21st Century Fox Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Welcome to the Guardian's choice of the world's top 100 footballers. We asked our 11-strong international panel of experts to name their top 30 players in action today and rank them in order of preference. Once the lists were submitted, the players were scored on their ranking by each panellist: a No1 choice allocated 30pts, No2 29pts and so on down to selection No30, given one point. In a four-part series online and in print we will reveal the results http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/interactive/2012/dec/20/top-100-footballers-in-the-world-interactive Discuss...

AKCJ Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 RVP is the best player in the Premier League? No, not for me.
Guest ttfn Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 The system they've used to get to the final list is bonkers.
Alexikokopops Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 The system they've used to get to the final list is bonkers. Could have been worst - they could have let the public decide.
AKCJ Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Neymar and Busquets are above Kompany and that's a bit silly.
Guest ttfn Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 And call me a philistine, but Rooney is way too far down that list (at 31).
Guest ttfn Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Could have been worst - they could have let the public decide. As they famously did for their best XI ever. Stevie G squeaked in! It's more the "top 30" for each journo that just seems maddeningly arbitrary and also gives disproportionate weight to one journalist's nonsensical bias. I'd bet my bottom dollar that the only person who voted for Emmanuel Mayuka was Jonathan Wilson. I used to really like him but he's disappeared up his own arse (Wilson) lately with his "goals are overrated" spiel.
Fox92 Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Still stand by my opinion that Schweinsteiger is the best midfielder in the World. Everytime I watch him play, he is so cool on the ball.

I'd bet my bottom dollar that the only person who voted for Emmanuel Mayuka was Jonathan Wilson. I used to really like him but he's disappeared up his own arse (Wilson) lately with his "goals are overrated" spiel. I agree in principle with the system (largely because I struggle to think of a better one) but agree that 30 is an arbitrary number to begin with. That said, in theory you can be a lot more thoughtful about a smaller number - I can't see many people thinking too much about the merits of number 64 over number 65 in their own list for instance. However you're right about the fact that, in the lower reaches at least, you can get players slipping in because only one person has gone for them. Those higher up should be better though and, if you're anything like me, you can never be bothered to read more than the top 20 anyway Oh, and I agree with you about Wilson. He can write some really interesting stuff but I know what you mean about him at least appearing to be up his own arse. Still, I'd rather that than a lot of the banal crap you usually get with football coverage.
Fox92 Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 As they famously did for their best XI ever. Stevie G squeaked in! But that was best Premier League team ever though, wasn't it? In which I agreed with Stevie getting in.
Guest Bilo Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 No Englishman in the top 25 players is nothing short of depressing.
AKCJ Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 What would be your world XI? Neuer Hummels Kompany Ramos Mata Schweinsteiger Alonso Xavi Iniesta Messi Ronaldo No Englishman in the top 25 players is nothing short of depressing. and also nothing short of a wake up call. People think Rooney and the like are world class, but really, they've very over rated. Look yesterday, Rooney's pass completion rate was 12%. Shocking.
foxfanazer Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Juan Mata best player in the prem for me. 100% agree. Superb footballer. Hazard has the potential to be the best in the world in a few years
Guest ttfn Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 But that was best Premier League team ever though, wasn't it? In which I agreed with Stevie getting in. No, it was best ever XI. I can't link as I'm on my phone but the team was: Schmeichel Cafu Baresi Beckenbauer Maldini Gerrard Maradona Zidane Cruyff Pele Ronaldo
kingfox Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 WTF is this shit. Balotelli higher than the likes of Cazorla and Modric, Wanyama higher than the likes of Hulk and Sneijder. Top 20 is also awful, Busquets better than Alonso
leicesterisme Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 WTF is this shit. Balotelli higher than the likes of Cazorla and Modric, Wanyama higher than the likes of Hulk and Sneijder. Top 20 is also awful, Busquets better than Alonso He certainly isn't far off.
Zingari Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Have they got Joe Hart as second best goalkeeper in the world?
AKCJ Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Have they got Joe Hart as second best goalkeeper in the world? He's down in 65th place. Casillas, Buffon, Neuer and Cech all better. They're the only keepers on the list.
Guest Bilo Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Busquets is an absolute nipple, but is very underrated as a player too. No real surprise to see Ashley Cole as best English player either, probably the only English player who could be seen as anywhere near the best in his position. He's an outstanding left-back.
Haydos Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 However much of a **** Busquets is, I'd rate him as one of the top deeper lying midfielders in the world, alongside Alonso and Schweinsteiger.
Swarles Barkley Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Balotelli at 67 is ridiculous. So overrated its unbelievable
Haydos Posted 24 December 2012 Posted 24 December 2012 Balotelli at 67 is ridiculous. So overrated its unbelievable Agreed, Balotelli shouldn't be near this list.
