Mark_w Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Don't get all the brain dreads on here heralding a Morgan/Whitbread partnership ahead of St Ledger. St Ledgers a proven international yet people still put Morgan and Whitbread ahead of him. Could them two play at top international level? I'd say no! Can't see SSL staying if he's only making the bench, expect a clamour of clubs in for him like last Jan when NP got cold feet and did a u turn after such huge interest from here and abroad. Previous part of the Championship team of the year and current captain, Wes Morgan. Former Premier League defender who the Norwich fans wish they had kept, and expected to end up at Villa, Zak Whitbread. Sean St. Ledger is a good defender no doubt but lets not forget that he has never done anything special at club level, and we are talking about getting into the Ireland squad here. There's a reason that the biggest clubs interested in him during January were then mid-table Championship sides like Ipswich.
okie fox Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 http://www.mlssoccer...leicester-city? He becomes the fourth American to join the Foxes, following Kasey Keller, dual citizenship-holding Chivas USA winger Ryan Smith and 1930 World Cup defender Alexander Wood. Wasn't Henderson, a forward who played around 1979-80, American?
kingfox Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 St Ledger has been very good for us, especially in the final part of last season he was one of our better players especially in our home games, not so away but still he was more than comfortable. Whitbread has injury problems but he is another solid option. Morgan, St Ledger and Whitbread is strong, St Ledger will get chances this season, he must stay because two options isn't good enough is it.
Petchy Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 No way we'd put St Ledger out at right back. That position is firmly De Laet's. Quite excited about the season now as we look quite solid.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Great, we can chant "USA! USA!" every time he does something well. Just like having Kasey Keller back. Oh, for f---- sake.
absolutelegend Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 St Ledgers a proven international yet people still put Morgan and Whitbread ahead of him. brilliant If Morgan and Whitbread were "irish" too then they'd be proven internationals too St. Ledger isn't good enough in many ways for me - pace, height, passing. Great signing this by Nige. We still need 1 more defender.

We should sign the San Marino starting 11. They might be no good and concede a lot of goals, but at least we would have a team full of internationals!

Bluetintedspecs Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Wasn't Henderson, a forward who played around 1979-80, American? Martin henderson is Scottish played for Rangers then joined Philadelphia Club which is where I believe we signed him from hence the American connection but deffo a Jock!

Great signing this by Nige. We still need 1 more defender. I don't agree with the St Ledger love in, but I also don't agree with the marmite approach, it seems that on the opposite end people think he should be nowhere near our squad. Reality is he's a good championship defender, one that would make it into many clubs in this leagues back four, although I don't think he'll make it at a higher level. SSL will do enough to challenge for his place in the starting line up, just because he plays for Ireland doesn't make it any less impressive that he's an international player, they aren't a small nation that you hope you come up against in major tournament qualifiers they are a fairly good international team, and SSL plays a huge part within that team. He's not the quickest but he reads the game well, he is small but for his size he beats no end of players in the air week in week out. As for his passing, going on last years team we struggled with any real link up play and connection between the midfield and back four, where as for Ireland, in the euros the midfield made the effort in making space and creating options, it's simply down to the way we set up and play last season, which we know was a problem. Saying that I don't think he's consistent in his performances, is suspect of many basic mistakes and can get caught out of position but I don't think that is any different to anyone else in our squad from last season. As for Whitbread, fantastic signing, providing he remains fit he's certainly a good solid defender with the experience to go with it, remember watching him for Milwall and threw himself in a lot to make list ditch tackles and blocks, winning the ball comfortably. Would certainly feel more confident with him coming in, positive signs, reinforces the trust most fans have in NP.
ARM1968 Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Whitbread is a great signing. Very happy with this. If he stays off the injury table then we'll have a bargain.

Always very composed and looks to pass to midfielders feet a large percentage of the time so don't know where you've got that from.

Ireland are a poor nation, as demonstrated by the fact that St Ledger is a regular starter for them. He chose to play for Ireland because he'd never get into the English set-up, and if there was any decent Irish CBs then he wouldn't get near that either. I like SSL as a guy, he seems like a great character, but I can't see him forming a partnership that's capable of making it to the play-offs. If Whitbread stays fit then it'll be him and Morgan for pretty much all of the season, and I don't think SSL will play much at all. He may be the 2nd choice RB as he has done alright for us there, but apart from that, he'll be stuck on the subs bench I'd expect.
Out Foxed Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 I think he means Whitbread there mate i believe he's referring to st ledger. the full stop signifies the end of that sentence and then he talks about whitbread.

hornyhollthefox123 Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Yes I'm well aware Bamba and Mills are gone. Just SSL played with them and so its easier to draw comparison. I'm hardly going to compare SSL heading to Whitbread when they haven't played alongside one another. Anyway, very decent signing, I think we've almost now got a good, well rounded squad.
chris_lcfc_85 Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 What a difference a year makes. This time last year we spent nearly 5m on Mills, then a year on, we are set to sign Whitbread for free! Whitbread is arguably better as well! With him, big Wes and SSL, i think we will be ok Lets not forget, De Laet played at centre back with Whitbread in the prem for Norwich so we have cover there too
Happy Fox Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 Leicester City â€@OfficialFOXES Zak Whitbread becomes Nigel Pearson’s fifth summer signing, joining the Foxes on a two year deal. Story to follow shortly… #lcfc
Happy Fox Posted 24 July 2012 Posted 24 July 2012 http://www.lcfc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10274~2857988,00.html Leicester City have today (Monday) completed the signing of defender Zak Whitbread on a contract until June 2014. Zak, 28, joins the Foxes following the expiration of his contract with Premier League club Norwich City, with whom he spent two-and-a-half seasons and won successive promotions to the top flight. The former Liverpool and Millwall centre-back becomes Nigel Pearson's fifth new signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Ritchie De Laet, Matty James, Jamie Vardy and Marko Futacs. City manager Nigel Pearson said: "Zak is a player of great quality that will add a huge amount of experience to the squad; I'm delighted we've been able to bring him here. "He will be a great character to have as part of the group and, having only won promotion from the Championship a little over a year ago with Norwich, he knows exactly what it takes to get out of this division. "We're really pleased with the business we have been able to do so far this summer, we have made some valuable additions to the squad and Zak certainly falls into that category." Born in Houston, Texas before relocating to England at a young age, Zak is a graduate of the Liverpool academy and joined the Reds' first team squad in 2003. Later that year, he was called up to the USA squad for the FIFA World Youth Championships. When opportunities were presented to him during his time as a pro on Merseyside, Whitbread invariably seized them with some outstanding performances both in the Carling Cup and in qualification for the Champions League. A loan move to Millwall in November 2005 offered Zak the chance to play regular first team football and he made 27 appearances for the Lions before making the move permanent the following summer. He spent a further three-and-a-half years at the Den, making nearly 100 appearances. He moved to Norwich, then chasing promotion from League 1, in January 2010 and played his part in securing back-to-back promotions for the Canaries - particularly coming to the fore during the second half of their ascent out of the Championship in 2011. He also featured as a starter upon Norwich's return to the Premier League last term and went on to make 21 appearances in the top flight. Zak joined the Leicester City squad for training on Monday but, due to his later start to pre-season training, is not expected to feature in Tuesday night's friendly at Hinckley United.
