Whitbread Signs - NOW OFFICIAL!

I'm liking the look of that, looks much more solid than any of the setups from last season

I agree Billy. One thing is for sure, we need to keep a consistent back 4 to work a partnership rather than chopping and changing every other week. Will be interesting to see what sort of role SSL will play.

Got a big feeling that if Whitbread signs, St Ledger will leave either now or in Jan. He wants a guaranteed first team place, and if Whitbread and Morgan are fit, you have to assume he won't get it.

Neither is Morrison, Hobbs, Brown, Berner. Just because the players don't have such a high reputation doesn't mean it's going to be any worse in practice.

I know, hence why I said 'on paper'.

Yeah definitely, hopefully because this is Pearson's squad and he has all summer to try out formations and partnerings, there will be a lot less trial-and-error when the season gets underway.

Same, i think Pearson is tactically stronger and his teams are very well organised. Anyways...do some work ;)

You might be right, but I think the main reason St. Ledger wanted guaranteed first team football was the Euros around the corner. With them out the way, and no tournament for two years, he might be willing to fight for his place in the team now. Besides, if Whitbread is often injured, St. Ledger will get plenty of chances to impress.

Clearly this was the 'surprise' that never happened on Saturday so I think it's believable that's it's a done deal.

Oh my lord. There was no surprise! The OS simply used that word to get people down to the ground and drive shirt sales! :frantics:

The surprise was you'll be able to make it home before your shirt disintegrates :P

Or possibly I'm right ad the signing ht a hitch, we will never know. Clever marketing or bad timing can't prove either way but clearly the signing is close enough for him to have been 'revealed' on Saturday. Not saying I'm right but it's a bit of a coincidence.

But only that long, once home it becomes a risky business.

If it was Whitbread's signing there's no way they would have taken the risk of not being able to unveil him as an LCFC player on Saturday, they wouldn't have done it unless it was already signed and sealed.

There was no surprise. All the article in question said was that LCFC fans were in for a surprise when the new kit was unveiled on Saturday because there had been so much speculation about what it would look like over the summer. Nothing more. People like to read a bit too much into the tiniest things.

According to the Merc we will still be after another CB after signing Whitbread.

Well we have to be really, can't believe we'll survive a season with just 3 unless he's promoting an academy player

I just found an article from March this year, written by a Norwich fan. I have pasted some of it below, along with a link.

Title: Zak Whitbread is Norwich City’s key man at the back

"But when Whitbread is fit, he plays. That is not to second guess the manager. That is to learn the lessons of recent history. The cultured centre back’s season last year effectively started against Sheffield United in late December 2010. In 22 Championship appearances thereafter, Norwich lost only twice; away to both Burnley and Swansea. Whitbread’s partnership in central defence alongside Elliott Ward was the bedrock which helped propel Lambert’s squad all the way to a second consecutive promotion."

"A hamstring injury at Chelsea earlier this season robbed Whitbread of another three months of his career. More rehabilitation. More watching from the sidelines."

"Yet his return for the home Premier League win against Newcastle triggered a league run which fired the Canaries well clear of the current relegation scrap. Defeat to Champions-League contenders Tottenham and Martin O’Neill’s rejuvenated Sunderland are the only blemishes on a nine-game spell around the turn of the year. Pure coincidence on both occasions? No, not for me, which is in no way meant to downplay the herculean efforts of Whitbread’s other team mates."

"The 27-year-old should now be approaching his prime after learning his trade among some of the best at Liverpool. The pedigree is not in doubt; despite failing to quite edge past the likes of Jamie Carragher at the zenith of his own Anfield powers."

"Whitbread possesses the physique of a boxer and a craftsman’s quality with that left foot; allied to a sense of anticipation and football intelligence not even the best coach can teach. The former Millwall man brings a balance to the centre back pairing and a calmness in possession."

"All the traits of a modern- day defender, in essence, when the opposition routinely retreat into their own half to concede space and time higher up the pitch. A Norwich backline with the American international provides John Ruddy with an extra layer of security stationed right in front of him."

"Whitbread did not deserve to be on the losing side against Manchester United on his latest return from another hamstring setback. There was a fascinating comparison to be drawn with Rio Ferdinand – truly a world class defender at his best. Ferdinand is still a quality operator as he showed at Carrow Road; albeit age forces him to increasingly rely on experience to compensate for declining physical attributes."

"Whitbread was Rio’s equal at Carrow Road. The goal line clearance to deny Danny Welbeck after the young England forward had poked past the advancing Ruddy stood out. There was arguably a less eye-catching, but no less significant piece of defending, to thwart the marauding Ryan Giggs earlier in the second period. The Welshman in full flow was halted by a perfectly-timed interception just inside the Norwich penalty area. A fraction late and in all probability the champions would have earned a chance to double their advantage from the spot."

"Lambert’s immediate priority remains sealing the club’s Premier League status over the coming months. Ensuring Whitbread is at Carrow Road for the best years of his career beyond the defender’s current contract would be no less a noteworthy achievement."

Whoops!

Zak Whitbread set for Leicester City move

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson is on the verge of making ex-Norwich City defender Zak Whitbread his fifth summer signing, BBC Radio Leicester reports.

The 28-year-old centre-half is a free agent having being released by the Premier League side in the summer after four years at Carrow Road.

Former Liverpool trainee Whitbread is understood to be in advanced talks with the Foxes after passing a medical.

He played 21 games for the Canaries last season, all of them starts.

I've just realised that Whitbread is pretty quick.

Good.

Morgan and Whitbread at the heart of the defence looks as if it could be good stuff.

It said at least one more, which means Whitbread not another one after Whitbread.

I think four is needed aswell, but I would like someone like Parkes or Taft being given the chance.

Looks like a proper Nigel Pearson back line now.

We still need a winger or two though right? Unless we're playing strikers as inside forward types again? But even so we'll need a plan B/C.

This literally sounds like a case of keep him fit and we are golden. It sounds like the only issue. Started every time he was fit for a solid Prem club last season. I'm certainly not worried about lack of quality.

I think the big surprise was the shirt sleeves
