_Fatboyslow_ Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 Just when I was going to raise some basic issues the thread turns to mush
MooseBreath Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 The difference I can see is that most right-wingers see material wealth as the basis of pretty much all success, whereas lefties tend to look to life experiences and the immaterial for their success. Give me a break Life experience is exactly what turns a lefty into a righty. If you're still a lefty past the age of 25 then you haven't experienced enough, simple as that really. If by "see material wealth as the basis of all success" you mean "recognises that freedom of choice does not come for free" then I agree with that bit.

Element of truth to that, I was very left wing in my late teens and started to change in my mid 20's when I started to travel the World.
purpleronnie Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 Element of truth to that, I was very left wing in my late teens and started to change in my mid 20's when I started to travel the World. I've travelled the world and lived in different countries and its made me more left than I was previously. Maybe we just went to different places. And if Mr wolf has had more life experience than me then either he's lying or he's david attenborough.

Unfortunately this is true - by the age of 25 most people realise that life is short and only you can help yourself so shit on everyone else to get what you want.
MC Prussian Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 I'm neither a proper leftie nor a proper right-winger, does that make me a traitor? Although I do admit, in many cases I tend to support a more left-wing policy. Good question for the Questions Thread, I might add.
Babylon Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 Is there a test to see how left/right I am... or is as simple as Left - I would want to live in a hippie commune. Right - I would have a poster of Hitler on my wall.

Right - I would have a poster of Hitler on my wall. The face of John Major on a poster of Justin Bieber's body would suffice, I presume. Hitler's one for the helpless, poor and deluded on the far right.

You lived in Texas, I'd imagine a lefty there would still be further right than a Republican in San Francisco.
MC Prussian Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 You lived in Texas, I'd imagine a lefty there would still be further right than a Republican in San Francisco. You forget Austin. Austin's mad. Probably madder than anything you'll ever see on the West Coast (including Portland and Seattle).
Guest MattP Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 You forget Austin. Austin's mad. Probably madder than anything you'll ever see on the West Coast (including Portland and Seattle). Always wanted to go there, spent some time in Dallas and Fort Worth but I was only around for a day or two. When I think of Seattle I just imagine huge fish markets.

If by "see material wealth as the basis of all success" you mean "recognises that freedom of choice does not come for free" then I agree with that bit. Yeah, should have just left it at materialism and immaterialism there. Wouldn't you agree that right-wing philosophy is largely based on self-interest and acquiring material wealth though? I'm not saying that's a bad thing - I'm just wondering how much truth there is to it. 'Freedom of choice does not come for free' is more an authoritarian idea? Element of truth to that, I was very left wing in my late teens and started to change in my mid 20's when I started to travel the World. I've done a lot of travelling and lived in a few different places. Now I veer left-wing on some issues, right-wing on others. Like I said before, it's too complex an issue to totally pigeonhole. I do think travelling broadens the mind though.

When I think of Seattle I just imagine huge fish markets. never really had the chance to spend much time in the pacific north west, managed to look around a bit but not enough to really grasp what its like plus it rained all the time I was there which didnt help, its got a rep of being a little too hipster, but I wouldnt mind seeing a football game amongst the timbers army.

Finnegan Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 You're right, just dont want to see you ending up down the Daggers route. Dave is an absolutely lovely bloke and the couple of times I've met him he's been exceptionally polite and welcoming to everyone. I don't think the like of Moose, floww and co' can take any moral high ground in regards some of the more abusive posts he's made on here. Both sides reap what they so, the same can be said of Nick. But any slur on his intelligence is just ill informed. Along with Lisa, Fez and others he's one of several that used to partake in extremely lengthy and well thought out debates on FT, historically, but whom just don't have the interest anymore. Truth be told I don't think I do all that much nowdays either.
MC Prussian Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 So your neutral. Deep shock. I'm an extremist Neutral. Very dangerous. Could go either waaaaaay.

I only bother with the lengthy debates when the standard of debate calls for it, and that's clearly how a number of people feel.
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 April 2013 Posted 10 April 2013 I like Dave, he's alright. Extremly good taste in glasses as well. I must admit if I was only going off his posts on here in the last three years I'd think he's an absloute Cock Badger in the defence of others.

I used to come on here occasionally in about 06 - 08 and just saw a vomit-inducing group of aging hippies discussing laughably naive ideas which most people grow out of by the time they become 16 years old. It really was pathetic. Hence I only started posting when a few more sane people cane onto the scene and that's when daggers got angry. He had his 'ideas' so well and truly torn apart that he resorted to childish abuse. Neither him nor nick post anymore because they know full well they can't compete and would just wind up being embarrased. Hence all we're left with is daggers taking pot shots from the sidelines while offering no substantiation at all.

Im not even talking politics any more, I'm talking depth of thinking and broad-mindedness. If you honestly think the standard of debate and discussion on politics has improved on here over the past couple of years, I'd suggest having a lie down.

Like Manwell says though, if you only read what he has put over the last year or so, you can only have one opinion of the guy.
