Guest MattP Posted 25 July 2012 Posted 25 July 2012 That shows how much people actually care about womens football. Or how stupid some are when it comes to Geography?
Jordan Posted 25 July 2012 Posted 25 July 2012 Or how stupid some are when it comes to Geography? I think he was referring to the "crowd" in the photo. I think Queen's Park get bigger attendances than what we've seen at Hampden today. To be fair to the organizers, the Olympics are supposed to be a grand event, and hosting games at some of the U.K.'s most famous stadia (and the Ricoh ) is all a part of that. I'd doubt it would have helped the London bid if they said they were going to have football played in Glasgow but play them at Firhill. But I'd also say it would have made far, far more sense to play football at the new Cardiff City Stadium instead of 50,000 empty seats at the Millenium Stadium.
Vacamion Posted 25 July 2012 Posted 25 July 2012 I think its deliciously ironic that in Scotland of all places, a poverty stricken northern half of a country governed by a small fat dictator takes umbrage at being mistaken for their richer, healthier southern neighbours...
Rincewind Posted 25 July 2012 Posted 25 July 2012 Just started a thread in GC. But changing it by asking for any other flag mix ups that could cause embarrassment.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 25 July 2012 Posted 25 July 2012 Watched it. A bit slow, but enjoyable nevertheless. Crap turnout at Millennium Stadium. I wonder what the prices were?
Vacamion Posted 25 July 2012 Posted 25 July 2012 Hampden was £40 a ticket. I live fairly near, but for anything more than £10 each, they can stick it and I'll watch it on telly, thanks...

Ticket prices are too high and the venues used are too big. Just my view.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 July 2012 Posted 26 July 2012 Theres a sure fire way to increase attendence at the women's football. Leave the sprinklers on.

Vacamion Posted 26 July 2012 Posted 26 July 2012 Apologies - I was misinformed, they start at £20 at Hampden, but it is £30 for the middling and £40 for the decent seats. Either way, not worth it for two people to watch Honduras -v- Morocco... if they want to fill the ground, they need to price the product properly.
Guest Bilo Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 2-0 Great Britain v Cameroon after 23 minutes. Brilliantly worked second.
purpleronnie Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 fans are making more noise than the 70,000 fans at old trafford for the mens game.
Vacamion Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 The co-commentator sounds more Yorkshire than a fat single mother with a whippet and a white rose drinking a cup of milky tea down a coal mine...
Corky Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 The co-commentator sounds more Yorkshire than a fat single mother with a whippet and a white rose drinking a cup of milky tea down a coal mine... T'his.
Rincewind Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 I think they go off for a cuppa at half time. There is no half time anlysis by studio experts. The camerman has left the camera set on distance and also gone for a cuppa or a pastie and pint.
Jordan Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 USA just made it 3-0 vs. Colombia late in the 2nd; our girls are just having fun now. Megan Rapinoe just got subbed after a woman-of-the-match performance. I didn't catch the GB-Cameroon game, but it seemed like a very solid performance from your side. The group stage finale vs. Brazil might not matter a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, will it be a good barometer to measure just how good GB are.
DJMadness29 Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 Anyone else noticed the poor refereeing in the GB games?? Theres been some rediculous challenges going in, in both the mens and womens matches that go unpunihed.

Can't see anything but the yanks winning gold.
Toffee_Fox Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 Well in girls, family member and a few good mates play for them, absolutely chuffed. Tickets sorted for Wembley, 75k sold already, wow.
Jordan Posted 28 July 2012 Posted 28 July 2012 Can't see anything but the yanks winning gold. There is a lot of work still to be done--particularly in defense. Colombia, to put it nicely, aren't very good. But going back to the previous game, the defending on France's two early goals was awful. Rampone and Buehler got beaten so many times by Delie and Thiney in that game, and if they play like that against forwards that are half-decent, the U.S. will be in trouble again. Also, the team's approach at the end of that game was far too reckless. When you're up 4-2, a fifth goal would be nice, but going all out to get it isn't the best approach. They were sending wing backs up to attack, and their center backs forward on free kicks and corners. As a result, they were burned time and time again on the counterattack, and France would have made the end of that game very interesting if not for woeful finishing. How does a team with a 2-goal lead get caught several times in the last few minutes by counterattacks? That should never happen. Midway through the second half, the French team looked exhausted and were all but defeated. But the U.S. essentially gave France a second wind. We've seen this before--in the 2011 WWC final vs Japan, the U.S. had the majority of possession and chances, but blew two late leads because of sloppy defending, and lost on penalties. Brandi Chastain, calling the games along with Arlo White for NBC here, was saying during the France game how perplexed she was with the U.S.' approach at the end. She said while the team's character lends itself towards all-out attack, there comes a time when a team needs to be more sensible and cautious about defending--an honest, fair assessment. Yet today, GK Hope Solo--who hasn't exactly been on the best form--ripped Chastain on twitter, saying she's out of touch with the game today (I don't see that at all) and that she "should B helping grow sport" (no, her job is to provide analysis and commentary). This team is still smarting over the loss to Japan last year, and that's given them extra motivation to win gold this year. But I really hope Solo is the only player that's taking offense to some pretty innocuous criticism, because if the rest of the team feels that way, then maybe they're not really mentally prepared to be champions. Fortunately, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan--the classic 4-4-2 size and strength + speed and skill striker combo--are in fine form, Rapinoe is dominating whatever wing she's playing on, and the midfield has loads of depth. I'd hope Pia Sundhage can fix any issues with the back line before the knock-out rounds. I would certainly say the U.S. are the favorites, but Japan, Brazil and Sweden are all capable of beating the U.S. and I wouldn't put the gold medals around our girls' necks just yet. Phew. This is the most I've ever written about women's soccer since I covered my college's varsity team for the school newspaper over 10 years ago.
marko Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 1-0 up against Brazil after 2 minutes! Excellent start.
Guest Bilo Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Massive crowd as well, I do believe it's a world record for women's football. A successful tournament could be huge for the women's game in this country.
