Joey Barton get's a touch of the "McClaren's"

There are plenty of perfectly intelligent footballers. They're just normal people. Some are smart, some are thick, some are chavs, some aren't. Just because the Rooneys of this world grab the headlines, it doesn't mean they're all knuckledraggers who can't hold down a reasonable conversation on politics or current affairs.

Barton isn't intelligent at all, he's a complete ****ing ape. Being able to copy and paste the odd bit of GCSE philosophy might impress the odd fifteen year old FIFA addict but I don't think anyone's really all that fooled by the tit.

That said, if this was done deliberately to take the piss out of Shteve then it is amusing enough.

But but, but but he knows all about Nietzsche, he must be a tormented genius!

Clarke Carlisle is an intelligent man.

I can't see Barton appearing on Question Time.

If Dimbleby interrupted him, he would stub a cigar out on his face....

1) Do something in a pretentious manner.

2) Get called out for it.

3) Decide retroactively that 1) was a wind-up upon being called out for being a dick.

4) Call everyone stupid for not knowing that 1) was a wind-up all along.

Typical Barton.

Anyone else really respect Barton despite all the madness he produces sometimes?

I actually like the bloke so few characters in the game these days, everyone can't wait critise everyone for the slightest wrong doing. Good to see someone who wears his heart on his sleave and says what he thinks without having to be PC.

I don't mind a bit of Barton, can be a nob but he's a character and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. I am of the honest opinion he is more naturally intelligent than many footballers (but not the most intelligent by a long way) however his upbringing hasn't really done him any favours.

Wind up or not it still made me laugh.

Exactly what I thought.

respect a thug? ok....

He has anger issues probably. But I don't think he is just your standard thug, because of who he is people like to have a pop when they meet him in real life...and he is probably poor at dealing with people like that.

Spot on. Poor effort at trying to salvage the situation really.

Chateaux neuf de pap! (To quote Del Boy)

What a bellend this guy really is! Even worse than him are the people that bum him in twitter for his amazing "banter"

I realise it's not a tough competition, but I can't name a more intelligent footballer. Interesting interviews (when hes not putting on a french accent :P ) , doesn't give the same stock boring answers. Knows his music, knows his philosophers, was really good on that gay footballers documentary as well. I know I SHOULD dislike him...but he interests me.

you think Barton is the most intelligent footballer?

If you prefer a type of music you would probably know a bit about it, why does this make him intelligent?

Does he happen to like the same music as you?

Haha why yes he does. He does know a lot about old music though, seems generally knowledgeable about a lot of subjects. I know you can't like Barton without getting stick but I would rather hear his opinion than people like St Ledger. Always has something interesting to say. Newsnight had him on so obviously the BBC agree.

He interests me as well, not because he's 'intelligent', but because I'm interested how someone can be such a cvnt yet somehow view themselves in the way he does lol
