It is considered unlucky to have any Christmas decorations up or lights on after the 12th day. In the song, the "true love" brings a gift a day for twelve days. Then it's all over. No more gifts. Probably run out of money. All those geese, swans, drummers and gold rings must've cost a fortune. We are currently in Advent. I have the calendar to prove it. Edited following FIF's post to make myself look clever.
