ozleicester Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 As someone who is clinically diagnosed with and subsequently on medication for depression I guess I have a bit of an insight into the illness. Did I get fat, give up on my career and forget my responsibilities? Nope, I got help. Depression is an illness and not an excuse. Amazed that someone diagnosed with the illness has no respect or support for another (possibly) in a similar boat. All illness's are not the same and the effects and results differ.

Of course this is hypothetical as no one actually knows if he even has depression. However if that is the reason, what a monumental waste in the face of something treatable.

He initially declined to say any more but rang us back, revealing: “I have been attending the Priory Clinic for a number of years now with regard to my mental health and would be grateful if I could now be left alone to live the rest of my life.†I think we have been through this before Mack, but each case is different. My Mrs and my cousin have both been treated for depression, but the two cases are so far apart to presume what works for one works for the others is just wrong.
Captain... Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 Does this thread keep moving or am I going mad?

Mack Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 He initially declined to say any more but rang us back, revealing: “I have been attending the Priory Clinic for a number of years now with regard to my mental health and would be grateful if I could now be left alone to live the rest of my life.†I think we have been through this before Mack, but each case is different. My Mrs and my cousin have both been treated for depression, but the two cases are so far apart to presume what works for one works for the others is just wrong. I am not presuming anything. All I was saying is that it's a massive waste to piss away such a fantastic life opportunity in the name of mental health. However I guess he has so much money that curling up in a ball and pulling the curtains is possible, whereas for us who have mortgages, bills, responsibilities, kids etc that's not an option. Well it is I suppose, but it would be a pretty self centered choice.
Jordan Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 If Michael Johnson has been receiving treatment at Priory Clinic, it's most likely for a good reason. Johnson is also well within bounds to declare this a private matter. I don't understand why so many insist on becoming amateur psychologists all of a sudden when all we know is that Johnson was a promising talent, got injured often, added a lot of weight, and has a tendency to drink. Without trying to sound like a know it all, for those that do insist on diagnosing Johnson's condition, it is perhaps worth nothing that major depression is often co-morbid with other conditions. Also, weight gain is a side effect of some popularly prescribed antidepressant/anti-psychotic drugs. Now, I'm just throwing this out there as devil's advocate to show just two reasons why this may not just be a matter of what Mack is saying, or that the weight gain is all about Johnson being drunk, gluttonous and lazy. But those are just two of myriad reasons why Johnson could be where he is now, so again, trying to diagnose his illnesses and problems is useless when we don't even know half of his situation.

Just because you can handle your situation you assume everyone elses is the same and they should be able to handle theirs?
21st Century Fox Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 Does this thread keep moving or am I going mad? With the level of mental health understanding being shown in this thread you could well be.
Jace Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 I sympathise with the guy and hope he over comes his demons but if he had problems then he really shouldn't of turned up and ripped off a Championship football club like us for so much money

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 16 January 2013 Posted 16 January 2013 Couldn't agree with Jordan more - it's very hard to sympathise, or be angered, at Johnson's decline considering know one truly knows the mechanics and details behind his situation. I'm ambivalent towards the whole thing in honesty, though my primary reaction was sadness about just what a talent has been lost, whatever the circumstances.
