Safety Awareness Course for Speeding.

If there is a place near you where you can take it, why not go for the first option? Another £40 (and four hours of your life) but no points which surely is the main thing?

Go on the course, they are very good and certainly not as boring as you might imagine plus it's much better to not have the points. It's a no brainer if you can take the no point option.

Depends really on what the actual cost is, if I had to take a day off work to do it I wouldn't as it would cost me a hell of a lot more than £30.

I also have a clean license, so 3 points vs 0 points is no drama, if I already had 6 or 9 points on my license I would probably reconsider.

A mate of mine did the course after an accident and said it was ok, and he definitely improved as a driver, again it depends if you are a shit driver and would benefit from it, or it was a genuine one off mistake, that will never happen again.

My MD went on one,he Said it was hilarious, not because of the content of the awareness course, but 2 people on it were so thick even th bloke taking the course was losing it.

Think they were talking about the Highway Code and how you should keep upto date,he decided on a little fun role play and asked if there were any gamblers in the room. One of the guys said " yes" The guy taking it said" we will have a game of cards for £10, I'm not going to tell you the rules( eg Highway Code changes) do you still want to bet?" This guy said "yes" when the bloke said he was meant to say no as he Didnt know the rules, and that was the point. He said he was a fast learner!then this other guy chipped in and said he would fancy a bet too.My boss said he was crying with laughter.

Very useful, it will teach you good techniques to make you a better driver and you get no points. It's a win-win.

If only Chris Huhne had known... :P

MrsG got one of these after her first speeding offence in 40 odd years. The problem was it was in Sussex so annoyingly had to take the 3 points.

Frustratingly it was entering a village on a Sunday morning at 7.30 where the speed limits changed from 50 - 30 - 20 in just a few hundred yards.

What you must also remember is that this course option is only given if you are slightly over the limit.2 or 3 mph otherwise its points and fine.

It is slightly more than 2 or 3 mph and I am in the threshold they give.

I have no points currently, and I know I am biased but I am not a dangerous driver at all. I was a few miles over the speed limit. It was a 50mph road, very spacious and no pedestrians are even allowed on that road I don't think. Can't say "it wont ever happen again" though to be honest...everyone does it all the time. Both the person behind me and in front of me will have been given the same punishment I am sure. It wasn't a camera it was one of those Police check vans which are randomly set up.

You do have to inform your insurance company if you go on one of those courses though. It was on the news a few months back and apparently they want to know now. It also said your premium would probably go up as a result because they treat it the same as points.

Elephant, Admiral, Diamond and any others in that group.

Wow, always assumed you didn't need to to tell them if you just attended the course. Hmmmm, might have to think about this now.

No points and turn up absolutely wankered for the awareness course.

I've attended one. No one told me to inform my insurance.

Don't forget to take your driving license.

I went on the course a couple of years ago. Pretty boring but better than points I guess. Amusing thing was going round the group, nobody took any responsibility; it was always something along the lines of "Oh, I hadn't realised the limit changed".

Only useful thing I learned was that speed cameras generally won't go off unless you are doing more than 1.1 times the limit + 2mph, so in a 40 zone you could in theory go 46 and not get caught. In Leicestershire at least, it varies by county.

I got caught about 4 years ago on Saffron Lane, outside the stadium.........37 in a 30 I think?

I went on a course up near Thurmaston for a few hours. At the time, it was pretty much the same price for the course & no points as it was for fine + points. I'm not sure it did anything to make me a better driver. Spent most of the course listening to people complain about how they didn't deserve to be there.

I did find out where all the red light cameras are (there's only 3!!) & I found out that Leicestershire is one of the softest authorities. You can do the speed limit + 10% + 3mph.......so a 40 speed limit means you can do 40 + 4 + 3 = 47 mph before you can be pinched for speeding. Whereas I would have usually done 40mph in a 40.......I now do closer 46/47mph!!

Dosn't really sound like these courses are having much of an effect. Also not sure why they'd send people on courses who broke the limit by a few mph when surely the danger is from people who were more over the limit?

I think if you are considerably over the limit........like taking the piss over the limit, you don't get the choice. You automatically get the points.

I went on one a few weeks ago, it was a right laugh the lads next to me were so thick/random/weird they made me piss and one of the instructors sat in the corner asleep for 2 hours.
