Guest MattP Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 I still think if you have committed a crime you should be tried for it. I don't think the fact you might die inside or have been convicted of a more serious offence should mean you avoid sentencing for a more minor one.
Jon the Hat Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 I still think if you have committed a crime you should be tried for it. I don't think the fact you might die inside or have been convicted of a more serious offence should mean you avoid sentencing for a more minor one. What if trying that crime meant no funds to try someone else who should be put before a jury? Re the Mp dossier, this has gone way to far in Westminster for there not to be an judge led enquiry. There are obviously people who have come forward to law firms and who will purse their cases, but that should not stop an enquiry.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Is that the actual sentence? If so could serve less than half that I'd imagine, which is nowhere near long enough. I must be honest and say I don't know how much of it he'd serve in normal circumstances or where the term fits in with the sentencing guidelines for the offence. The thing where you only serve half your sentence as a matter of course only applies, I believe, to non violent offenders as a matter of course, but where it's sex offences I've no idea how it works. He's in poor health, which is partly why I was a bit surprised at the length of the term. I still think if you have committed a crime you should be tried for it. I don't think the fact you might die inside or have been convicted of a more serious offence should mean you avoid sentencing for a more minor one. Again I don't know the ins and outs but I'm not sure that even if convicted of the porn thing that it would have made the sentence longer. Where's Lisa when you need her? People will probably disagree with me on this but to me it's one of those cases where the punishment is less about incarceration and more about what it means for the individual. I think it's important that he serves a jail sentence as these are offences that the public should associate with doing time, but frankly, the term is irrelevant. You've got this bloke who's basically lived a life as a much loved celebrity, and not long before the end he's made to face up to what he's done and must know that he's instead going to be remembered long after he's gone as a massive c*nt. Never be able to show his face in public again. In some ways, he'd probably get an easier life in prison - he's not going to be put in with the regular prisoners to get a kicking every day, but put with the other sex offenders who've probably done a lot worse and won't give a toss about what he's done
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 The sentence for the internet thing would run concurrently with his current sentence and wouldn't be anywhere near as long.
Guest MattP Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Fair dos. I assumed it was added onto a sentence rather than run alongside.

I haven't read a huge amount on the story, but the part I read it sounded to me like the pictures were of children who looked young, but I'm not sure they could actually prove the age. I could have missed some other details though. Edit... yeah I missed some stuff, ignore me. Just read it again ha ha.
Guest MattP Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Yeah that's correct just read it on Sky. Some of the things he searched for "my little neices" ****ing pervert

Babylon Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Yeah that's correct just read it on Sky. Some of the things he searched for "my little neices" ****ing pervert Although nothing he searched for is technically illegal. The woman pushing for the prosecution said “It's the crown's position that the girls look underage and the websites, Teeny or whatever, are an indication that he was looking for underage girls." You wouldn't get a conviction on that would you, eighTEEN, and nineTEEN are teens and not illegal. Although his defence was laughable... "they were download by mistake"... Prosecution "errrr you downloaded the same images on numerous occasions". What a prat.
Parafox Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Two Little Boys was the first record ever given to me by my parents one Christmas. This has definitely taken the gloss off that particular year.

Maybe he was just checking to see if it was a mistake, you know like when you keep checking that you actually DID see Suarez bite Chielini

It's completely off topic, but on the theme of stumbling across stuff by 'accident', I've just remembered when my mate's brother came out, his initially uncomprehending mother said she would seek to improve her understanding of homosexuality by 'looking up gays on the internet'. She was swiftly encouraged not to do so
Bellend Sebastian Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Didn't take long: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jul/04/rolf-harris-jail-sentence-review-attorney-general
Parafox Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Didn't take long: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jul/04/rolf-harris-jail-sentence-review-attorney-general I believe that sentencing in historical cases has to carry the same tariff as if it had been tried and convicted at the time the offences took place. In other words the sentences now are what they would have been 30 years ago or whenever.
Babylon Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Didn't take long: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jul/04/rolf-harris-jail-sentence-review-attorney-general Lenient? I'm not sure 6 years to an 84 year old is particularly lenient... if he did the time and wasn't out in a year or two anyway.

That is it though, he will do half if that, but I guess there isn't anything out here for him now... he would probably be better off in prison where he will be isolated

ADK Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 One of my schoolteachers got caught downloading child porn on the school computers. Must say, that's not a very smart thing to do. Got 18 months for that, was 2 years but got reduced. Just did a search and turns out he got caught again, got 2 and a half years and banned from the internet.
Orkneyfox Posted 4 July 2014 Posted 4 July 2014 Just over a year ago, maybe nearer two, I saw Rolf Harris and his band playing live at a folk festival. They were terrific and he did all the old favourites which we all sang along with and applauded him for. Maybe for him that applause never ever happening again will be a significant part of his punishment?
