Holidays 2013

This site is a good start: http://www.raileurop...t.aspx?tabid=39

Back in the pre-internet days (showing my age), the Thomas Cook Rail timetables were THE Inter-Rail bible & they're still published: http://www.amazon.co..._sl_pp895u4g5_b Could still be useful, though the Summer 2013 one only comes out on 1st June. For getting a general idea, though, could be worth looking at the old one in the library, if the internet info isn't good enough

Depending on your budget, couchettes are a good idea for overnight journeys - cheaper than a bed for the night, half-decent sleep and cover ground overnight. I've used them in recent years for Paris-Madrid; Madrid-Lisbon, Brussels-Hamburg & Berlin-Brussels. If your budget is very tight and you're reduced to sleeping on train seats overnight, I recommend looking scruffy & unshaven with a bottle of wine prominently displayed so you get 2-3 seats to yourself and can lie down!

Accommodation: could be worth taking out YHA membership - though Backpackers are fairly widespread in some places

A great adventure....have fun!

Thank you! I think i'll definitely look out for the timetable, not going til late July I don't think so plenty of time to get it sorted etc.

Just out of interest, where did you go/ what country did you start in etc? We've got a very good idea of where we want to go just need to make it work..

A great website is the Man in Seat 61 (I'd link but I'm on my phone and I'm a very lazy man). It's done by a guy who used to work on the railways and now runs the website full time. You can use it when planning to get from London to anywhere or just around countries. I recently used it to help me book sleeper trains in Ukraine and it tends to be my first port of call for general information (rather than specific time tabling, although it gives you links to the relevant places). It might help if you just want to see where it's actually possible to go.

Well I knew I was going Greece this year but it's official. Going in May for 2 weeks, staying at my friends house, in Athens. Should be good times. It would be better if I do well in my end of year exams.. here's hoping!

I'm off Protaras in August for 2 weeks, a friend is getting married there on my 2nd week.

Can't bloody wait.

I'm going there at the end of July for two weeks. Love the place, this will be my 3rd time In 4 years that I've been.

First lads holiday going to either Magaluf, Zante or Malia. I've looked at the prices and Magaluf is so much cheaper, but the others are said to be better. Anyone recommend any of the 3 against the others listed?

Malia overated and a lot more expensive, Zante is where I went for my first lads holiday 5 years ago, absolutely brilliant, will go back again. Not been Magaluf but heard good things, seems to be for an older crowd.

I know the TV programmes didn't make it look good but Kavos is absolutely brilliant, been 2 times and have been amazing lads holidays.

All depends on how much you want to spend and what you're after pal?

I'm going on the 21st July leave on the 4th August. I'm staying in the Odessa aswell it's a lovely hotel right on the beach.

The nightlife in Protoras is alright plenty of bars and a couple of night clubs. But you are only a 15 minute bus ride into Ayia Napa.

Ha really? So it's all ok for 4 lads? Looks a real nice hotel to be fair. Glad there is nightlife there, too old to be going out in Ayia Napa every night.

Yeah you and your friends will be fine. Plenty of bar and most of them stay open till 2-3 in the morning.

Yeah it's a lovely hotel stayed there last year and didn't hesitate to book it again this year.

Cheers thanks for the information, last question, whats the food like?

In the hotel or restaraunts?

The food in the hotel was spot on last year. We were staying half board and there was plenty of option. Mainly buffet food but still really nice.

Restaraunts in protoras are a plenty. Even though we were half board we mainly went out at night for dinner. All very reasonabley priced as well.

There's a steak house on the strip me and the mrs had a starter each, a main each, 2 glasses of wine and 2 bottles of Keo and it came to just over €30. I'm quite fussy about steak but its one of the best I've ever had.

There's a McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC also on the strip.

My sister got married near there, I thought it was pretty bleak, never particulary liked cyprus, and the food...well I reckon I got food poisioning, all in all it was great!. Ayia Napa is a shit hole....not that it matters though I guess.

Bloody New zealand, pissed it down and ruined the cricket.

I know when I turned it on last night I thought wtf.

Melbourne looks great though, 30+, just hope Auckland has better weather than it's having at the minute.

Too hot for me, I'd be like a strip of bacon within a day.

I remember houston was just plain silly, you could barely function it was so hot, sweating all the time, saps your strength, needed shit loads of bottled water everyday I swear I spent more time in the bathroom than anywhere else, add the smog and the continuous skin cancer warnings it became a nightmare.

Although I wouldnt mine the odd day like it over here. :D

I love it, can't get enough.

Remember being sat in the Grand Canyon and it was about 47/48. Glass of champagne with a woman I loved looking over the incredible scenery, absolutely perfect.

I hardly even wear suncream but I'm fairly dark anyway. My nickname isn't 'the turk' for no reason.

Been Zante and Maga, I personally preferred Maga. Bigger strip, bigger clubs and a lot nicer beach and activities to do during the day etc. Plus its a shorter flight lol

Wherever you go, you will have a great time. Lads holidays are amazing!

Only done megamuff out of the 3 but i actually like it. If you can get a hotel in torre nova i think it is. The headland between magaluf and palma nova it's handy. Like the other guy said theres plenty to do in the day if you want too.
