THEFATBASTARD Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Just seen on the news ,they are digging a car park up in the middle of Leicester looking for the remains of king Richard 111...so thats why you can't find anywhere to park. Looks like money well spent and certainly not a complete waste of time, got to love these university history "experts". If they do find him though ,I will be happy to shell out for a full state funeral.
Captain... Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Blimey we had 111 kings called Richard, that is impressive...
Bellend Sebastian Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 It's the Greyfriars car park which is owned by the council and as far as I know has never been open to the public anyway. Is this the old argument of if you cannot eat, make money from or have a wank over something then it's of no value? Personally I'm very excited at the prospect of a major historical figure being exhumed just down the road. So much so that I'm hoping that they'll let me have the remains once they've finished mucking about with them. Richard the third in my lounge! Just imagine
ithuriel Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Just seen on SkyNews they are doing an archaeological dig in Leicester looking for the remains of the dead king.
Cat Burger Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 To have his resting place desecrated!? That would give him the hump.
ithuriel Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Well, they are looking under a car park, the first traffic hump maybe
Rincewind Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 There are a few plans to renovate Leicester and do it up. The ideas are available online and the public canvoice their opinions about the proposals. They are also planning to re-open the castle to the public.
Wycombe Fox Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I was intrigued by the mention of DNA testing. Do they have any DNA from any relatives against which to test/compare?
davieG Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/King-buried-Leicester-car-park-Dig-search-Richard/story-16759993-detail/story.html If they discover bones, they will also look for signs of a violent death and have traced an all-female line of descent from Richard III's sister to a present-day Canadian family, making it possible to test DNA.
Webbo Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I really can't understand anybody complaining about this, especially over cost. Not only will it increase historical knowledge but, if they find the body, Leicester will be on TV all over the world. It can only be good for the city.

Webbo Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I always thought his body was supposedly thrown into the river off West Bridge.

Agreed its like those idiots who moan about aquiring some incredible historical artifact for millions of pounds...'they could have built a hospital with that'...blah blah blah....go and live in a hole then if you dont want any culture in your life.
davieG Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 Leicester has ignored, buried, built over massive amounts of it's history, if we'd only kept a portion of the Roman remains rather than burying or building on them we could be competing with the likes of York as an ancient Roman City instead we're thought of as bland and without significance. I bet there's lots of Leicester people who know little or nothing about it's historical past well except Daniel Lambert and the Elephant Man/John Merrick.
Rincewind Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 On Saturday there is a performance of Richard lll at the Jewry wall. There are also one or two other guided walks, ghost walks tour of the castle ans a sleep over at a haunted venue. Is it a Bank Holiday or something?

Couldn't agree more Davie, the delay to te shires due to the pure wealth of artifacts is just one example. I love Ratae.
Wycombe Fox Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 http://www.thisislei...tail/story.html Thanks DavieG

davieG Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 A parking space, a parking space - my Kingdom for a parking space ?? The decline started when they demolished all those multi-story stables and introduced on the spot fines for horse droppings, the attempt to introduce recycling horse shit as manure failed when they discovered that terraced housing didn't not have back gardens, yet again another cock up by Marcus Aemilius Africanus (Peter Soulsby - source)
Bellend Sebastian Posted 24 August 2012 Posted 24 August 2012 I think it's terrible. I love that car park. When I was a nipper it was where we would park when going into town, to for example, buy a Star Wars figure from the toy department of the Co-op on the High Street. It's f***** sacrilege, is what it is
