right-wingers but OB and ordinary nationals, need be careful where they drink for sure now if going out there. As he said, the players' families are likely to be the safest people out there, the players aside.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 29 May 2012 Posted 29 May 2012 Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's families seemed pretty worried. Its pretty much their first tournaments. Unexperienced families will always have doubt about going there. SA was the place where people were going to get stabbed, shot and bum****ed. And that was whilst watching the game. Its the same as anywhere and any walk of life. Its still only a minority of people. Yes, a much larger minority than our right wing minority, but still a minority!

davieG Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 BBC Manchester City and Italy striker Mario Balotelli has threatened to walk off the pitch if he is racially abused at Euro 2012, which kicks off next week. Balotelli added he would "kill" anyone who dared throw a banana at him in the street. A recent BBC Panorama programme revealed cases of racism and anti-Semitism in football grounds in host nations Poland and Ukraine. "If [racism] does happen I would leave the pitch and go home," said Balotelli. "Racism is unacceptable to me, I cannot bear it. We are in 2012, it can't happen. "If someone throws a banana at me in the street, I will go to prison because I will kill him." The Panorama programme showed fans making Nazi salutes on the terraces, black players being taunted with monkey chants and a vicious assault on a group of Asian students. Former England captain Sol Campbell advised fans not to travel, suggesting they would be risking their lives if they did so. Ukraine's Euro 2012 director Markian Lubkivsky said Campbell's remarks were "insolent". Former Inter Milan striker Balotelli, 21, was regularly the target of racist abuse when playing in Italy. In an interview with France Football, Balotelli also said he believes he is a genius. "I think I am a genius, but not a rebel," he said. "I have my life, my world. I do what I want, without annoying anyone. "I believe I am more intelligent than the average person. "The talent God gave me is beautiful and wonderful, but it is difficult because you are always facing other people keen to judge you. "There are few people with such talent, so there are few able to judge what I am doing."
Finnegan Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 The impression that Panorama gave is that it isn't a fringe minority, quite the opposite in fact.I agree with you about the potential sanctioning should they make a tit of themselves, but I'm not sure UEFA have the minerals to do it these days. That's sort of my point though, really, you do a Panorama program with a potential agenda (a little residual bitterness for not being granted your own major international football tournament lately?) that's clearly setting out from the start to get ratings by being sensational is clearly going to make the situation look awful. I've never been to Eastern Europe, I can't make my own assessment as to how accurate it was. Maybe it's truly awful, I don't know. But I've a couple of good friends from both Poland and the Ukraine and I can't say they've ever struck me as in any way backwards! What about the potential dubious ethics of Middle Eastern oil states hosting or even the massive class and wealth divide in Brazil and the fact FIFA are essentially trying to force them to sell alcohol in their stadiums? No host is going to be perfect, especially the more you take the tournament off the beaten track (which I think it should be) but, as I said, we're not going to know how well they actually handle it until, really, it's too late. So you either take that risk for the good of the sport and let's hope that it all pulls together or you let "safe" nations host it every year and give nobody else anything to strive for.
