Parafox Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 My uncle has had an apple tree in his garden for over 30 years and every year it has produced loads of fruit. He never really did anything to the tree as in pruning etc, it just flourished for 30 years. Sadly he died last November and this year we haven't had one single apple appear on his tree, not even a tiny start of one, none on the ground that may've fallen off... no fruit at all. How peculiar. Has anyone else experienced anything similar, I wonder. Is there some explanation? Just seems very odd.
davieG Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 We've got a couple of apple trees and only one of them havs fruit on it we also have a pear, plum and damson that haven't got any and they usually do. I'm presuming it was the shocking weather we had earlier in the year, heavy persistent rain and wind that knocked out all the blossom before it had a chance to develop. I'm no expert though.
Uncle Phil Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 That is a little odd, although most apple trees only produce fruit for up to 35 years or so and lose vigor if they aren't maintained. Also, this year is a terrible year for fruit trees in general, the mild winter meant that they don't get the cold spell they need to end their dormancy combined with early blossom being damaged by frost.
Tielemans63 Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 Here's another weird thing. My wife's mum has a half sister and a full sister who has lived in Australia for 22 years. She had only ever met her half sister 2 or 3 times (it's a long story) and her full sister only comes over from Aus once in a blue moon. Anyways we were at a family wedding a couple of months ago and they were all together in the room for the first time ever and weirdly they were all wearing exactly the same pair of glasses and exactly the same dress, despite not having consulted each other about the outfits. It was proper well weird mate.
Fox92 Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 There are many weird things that happen. Your example of your uncle's death resulting in no fruit is one of them. I really don't know what to say, it is interesting.
sphericalfox Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 If you check the leaves and if they have black(ish) spots on them, it'll be a fungal infection (believe it or not). Make sure that the leaves, when they fall are raked up and destroyed, or binned, otherwise it'll come back again. The pear tree in my garden had precisely this problem and produced zero fruits this year. Too much shitting rain.
Tielemans63 Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 Too much shitting rain. That's definitely my least favourite kind of rain.
Zingari Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 and the clock stopped........., never to go again, when the old man, died.
Parafox Posted 13 September 2012 Author Posted 13 September 2012 and the clock stopped........., never to go again, when the old man, died. Yeah, that's exactly how it feels
Captain... Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 As someone once said million to one chances happen more often than you think. I am more open to some on here to the spiritual side of things, but this is most likely a coincidence, even without the fact that it has been a terrible summer for fruit.

I know what you're saying, and the others that have made the same observation, indeed I'm not one for spiritualism per se, but we've had more than one bad summer (not as bad as this year) in the last 35 years but the tree has always produced fruit. This year not a single thing. We have fruit trees that have suffered in the weather but still have apples and pears on them.

I have two apples trees immediate next to my pear tree, yet it got struck down. The other two trees produced loads of apples. Polluted by shitty worms, but apples nonetheless. Check the leaves, and you'll have the answer.
AyewJoking Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 couple of years back my wife and i were out shopping and all of a sudden she felt sick. she had to go outside and vomit in the gutter. anyway we got home 20 minutes later and her brother texted her to tell her her father had died (in Jamaica).

Polluted by shitty worms, but apples nonetheless. Check the leaves, and you'll have the answer. I will. He was a widower and there was just him living in the house. Just seems everything stopped after he passed away. He had long term illnesses but always lived in his own house until he died. He wasn't able to look after his garden in the latter and we didn't have the time to do any work except put a few flowering plants in but it never looked untidy. After his death the garden has become overrun with weeds and looks a mess even though it hasn't had any less work done on it that any other recent years. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Just FEELS strange. Almost as if the house/garden is mourning.
Jaspa Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 Maybe he did certain things to the tree every year that no-one knew about ? If hes coming back to make sure a tree doesnt produce some apples he would be a very strange man, or if the tree is mourning him ? Fkin weird
Rocket-Ron Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 I have tons of apples this year. Only one pear (1 not 2) from two trees. And the plumbs are rotting on the tree. No jam this year
Bryn Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 I would imagine it's a coincidence, but it's certainly a very poignant one. Nothing wrong with looking for patterns in life.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 You know when you say to someone 'have you been working out?' and they're like nahhh I just look like this when really they've been killing themselves in the gym for months? Well maybe your grandad was secretly a bit of a greenthumb but enjoyed keeping it quiet and amazing people with his apparently wild apples.

Trust me, he could barely get out of his chair. He had bronchiectasis which is extremely debilitating.

acooling08 Posted 13 September 2012 Posted 13 September 2012 It's just the terrible weather coinciding with his death. There's an apple tree that overhangs our garden and has dropped countless apples for as long as I can remember. This year though it hasn't produced any at all. Actually kind of glad because we don't eat them, so we have to clear them all otherwise they rot and attract endless wasps.
